In mountain bogland, on NE-facing slope. Circular area (20.3m N-S; 19.5m E-W) defined by earth and stone bank (int. H 0.3m; ext. H 0.5m), overgrown with gorse. External fosse cuts into rock outcrop to SW and SE (max. D 1.45m); shallower elsewhere. Second bank (H 0.4m) WSW->E; rock outcrop E->WSW. Entrance (Wth 2m) to ESE; stone-faced on S side. Interior slopes down gently to NE; drier than surrounding land. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. On rough mountain land, on spur of hill, overlooking Owengarve River valley to S. Probable row of three stones, aligned approximately E-W, 6.3m in overall length. E stone is 0.7m L, 0.6m T and 1.8m H. Next stone, 1.2m to SW, leans markedly to N and may be partly displaced; it measures 0.6m L, 0.2m T and, if erect, c. 1.5m H. In pasture, on S-facing slope. Circular area (22m N-S; 24m E-W) enclosed by stone wall (H 1.4m; T 2m); collapsed externally NE->SW and NW->N; entrance (Wth 2m) to SE. Rectangular chamber (1.7m x 1.05m; H 0.9m) within wall to E; access through lintelled ope (H 0.4m; Wth 0.4m) on inner wall face. In cut-away bog on edge of shoulder high up on S-facing slope of Knockacommeen in Derrynasaggart Mountains. Comprises ruined gallery (L 2.8m; Wth c. 1m) aligned NE-SW, represented by large sidestones to N and S overlapped to W by two lower slabs, inset backstone at E end, and sill-like stone at W end. Single buttress-stone outside gallery to S. Sidestones decrease in height from W to E. Two upright slabs beyond and flanking W end of gallery may be outer-wall stones. Displaced roofstone lies at SE end of gallery. Monument clearly once covered by bog. Within a dense coniferous forest planted in the 1970s, on the upper SW-facing slopes of Knockacommeen. According to local information, when peat was cut in this general area in the 1960s a chamber was exposed consisting of a large roofstone resting on upright slabs. The structure collapsed in the late 1960s when the sidestones shifted inwards. A series of large displaced stones are visible at the site, including the possible roofstone (2.2m x 2m); these are largely concealed beneath forest clearance and debris. The description of the monument is indicative of a megalithic tomb, and given that two other wedge tombs occur on the mountain (CO058-060---- and especially CO058-076----, c. 500m and c. 1.1km, respectively to the ENE), this might be considered another example of this class. Remains of this tomb were exposed in the course of peat cutting on the upper S slopes of Knockacommeen Mountain. The S and E sides of the roofstone (2.5m x 1.6m; T 0.17m) and part of the S side are exposed in the cutaway bog face. It consists of a chamber (L 1.95; Wth 0.9m at W, narrowing slightly to 0.84m at E), aligned E-W. Both the N and S sides are formed by two slabs and the E end is closed by a backstone (H 0.30m). The roofstone rests on the sidestones, backstone and on a pad-stone on top of the W end of the S side. A possible outer-wall stone is exposed immediately S of the chamber, slightly set back from the W end. A second wedge tomb (CO058-060----) stands c. 700m to the WSW and the remains of a possible third (CO058-075----) are within the forest c. 1.1km to the WSW.
