Oval-shaped area, once an island but now connected to mainland by narrow isthmus; entire area occupied by oil refinery. No visible surface trace of two structures marked on OS 6-inch map and shown in photo (Coleman 1915, opp. 180) in grounds of Corkbeg House. Oil painting in board room of refinery (probably late 18th century) shows tall structure of tower house appearance with lower wider building immediately to W; within walled garden of house to SE a small circular structure with conical roof is shown which could have been corner tower of bawn enclosure though more likely to be dovecote or associated with house. According to Healy (1988, 126) 'in 1915 the old castle collapsed on one side, showing the interior stone arch' (vault). Castle of De Caunton or Condon family, built in 1396 according to Windele (Coleman 1915, 169) though tower house probably later. On S shore of Corkbeg Island. One of two shell middens (CO088-106---) exposed by recent sea erosion. Layer of shells (H 0.4m; L c. 2 - 3m) visible in profile on low cliff-edge c. 0.4m below present ground level. According to local information, other shell middens have been exposed on the island from time to time. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 2: East and South Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1994). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009 - CO088-123: Fulacht fia, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CCO088-123----. At the interface between a low-lying marshy area and pasture, at the break of slope of a N-facing ridge. A shallow irregular spread (12.5m E-W; 10m N-S; D 0.02-0.03m) of heat-shattered stones and charcoal-enriched soil was discovered in 2007 during archaeological testing in advance of the construction of a gas-fired electricity generating station at Whitegate oil refinery (Purcell 2007). Excavation revealed that the burnt material covered a small hearth and a rectangular unlined trough cut into outcropping shale and sandstone bedrock. The trough was filled with burnt material. A stone-lined pit, which produced evidence of in situ burning, truncated the SW quadrant of the spread and was located 0.6m NW of the hearth. Excavation also revealed that the fulacht fia was disturbed by land drainage works and was cut by a possible corn-drying kiln (CO088-125----). (pers. comm. Tony Cummins) The above description is derived from 'The Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 5' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2009). Date of upload: 22 December 2009 - CO088-124: Fulacht fia, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CCO088-124----. In a low-lying marshy area that had been disturbed by modern land drainage works. A shallow irregular spread (7.2m N-S; 5.3m E-W; D 0.01-0.02m) of heat-shattered stones and charcoal-enriched soil was discovered in 2007 during archaeological testing in advance of the construction of a gas-fired electricity generating station at Whitegate oil refinery. Excavation revealed three pits cut into the subsoil. One of these, which was rectangular in shape and located at the N end of the spread, was interpreted as a trough. The other two pits, which were found to the W of the spread, contained inclusions of both burnt and unburnt stones and were interpreted as the remains of troughs or of storage pits. Another fulacht fia (CO088-123----) c. 16m to the SE was also excavated. (pers. comm. Tony Cummins) The above description is derived from 'The Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 5' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2009). Date of upload: 22 December 2009 - CO088-125: Kiln - corn-drying, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CCO088-125----. In marshy low-lying ground at the base of an E-W ridge. This feature was excavated in 2007 prior to the construction of a gas-fired electricity generating station in the SW corner of the Whitegate Oil Refinery facility. The feature comprised an L-shaped cut (max. Wth 1.6m; max. D 0.18m) which was interpreted as the remains of a possible corn-drying kiln. It truncated the SE quadrant of a fulacht fia (CO088-123----) from where it extended (L 3.8m) to the E and then turned to the N for a further 4.5m, terminating in the NE quadrant of the fulacht fia. The feature extended through the burnt spread material and down into the subsoil layer in all areas apart from the N terminal where the burnt spread had formed the base. The kiln flue (Wth c. 0.6m) consisted of a flat base, rounded corners and vertical sides that were stone lined. The flue tapered to 0.3m in width at the N terminal where the probable stoke-hole area was identified. A possible 'baffle stone' stood upright across the bend of the flue. The absence of roofing lintels suggested that the kiln had been unroofed when it was backfilled. A saddle quern fragment was recovered from the fill. According to the excavator (Cummins 2008, 9), the siting of the kiln may have been a deliberate attempt to take advantage of the dry, compact ground provided by the fulacht fia spread in an otherwise marshy area. A stone arc, situated immediately to the NW, ran roughly concentric to the sides of the possible kiln and, according to Cummins (ibid., 6), may have been the remains of an earlier kiln structure. Radiocarbon dates for this kiln are currently unavailable. (Cummins 2008) The above description is derived from 'The Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 5' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2009).
