On S side of roadway, close to W bank of River Lee; roughly D-shaped graveyard (48m E-W; 42m N-S; see plan, Henchion 1967, 102) enclosed by stone wall. N of centre is ruin of C of I parish church of Aghinagh (CO071-102002-), on or near site of earlier parish church. In occasional use; memorial inscriptions recorded by Henchion (1967, 103-15), earliest inscribed headstone dated 1773, some chest tombs, also many low uninscribed gravemarkers. Rounds made at grave of Rev. John Callaghan, located to S of church; also rounds made at another grave to W said locally to be burial place of Bishop MacEgan (Hartnett 1939, 95; Hartnett 1947, 9-10; Henchion ibid., 118-9). Just N of centre in graveyard (CO071-102001-), ruin of C of I parish church of Aghinagh. Church consists of rectangular nave (int.: 12.35m E-W; 6.3m N-S; see plan Henchion 1967, 102) with 3-storey tower (3.25m E-W; 4m N-S) at W end, and shallow rectangular chancel (int.: 2.45m E-W; 3.65m N-S) added to E end. Entered through door with pointed arch in S wall of tower; also narrow door in internal N wall of tower which leads, via narrow stone stairs, to gallery at W end of nave, and to 1st floor of tower. Nave lit by series of three windows, with stone switchline tracery, in S wall; more elaborate stone tracery in E window of chancel. Ground floor of tower covered by double barrel vault; each floor marked externally by string course; shallow quatrefoil niches on 1st floor; battlements entirely fallen. In W wall of tower, at ground floor level, pointed window with moulded hood; directly above window, and re-set into wall face, is very worn stone head, wearing what appears to be mitre (H c. 30cms; Wth c.15cms). East half of church now overgrown; chancel contains 19th century burial plot. Built on site of earlier parish church which fell into ruins between 1615 and 1774 (Brady 1863, vol. 2, 18-9). Nave and tower built in 1792 (ibid., 20); chancel added in 1854 when church also re-roofed (ibid., 21; Cole 1903, 151); 'dismantled' in 1889 and a ruin ever since (ibid.). Square-headed window openings with limestone sills, render label mouldings and bipartite pointed arch casement windows. Square-headed door opening with render label moulding and timber panelled door. Freestanding Board of First Fruits style Church of Ireland church, built 1792, comprising three-bay double-height nave having three-stage bell tower to front (west), single-bay single-storey chancel to rear (east), added 1854. Pitched gables to nave and chancel with roof now missing, carved limestone corbels to eaves course level. Rubble stone walls having roughly dressed quoins, carved limestone string courses and carved stone head to tower. Pointed arch window openings having cut limestone surrounds and sills, Y-tracery to nave and intersecting tracery to chancel openings. Blind quatrefoil openings to first-stage of tower. Pointed arch door opening to front elevation of tower having tooled limestone surround, voussoirs and carved hood moulding. Pointed arch door opening to side (south) elevation of tower having tooled limestone surround and voussoirs. Located within own grounds including graveyard with various grave markers, tombs and memorials. Bounded by rubble limestone walls with square-profile gate piers having carved caps and double-leaf cast-iron gates.
