On roadside, beside entrance to Mullaghroe House; two stones set up on low stone platform: to left is irregular stone (5.5m x 3.5m), inscribed "E.O.S.1614"; to right is taller stone, standing upright (H 1.15m; Wth 0.3m). The former is known as a hospitality stone; according to Smith (1750, vol. 1, 195) the purpose of this stone was in 'signifying to all passengers, to repair to the house of Mr. Edmund MacSwiney, for entertainment'. Nearby is a castle of the Mac Sweeneys (CO083-012----). The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. On top of a area of rock outcrop, surrounded by tillage; no visible surface trace of castle shown as rectangular structure on 1842 OS 6-inch map. Gillman (1892b, 220) described the 'small portion of the castle' surviving in his day as 'probably of the fashion of Carrignamuck' (CO072-019----) (ibid.); he argues that it was built between 1465 and 1500 by the MacCarthys but occupied by their gallowglass, the MacSweenys. On top of a hillock, with steep descent to E and S; in pasture. Graveyard appears to have occupied flat top of hillock (c. 50m E-W; c. 30m N-S); delimited by denuded earthen bank to N (H c. 0.5m); by sharp fall in ground to E and S, traces of levelled bank at SE corner; to W line of levelled bank follows break in slope. Interior area uneven with low undulations, either due to burials or cultivation ridges. No evident gravemarkers. Slightly NE of centre, 4-storey tower (CO083-013003-) stands on site of former parish church of Dunisky (CO083-013002-); only visible trace of church is slight grass-covered platform (c. 24m E-W; c. 10m N-S) immediately W of tower. Though 1615 report says no remains of church in parish (Brady 1863, vol. 1, 310), Lewis (1837, vol. 1,582), mentions ruins of 'a small building' in graveyard; 1842 OS 6-inch map depicts ruinous building on E side of tower (9692); according to Fitzgerald (1930, 87) some remains visible until 1860s when 'a late owner destroyed all traces of the church and graveyard'. On top of a hillock, with commanding view in all directions; 4-storey tower built in graveyard and on site of former parish church of Dunisky (CO083-013001-). Square tower (int.: 3.75m N-S; 3.75m E-W) with prominent clasped buttress on each corner (see photograph Fitzgerald 1930, opp. 87). Ground floor ope in W wall gives access to interior; no trace of burials on earthen floor inside nor are any memorials evident. No internal floors or stairs survive. Floors above ground floor have central window in each wall and small corner fireplace. Roof survives: flat slabs resting on metal framework. Built by Charles Beamish, who lived in nearby Delacour Villa and died in 1867 (Beamish 1950, 11); McCarthy (1977, 227) notes local legend that Beamish built tower as mausoleum 'for his three wives', but he had only one wife and she outlived him (Beamish ibid., 119). Likely therefore that Charles Beamish, a noted 'eccentric' (ibid., 11), built tower as a folly beside his house. Tower not mentioned by Lewis (1837, vol. 1, 582), but shown on 1842 OS 6-inch map and termed 'mausoleum'; therefore probably erected c. 1840. In outcrop of old red sandstone immediately S of site of Dunisky church and graveyard (CO083-013001-). Discovered in 1927; investigated by L.S. Gogan (NMI) in 1930 after access was facilitated using explosives. The followingis a synopsis of an investigation by J.P. McCarthy (1977, 225-38; no measurements given). At least seven rock-cut chambers; present entrance, at S side of rock outcrop, is long narrow tunnel (long axis N-S) unroofed at S end and leading to S end of chamber 1. All chambers have barrel-vaulted roofs. Chamber 1: subrectangular (long axis N-S); small creephole at W side to collapsed passage; collapsed construction shaft at NW; rock cut ledge at S end; floor slopes upwards to N end; creepway at N end to chamber 2. Chamber 2: wedge-shaped (long axis N-S); floor level, narrowing towards N end; small recess at N end; short stone wall at SW corner in arched recess; rock cut ledge on E side. At N end of E wall creepway to chamber 3; creepway is staggered, first section being narrower than second. Chamber 3: rectangular (long axis E-W); floor level. Collapsed construction shaft at E end shared with chambers 4 and 5. Stone walling set into arched recess at E end. Rock cut benches along N, S and W walls. Creepholes opposite each other at E end of N and S walls to chambers 4 and 5, respectively. Chamber 4: rectangular (long axis N-S); floor level. At SE side is low platform raised 0.15m above floor. Passage leads E from S end of E wall to original entrance. Chamber 5: rectangular (long axis N-S). Short stone wall at N side. Floor slopes from N-S. Long creepway at S end 0.45m above floor level to chamber 6. Rock cut bench along E wall. Chamber 6: oval-shaped (long axis N-S); floor slopes downwards to S; rock ledges at E and W sides; square hole in floor at SE corner silted up, possibly a well. Chamber 7: (long axis N-S) lies at S end of chamber 6. Finds recorded are mallet head (Gogan) and two portions of furnace bottom (McCarthy). McCarthy (ibid.) describes the souterrain as atypical and suggests a 12th century date and associations with church. Flooded during Lee Valley Hydro-Electric scheme in 1956. Fahy (1957a, 75) reported that stone stood in level field 'a few hundred yards south of the River Lee'. It was '5ft 1in high, bluntly oval in plan, over 3ft wide and 2ft 6ins thick'. Long axis almost N-S (ibid.). Discovered in 1949 in sand pit; investigated by M.J O'Kelly and E.M Fahy. At least four rectangular stone-built chambers; walls corbelled; floors of hard tempered clay. Chamber 1: (L 3.04m; Wth 1.36m; H 1.51m; long axis N-S). Chamber 2: (L 2.43m; Wth 1.21m; H 1.51m; long axis E-W); reached by creepway in SW corner of chamber 1. Chamber 3: (L 3.04m; Wth 1.36m; H 1.51m; long axis N-S); NE corner reached by creepway at NW corner of chamber 2; roof collapsed; creepway at S end to chamber 4 (L 3.04m; Wth 1.36m; H 1.51m; long axis N-S). Collapsed creepway at S end of chamber 4 possibly led to further chambers. Site completely destroyed when revisited in 1952; area now submerged by Lee Valley Hydroelectric Scheme. Indicated on 1842 OS 6-inch map as road bridge over Buingea River; now disused; standing in reservoir of Lee Valley Hydro-electric Scheme. Sandstone bridge (Wth c. 8.25m); single semicircular arch with rusticated limestone voussoirs, limestone string course. Road surface denuded exposing top of arch. Bridge is mid-19th century in appearance; probably rebuilt when Cork-Macroom Direct Railway line, (which passed c. 100m to SW), was built in 1861-66 (Mulligan 1990, 27).
