In tillage, on gentle E-facing slope. Recorded by Bowman (1934, 36) as double-ramparted fort in P. Brown's (diam. 41yd), outer rampart levelled; inner rampart c. 8ft H. In centre of levelled ringfort (CO024-10601-). Discovered in 1962 during levelling of fort when roof of chamber was penetrated. Excavated in 1972 prior to backfilling (Twohig 1976, 19-23); access gained through opening made in 1962. Single, roughly rectangular stone-built chamber (L 3.6m; Wth 1.5m; H 1.4m; long axis E-W); walls corbelled; roofed with lintels. Ventilation shaft (L 1.9m; Wth 0.3m; H 0.2m) sloped up from NW corner of chamber, at roof level, to surface; stone-lined and roofed with flat stones. Creepway (L 1m; Wth 0.5m; H 0.4m) from E end of chamber to entrance shaft; stone-faced; roofed with two lintels. Rectangular entrance shaft (L 2m; Wth 0.5m; long axis NW-SE); floor 2.2m below ground level; lower 1.1m of walls stone-built; upper parts earth-cut; unroofed. Excavation showed that souterrain was constructed as free-standing structure within rectangular pit (L 6.5m; Wth 2.5m; D 2.5m). Space between souterrain and sides of pit was later backfilled. Fill from excavation of entrance shaft produced large quantity of animal bones and charcoal. Excavator suggested that souterrain became disused and was infilled while ringfort was still occupied though exact relationship between souterrain and ringfort could not be determined without further excavation. Shallow trench (Wth 0.2m; D 0.3m) overlying fill of entrance shaft was excavated for a distance of 2m. Excavator suggested that this may be foundation trench of house. No visible surface trace. Ring-ditches (CO024-225---; CO024-226---) and circular enclosure (CO024-10603-) all within field system. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. In N half of graveyard (14559). Vacant former C of I parish church of Castlemagner. Church, of random-rubble limestone construction, consists of rectangular nave (long-axis 12.2m E-W), with lean-to vestry along N wall, chancel at E end, and embattled three storey tower (3.7m N-S; 2.5m E-W) at W end. Nave lit by three pointed window opes, with Y-tracery, in S wall; chancel has grouping of three lancet windows in end wall. Tower has pointed door ope with hood moulding, in S-wall. Interior retains some of its fittings, including pulpit, pews, memorial plaques; simple wooden king-post roof. Church built in 1816, capable of accommodating 120 people, on site of earlier church (14405) (Brady 1863, vol. 2, 102); low overgrown walls at SE corner of nave may be remains of earlier church. Church repaired in 1873, and in 1887 vestry added with new heating apparatus, further improvements made in 1900-3 included a new roof and addition of chancel (Cole 1903, 173; Grove-White 1905-25, vol. 2, 117). Rectory 100m to W: 2-storey over basement; front elevation (SE) of 4-bays; hipped roof; built in 1813 (Grove White, ibid.). In graveyard (14559). Abutting SE corner of nave of C of I church (14709) is low overgrown corner of earlier structure (1m E-W; 2.5m E-W; H c. 3m). Bowman (1934, 36-7) described now missing portion of E wall as 'c. 12ft high by 7ft wide and 2 feet 2 in thickness'. Remains of parish church of Castlemagner. Described in 1693 as 'much damnified by the late wars, but now in repairing' (Brady 1863, vol. 2, 101). A church here listed in Papal Taxation of 1291 (ibid., 100). On W side of Ketragh River glen. Fragmentary remains of rectangular bawn (c. 42m N-S; c. 38m E-W) and much-ruined central tower. Bawn and area immediately to W occupied by farmyard; 2-storey residential farm-house, immediately NE of tower, now abandoned. Only SE corner of tower now stands to full height, otherwise largely reduced to overgrown pile of rubble. Externally corner takes form of D-shaped extension to S end of E wall of tower; internally this space is circular (diam. 2.15m) and once contained spiral wooden stairs which gave access to all four main floors of tower via doors with stone surrounds: lintelled at ground- and 3rd-floor levels; with pointed arch at 1st-and 2nd-floor levels. On top of a outside of wall is continuous machicolation carried on ten corbels. Short section of south wall of main block survives (L 2.2m); it breaks off at line of window embrasures; this wall stands to full height and is capped by shallow cornice. East wall much more broken down but runs 4.1m to NE corner where short return (L 2.2m) of N wall survives. Early photograph (Grove White 1905-25, vol. 2, opp. 108) shows more of N wall standing, including lower part of NW corner, and broken vault over main ground-floor chamber. Nineteenth-century pamphlet described the castle as '56 feet high, flanked with one round tower, with a battery' (ibid., 118). Best preserved section of bawn wall is N side, running c. 20m from NE corner. This contains some plain blocked-up window lights and one rectangular light with mullion and hood moulding. Eastern-most section of this wall, and adjacent length of E wall, formed side and end walls of 2-storey 18th-century house; this house superseded by 2-storey gable-ended farm building which incorporates N end of former house. South section of E bawn wall and E section of S bawn wall largely reduced to foundation level. Low section of bawn wall (H c. 3m) in SW corner formed end (S) and side (W) walls of 1-storey farm building which is now otherwise removed; only intact feature appears to be much-ruined window embrasure in W section of wall. Another 1-storey farm building in NW corner of bawn may incorporate part of bawn wall in its side (W) and end (N) walls but no original features noted; on E side of latter wall is short low rough section of walling which is separated from first-mentioned section of bawn by gap which forms present entrance into farmyard. Castle of the Magner family, followers and tenants of the Barrys (MacCotter and Nicholls 1996, 211); forfeited in mid-17th century and granted to Brettridge (Grove White 1905-25, 2, 120). On N bank of Ketragh River. Small ruined rectangular 2-storey mill (int.: 5.7m N-S; 4.45m E-W) built of random-rubble limestone. North end overgrown; low gable on S wall. Shallow wheel-pit (Wth 1.5m; D 0.8m) alongside S elevation probably housed undershot waterwheel. Overgrown remains of addition at S end of W wall. Shallow wet earth-cut channel which encloses structure on W, N and E sides is possibly remains of millrace associated with a structures to N which does not survive. Bowman (1934, 38) recorded ruins of grinding and tuck mills here which had not been used since The Famine. Down Survey (1655-6) barony map shows a mill here, and a 'Tuck Mill' a short distance to W. The 1842 OS 6-inch map shows present structure and two larger structures (long axes N-S) to N, and names complex 'Castlemagner Mill'. Larger structures not shown on 1905 OS 6-inch map.
