On a grass-covered hillock, in an area of generally rough peaty grazing with clear views of the surrounding hills and mountains. A roughly circular area (diam. 18m) is enclosed by the low intermittent remains of an earthen bank (Wth 1.4m; H 0.2m) from which stones protrude intermittently along the N arc. The disturbed uneven interior is in pasture. Externally the ground slopes down on all sides. The removal of gravel and other works have truncated the SE-SW sector. In the interior of a rath (CO103-022----). According to local information, an opening in the ground led to an underground passage. The opening was closed for safety reasons and the ground has been levelled off. There are no visible remains of this possible souterrain. In rough pasture, on bog on the lower S-facing slopes of Canshanavoe Mountain overlooking the valley of Adrigole River to the S. In the course of turf-cutting over several years, preserved pieces of cut wooden planks were encountered on the face of the cut bog (D c. 0.5-0.7m below the surface). These may be the remains of a togher running through the bog (present depth 1-1.8m deep). One piece of wood (L 1.1m; Wth 0.15m; T 0.07m) was identified as oak (Archaeology Dept., UCC). In rough pasture, on cutaway bog, c. 35m to the E of a togher (CO103-024001-), on the lower S-facing slopes of Canshanavoe Mountain and overlooking the valley of the Adrigole River to S. Turf-cutting has exposed the remains of a relict stone field boundary (T 0.7m; H 0.3m; L c. 40m N-S) which is set on the underlying mineral soil. Many stones are set at right angles to the line of the pre-bog field boundary and are largely obscured by heather and gorse. In rough rocky hill pasture, on the steep N-facing slopes of a river valley. Three separate adits (Wth 2.4m; H 1.2m; L c. 5m, Wth 3m; H 1.1m; L c. 4m and Wth 2.5m; H 2m; L c. 5m) are visible at the base of the N face of a cliff, separated by two pillars of rock. The adits, which are filled with water and debris and slope down to the S, have dome-shaped roofs and traces of fire-setting and occasional green staining of copper mineralisation. Immediately to the N of the adits is a large, mainly sod-covered, irregularly shaped mound (14m E-W; 10m N-S; H 2.4m). The N side of the mound is eroding and spilling down the steep slope as far as the river-bed. Here a variety of heat-shattered stones, damaged stone mauls and nodules of charcoal are visible, intermixed with black charcoal-enriched soil. This mine has been radiocarbon dated to 3230 30BP (O'Brien 2003, Table 1). There is another copper mine (CO103-025001-) c. 45m to the N. In rough rocky hill pasture, on the steep N-facing slopes of a river valley. An adit (Wth 4m; H 1.5m; L c. 4m), filled with water and debris and sloping down to the S, is visible on the N face of an area of outcropping rock. It has a dome-shaped roof and some traces of fire-setting. Immediately to the N is a small, mainly sod-covered, irregularly shaped mound (4m E-W; 2m N-S; H 0.4m) from which a variety of heat-shattered stones and damaged stone mauls are spilling down the steep slope. A small opening blocked by debris is located 2m to the E. This may represent the entrance to another adit. There is another copper mine (CO103-025----) c. 45m to the S. In rough gorse-covered pasture, on the foot of a S-facing rocky mountain slope overlooking the mouth of Glenlough valley. A circular area (10m E-W; 9.4m N-S) is defined by the intermittent remains of a low bank (Wth 1m; H 0.15m) E-W and by an eroded earthen bank cut into the upslope (H 0.7m) W-E. The level interior is raised (H 1m) along the S arc where it is revetted by stone slabs. The entire site is obscured by gorse and ferns. A horseshoe-shaped gorse-covered mound (13m N-S; 9.1m E-W; H 1.3m) of heat-shattered stones and charcoal-enriched soil. The opening (Wth 2.5m) faces W towards the river. Sheep paths truncate the mound at NE and SE and the river is eroding the extremities of both arms of the mound. There is a hut site (CO103-027004-) c. 65m to the W.
