Causewayed entrance (Wth 6m) through bank to NNE; linear avenue (Wth c. 6m) extends from entrance to NE for 28m, flanked on both sides by earthen bank (max. H 1.4m). Fosse mainly broad and shallow, except to W where it becomes narrow and deep (D 1m). Enclosure disturbed at SSW side where bank no longer survives and fosse protrudes into interior; hachured plan of enclosure on 1935 OS 6-inch map and by Lee (ibid., 25) shows no interruption of enclosing bank and fosse here. Interior slopes down gently to NE. Enclosure heavily overgrown with coniferous and deciduous trees. Recorded by Lee (1932, 26) as 'a particularly fine rath...in fairly good state of preservation'. Overgrown, open rectangular well, recessed into slope; dry stone walling (H 1m) on three sides, access on fourth side (E) with some paving. Well filled by stream from W. No evidence of holy use. Possibly the 'Tobar Breauka' referred to by Windele (1897, 379) 'whose waters are good for headaches and sore eyes'. Called 'St Bernard's Well' in 1838 OS Field Book which also noted 'a patron held at well for many years, but not at the present time' (Grove White 1905-25, vol. 1, 229). In 1906, Grove White (ibid.) visited well and was told people came on Easter Sundays and that water cured 'all diseases'. Recorded by Lee (1932, 24-5) as having 'originally stood on the west side of the bothairín about 50 yards north of Tobar a' Chaipín where Holy Mass was celebrated in Penal Days. There is a tradition locally that when the stone was removed bells used to be tolled at the old site every night. It is rather significant that the large wood immediately east of this is known as the Priest's Wood'. Roche (1988, 25-6) also noted that stone was moved though he gives the original location as in the 'Priest's Wood'. Detached L-plan two-storey house and public house, built c. 1930, with four-bay elevations to north and east sides, lean-to addition to south side and recent mansard-roofed addition to west. Full-height box bays flanking entrance in east elevation, chamfered recessed north-east corner, recent two-storey addition to rear prolonging north elevation, and single-storey flat roofed additions to rear. Hipped artificial slate roof with rendered chimneystacks having moulded caps and cast-iron rainwater goods. Smooth rendered walls with string course to north elevation and corner bay, moulded render panels over entrances to east elevation, that over main entrance being pedimented, and moulded roundel to pediment over chamfered corner bay. Square-headed window openings having one-over-one pane single and double timber sliding sash windows to north elevation and southmost bay of east elevation, one with stained glass, and replacement timber casement windows to rest of east elevation, having stained-glass toplights. Four-over-four pane timber sliding sash windows to rear. Round-headed door opening to main entrance, set into slight projection having moulded cornice, double-leaf timber panelled door and fanlight. Round-headed door opening to chamfered corner, with moulded render cornice supported on consoles and having timber panelled door, fanlight and steps.
