Within larger hilltop enclosure (CO019-09703-), enclosing top of hill and Caherdrinny Castle (CO019-09702-). Circular area (c. 62.5m N-S; c. 61.8m E-W) enclosed by low collapsing stone wall (int. H 0.25m-1.25m; ext. H 0.5m - 2.55m). Wall is very ruinous N->S with some indications of structures built into it to NE and E; line of large sandstone blocks retains external wall face S->SSW; foundations of overgrown structure against outer wall face to NW. Entrance (Wth 2m) to S. Interior uneven with ruinous remains of radial walls running from inner wall face to castle; low foundations of rectangular building (max. H 0.5m; int. dims. 9.8m E-W, 3.85m N-S; wall Wth 0.9m) just inside wall in NW quadrant. Ruinous remains of radial walls run externally from outer wall face. Windele (Grove White 1905-25, vol. 3, 144), c. 1852 called it a 'Cahir' and noted wall '15 ft thick and 8 ft high' with exterior 'in tolerable condition...interior face much fallen in wherever it retains its perpendicularity.' He examined it for 'those flights of steps or stairs found in the Kerry Cahirs' but found none. Enclosure probably reused as bawn for tower house at centre; some of internal features may be contemporary with tower house. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 4: North Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2000). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009 - CO019-097002: Castle - tower house, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CCO019-097002-. On hilltop, within concentric hilltop enclosures (11975, 11976), with commanding view in all directions except E. Rectangular tower originally of at least 5 storeys (c. 12m E-W; c. 10m N-S), reduced almost to foundation level except NE corner, which stands to 3rd-floor level (Cotter 1994, 112-3). Doorway, at ground-floor level, near S end of W wall, though only part of walling on S side now evident. Ground-floor chamber (c. 6m E-W; c. 5m N-S) had window embrasure in N, E and S walls, of which only fragments survive. Main 1st- and 3rd-floor chambers were covered by vault (both with axis E-W) but only springings in NE corner survive. Part of mural passage evident in E wall at 3rd-floor level. Photograph of 1900 (Grove White 1905-25, vol. 3, opp. 145) shows NE corner standing to 4th-floor level, with sides of window embrasures evident on N and E walls. Large chunks of masonry from tower lie strewn about the site. Since survey of site, upper part of standing portion to NE has fallen (Spring 1998). According to Windele, hilltop enclosure (11975) surrounding tower house probably reused as bawn (Grove White 1905-25, vol. 3, 144); some internal structures likely to be contemporary with tower house. Castle of Condons, granted to Hyde in 17th century (Ó Murchadha 1985, 99, 102). The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 4: North Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2000). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009 - CO019-097003: Hillfort, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CCO019-097003-. In commanding position enclosing hill, on top of which are second inner hilltop enclosure (CO019-09701-) and Caherdrinny Castle (CO019-09702-). Oval area (472m E-W; 350m N-S) enclosed by stone defences in various states of preservation. Rampart of dumped stone construction (int. H 0.3-0.5m; Wth c. 12m) survives SSW->WSW; built on natural scarp (max. H c. 14m) with an external step/terrace c. 0.75m-1m below top of bank; to SW possible ramped entrance (Wth c. 6m) cuts through rampart at angle. WSW->WNW rampart in poor state of preservation. Quarrying to WNW has destroyed rampart and portion of interior. WNW->NNW two banks with stepped profile survive (Inner bank; ext. H 1m, int. H 0.4m; Wth c. 3.6m: outer bank; ext. H 1.3m; int. H 0.4m; Wth c. 3m); banks partially cut into slope and externally faced with large stones. Causewayed entrance through banks (Wth 2m ) to N of quarry; flanked to either side by external fosse (D 0.5m; Wth c. 1.4m) with counterscarp bank. NNW->NNE single bank of dumped stone construction (int. H c. 0.3m; ext. H c. 4m; Wth c. 10m); stepped profile noticeable in places; possible entrance (Wth 1m) to N. Rampart in poor condition NNE->ENE (ext. H 0.8m; int. H 0.2m); modern field fence follows line of rampart in some places. To ENE some remains of double bank visible (inner bank: ext. H 0.5m; Wth 1.7m; outer bank: ext. H 1.5m; int. H 0.55m; Wth 4.5m). At E side rampart has been modified (possibly by occupiers of castle); now steep-sided and faced with stone; a radial field fence, running E from inner enclosure (CO019-09702-), turns S to join line of modified rampart. Rampart removed E->S; modern field fence follows approximate line of removed rampart. Scarp runs concentric to rampart, c. 27m to outside; topped by field fence NE->E and SE->NNE. Interior slopes up to castle and inner enclosure; overgrown with gorse and hawthorn on W side, fern and bracken on N, E and S sides clear. Curving bank of radial field system c. 15-30m outside inner enclosure is of similar construction to stepped rampart of outer enclosure and may be contemporary with it (pers. comm. B. Masterson). Windele (Grove-White 1905-25, vol. 3, 144) noted c. 1852 'a great stone wall...of considerable thickness' encircling the hill 'about 400 paces' lower than the inner defence (CO019-09701-). In pasture, on gentle N-facing slope to N of Caherdrinny Hill. Circular area (28m E-W; 27.5m N-S) enclosed by earth and stone bank (max. int. H 1.4m); external fosse (D 1m) SE->NW. Break (Wth 9m) in bank to NE. Stumps of trees remain on bank. Interior given saucer-shaped profile due to gentle slope of inner face of bank; upright sandstone block (H 0.7m) noted at foot of bank to SE.
