Ruin of parish church of Carrigdownane (14402) in centre. In use; burials, mostly marked by low uninscribed gravemarkers, to S of and within church. In centre of graveyard (14552). Rectangular church (int. 18.1m E-W; int. 6.36m N-S), heavily ivy-grown. Walls stand to full height except top of E gable and top of E end of N wall. Doorway in centre of S wall: lintelled embrasure; limestone door surround has chamfered edge and pointed arch. Doorway opposite in N wall: surround collapsed but described by Windele (Grove White 1905-25, vol. 2, 52) as having a flat arch. East gable much collapsed and overgrown; lintelled wall presses at N and S ends; wide gap in centre (Wth 2.3m) held window, which was described by Windele (ibid.) as a 'lancet with a broad splay'. South wall has wall press at E end; window nearby has ogee-headed light and splayed and lintelled embrasure. North wall has light opposite, only W side of which survives, but probably similar to latter. Two corbels at W end of N and S walls, and deep beam holes at N and S ends of W gable, indicate former loft at W end. Below line of loft are two small splayed and lintelled embrasures, with narrow slits, now blocked; probably pair of gun loops. Above line of gallery is blocked central window in W wall, obscured by overgrowth; described by Power (1932, 62) as 'a double window of pointed style, splaying widely inwards'. Parish church of Carrigdownane; surviving structure late medieval in appearance. Reported 'in ruins', in 1615, abandoned by 1641 (Brady 1863, vol. 2, 85). Solid construction (H c. 8m) of random-rubble limestone, atop slight plinth. Square base (2.3m x 2.3m) rises to c. 3.5m, then tapers gradually with height; divided into three tiers by string courses; surmounted by octagonal pinnacle (see photograph in Grove White 1905-25, vol. 4, opp. 226). Stannard's Grove, c. 150m to N, indicated on 1842 OS 6-inch map, though date plaque on house states built in 1904 by William Stackpoole; rebuilt 1924 after being blown up in 1921. On cliff-edge promontory overlooking Funshion River. Polygonal area (c. 30m E-W; c. 20m N-S) enclosed by limestone rubble wall, much ruined and ivy-clad, built along cliff edge on N and E sides. Interior largely filled with overgrown dumps of rubble; traces of structures, possibly towers, at NW angle and on S side. Southern structure consists of SW wall (L c. 9m; max. H c. 4m; T 1.8m) with external base batter, with return of SE wall (L c. 4.4m); facing stones entirely missing from S corner, SE wall and internal face of walls; SW wall pierced by splayed gun loop; stretch of SW enclosure wall (H 1m; T 0.9m) with external base batter continues line of SW wall of structure for c. 7m to NW, continuing on same line but rebuilt for further 3m (max. H 2m; T 0.65m); wall on W side of enclosure then continues to NE (L c. 13m) to NW structure. Structure at NW angle consists of short return (L c. 1m) of W wall (junction with W side of enclosure obscured by ivy), N wall with base batter built on cliff edge c. 2m below level of site, and short return of E wall (L c. 4m). Survives only to interior ground level for much of its length, but W end stands to c. 3m above ground level. Near W end, c. 1m below interior ground level, garderobe chute exits over cliff; above interior ground level near W end, traces of two opes, possibly gun loops, survive. At S end of return of E wall, low remains of enclosure walls continue along cliff edge along remainder of N, E and SE sides; short broken return links up with SE wall of S structure. Milo fitzPhilip de la Roche pardoned in 1317 for 'the burning of the Condon manor of Carrickdownane' (MacCotter and Nicholls 1996, 238); Carrigdownane subsequently acquired by Roches during 14th century (Nicholls 1993, 186).
