Funnel-shaped opening of earth and stone set into natural scarp, now partially collapsed. Visited in living memory, now disused. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 1: West Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1992). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. In pasture, on a NW-facing slope. A large spread of heat-shattered stones and charcoal-enriched soil was discovered during topsoil stripping in advance of the construction of the Ballincollig-Ballineen gas pipeline in 2000. The spread appears to have been dragged over the area by ploughing. A test-trench (Wth 1.2m; L 25m E-W) which was excavated across the spread showed it to be barely 0.05m in depth. The spread was limited to two patches along the length of the trench. A subcircular area (diam. 1.81m; D 0.4m) of heat-shattered stones and charcoal-enriched soil was also noted to the W of the test-trench. The excavator concluded, based on local information, that the main concentration of heat-shattered stones and charcoal-enriched soil lies to the N of the pipeline corridor, outside the excavated area. (Tobin 2001; 2002g, 47) The above description is derived from 'The Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 5' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2009). Date of upload: 22 December 2009 - CO109-094: Fulacht fia, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CCO109-094----. In pasture, on a SE-facing slope. A slightly horseshoe-shaped spread (10.2m E-W; 6.05m N-S) of heat-shattered stones and charcoal-enriched soil was discovered during topsoil stripping in advance of the construction of the Ballincollig-Ballineen gas pipeline and excavated in 2000. The perimeter of the spread was emphasised by a layer of ash which extended from under it. A central subrectangular trough (2.17m x 1.73m; D 0.5m) in the centre of the spread had been cut through the burnt material into the subsoil. It was filled with grey silt, had a basal layer of charcoal and showed some evidence of stone lining on its S side. A second possible subcircular trough (2.04m E-W; 1.54m N-S; D 0.91m), filled with silt and with a deposit of iron pan at its base, was found on the SW extremity of the spread. A possible burnt mound (CO109-100----) lies 1.7m to the W. (Tobin 2001; 2002h, 47-8) The above description is derived from 'The Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 5' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2009). Date of upload: 22 December 2009 - CO109-100: Burnt mound, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CCO109-100----. In pasture, on a SE-facing slope. An irregularly shaped spread (min. dims. 2.83m E-W; 2.32m N-S; D 0.44m) of heat-shattered stones and charcoal-enriched soil was discovered during topsoil stripping in advance of the construction of the Ballincollig-Ballineen gas pipeline and was excavated in 2000. The spread had been severely damaged by machinery prior to investigation. It extends to the S of the pipeline corridor outside the excavated area. A fulacht fia (CO109-094----) lies 1.7m to the E. (Tobin 2001; 2002h, 47-8) The above description is derived from 'The Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 5' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2009). A parcel is the land of a title, not an address. The owner's name is in the Land Registry of Tailte Éireann: a copy of the folio can be ordered on landdirect.ie, for a fee; this site names no owner.
