In marshy ground, immediately E of stream. Excavated in 1985 (Hurley 1987, 95-105). Prior to excavation, site consisted of horseshoe-shaped mound of burnt material (8.2m N-S; 5.6m E-W; H c. 0.5m); central depression (L 2.6m; Wth 2m; D 0.3m), opening to W; part of wooden trough exposed on W side. Excavation revealed wooden trough (L 1.8m; Wth 0.6m), the greater part of which was hollowed from a single oak trunk. Groove at E end to accommodate plank; small perforation at base of groove possibly to contain peg. Hearth to NE of trough consisted of shallow depression filled with black soil, ash and charcoal. Spread of black soil and charcoal extended from the hearth to the eastern lip of the trough. Beneath this spread, 11 stake-holes were revealed, possibly evidence of roasting spit, according to excavator. Wood from trough and charcoal from hearth were radiocarbon dated to 3490± 35BP and 3370± 35BP (GrN-13877; GrN-13878) respectively. Second fulacht fiadh (11214) c. 60m to SSW; third (10483) c. 35m to S; fourth (10484) c. 55m to S and fifth (10485) c. 20m to SE. Rectangular area, on W side of Sherkin Island, partially projecting into sea to W, defined by tumble of large rocks (many up to 2 metres in length) to S and E and by shore to N and W. Stones to S follow line of shallow creek, Westropp (1914, 95) saw stones as remains of 'overthrown wall about 8ft to 10ft thick'. Interior area flat and rocky; overlooked by ridge immediately to S. Situated on a terrace at the head of a narrow inlet, immediately E of Carrigdoona promontory fort (CO153-001001-) and close to Sherkin Point. It consists of a chamber (L 2.6m, Wth 1.1m) open to SW which is represented by one sidestone to N, two sidestones to S with an inset backstone to E. A low transverse stone set outside the W end of the S sidestone may represent some form of entrance feature, or part of a facade. Slight traces of a possible mound are visible to the N of the chamber. This monument was severely damaged during the winter storms of 2013-14 and has been enveloped by the rock pool which, when surveyed in 1988, was then just a small hole at the NW end of the chamber (see attached plan, CO153-001003-_01.pdf). In rough pasture, covered with a scatter of water-rolled stones, at the head of a NE-SW inlet on the SW side of Sherkin Island. There is a reed-covered marshy area to the NW. A circular slightly raised area (diam. 7.5m) defined by an enclosing element (T 0.5m; H 0.15m) formed by intermittently placed large stones, which protrude from the ground. The jumbled remains of an oval hut site (3.6m NE-SW; 1.5m NW-SE) defined by a damaged bank (Wth 0.5m; H 0.4m) of earth and stone. The enclosing element has largely collapsed into the interior. Located close to the western tip of Sherkin Island, to the south of enclosure (CO153-037----) and c. 20m from the rocky shoreline. A rectangular enclosure (c. 10m E-W x 5m N-S), open on the eastern side. It has been constructed by incorporating two low rock outcrops to north and south, in an area of exposed rock and rough grazing. There are views over the sound towards Cape Clear. The surviving walls are low and partially protrude from the peat cover, with evidence for later rebuilding in some sections. The northwest corner is marked by a single stone, set upright, measuring c.0.8m in height.
