In rough grazing on lower E slopes of Knocknagallaun. D-shaped area (87m NE-SW; 33m NW-SE) defined by low earthen bank (H 0.7m) NNE->SE; stream SE->SW; field fence running SW-NNE. Lazybeds cross interior on N-S axis. Known locally as "Ríoch na cathar". The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 1: West Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1992). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. In rough hill pasture, on a break on the S bank of a river, on a steep E-facing slope overlooking Coulagh Bay. A circular area (8.5m E-W; 8m N-S) is defined by the remains of a stone wall (Wth 1.2m; H 0.45m) protruding from traces of an intermittent low earthen bank (H 0.1m). Upright contiguous slabs form the exterior of the wall along the SW-NW arc and there are traces of horizontally laid stones along the internal face. No wall survives NW-NE, where the river has eroded part of the N quadrant of the site. From NE-SW an earthen scarp (max. H 1.1m) displays stones laid horizontally along its external face. This compensates for the slope and gives an almost level interior. Stone slabs, which probably came from the enclosing element, are scattered on the down-slope to the E. Some large stones are scattered haphazardly in the interior and there is a hut site (CO114-067003-) in the W half. A souterrain (CO114-067002-) is exposed in the eroded bank at N and extends to the S. The above description is derived from 'The Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 5' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2009). Date of upload: 22 December 2009 - CO114-067002: Souterrain, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CCO114-067002-. In an enclosure (CO114-067001-). The bank of the enclosure is being eroded at N by a river and traces of the rounded roof (Wth c. 1.3m) of an earth-cut chamber are visible 1m below ground level. The chamber is largely filled with clay but two small openings (H 0.25m), which extend underground to the S for c. 1.5m, are visible. Roughly 3m to the S, in the interior of the enclosure, a hole (diam. 0.2m) in the bottom of a depression is further evidence of a collapsed chamber. The above description is derived from 'The Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 5' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2009). Date of upload: 22 December 2009 - CO114-067003: Hut site, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CCO114-067003-. Within the W half of an enclosure (CO114-067001-). The poorly preserved remains of a rectangular hut site (4.1m N-S; 3.2m E-W) defined by a bank (Wth 0.9m; H 0.3m) of earth and stone at the N and E. At S a broken line of large stones defines the hut site and a break in this line may indicate the entrance location. The enclosure wall forms the W side of the hut site. A large stone lies in the interior. The above description is derived from 'The Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 5' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2009). In rough hill pasture, on bog, on a N-facing slope overlooking Coulagh Bay. A network of relict stone field boundaries (T 0.6m; max. H 0.55m) protrude intermittently above the surface of the bog in a roughly rectangular area (c. 100m N-S; c. 60m E-W). The relict walls comprise upright stones that are set mainly at right angles to the line of the walls. There is a hut site (CO114-068002-) within the field boundary network. The above description is derived from 'The Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 5' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2009). Date of upload: 22 December 2009 - CO114-068002: Hut site, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CCO114-068002-. In rough hill pasture, within a network of relict field boundaries (CO114-068001-), on a break on a N-facing slope overlooking Coulagh Bay. The remains of a circular hut site (4.5m N-S; 4.4m E-W) defined by a circuit of stones (max. T 0.6m; max. H 0.55m) along the perimeter, which protrude above the surface of the bog. Similar remains of a crescent-shaped annexe (2.5m E-W; 2m N-S) abut the hut site externally at S. A wall of the field boundary network (CO114-068001-) extends to the N from the hut site. The above description is derived from 'The Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 5' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2009). In rough hill pasture on bog, on a N-facing slope overlooking Coulagh Bay. According to local information, this natural earth-fast boulder (2.6m NW-SE; 2.2m NE-SW; H 0.8m), which is roughly rectangular in plan, was used as a mass-rock. The SE half of the boulder slopes gently downwards to the relatively flat surface of the NW half. The above description is derived from 'The Archaeological Inventory of County Cork.
