Founded in 1170 by Donal Mor O'Brien (Stalley 1987, 244); in 1227 was the principal instigator in the Mellifont conspiracy (Gwynn and Hadcock 1988, 132). Dissolved in 1539-41, 'when most of its landed possessions were said to be waste' (Stalley ibid.). Later used as a parish church, when described as 'a mean Gothic building' (ibid.) Internal face of parapet wall (roadside) of random ashlar limestone; stone plaque reads "Rebuilt/1864 and 1865/XXVIII and XXIX Victoria/A. Oliver Lyons Engineer/ Joshua Hargrave Contractor". Remains of an earlier approach road from N integrated into E side of present road leading to bridge; random-rubble construction of earlier road visible in E side wall of road causeway; top of sandstone arch also visible, inserted key stone dated "1718" in wall. Earl of Cork built wooden bridge here prior to 1626, replacing a ferry associated with the Cistercian Abbey (14384), designed by Curteis (Brunacardi 1985, 1-3). Beneath the spread was a rectangular timber-lined trough (2.5m x 1.6m; D 0.37m) and immediately to the NW of it was a hearth consisting of a setting of stones. The spread was subsequently excavated in 2003 revealing a rectangular trough (2m x 1.5m; max. D 0.4m) with rounded corners. Fragments of a charred timber lining were recovered from the base of the trough and underneath the lining were found four tiny stake-holes, one in each corner of the trough. A further two stake-holes were found outside the base lining of the trough. The results of radiocarbon analysis showed that this fulacht fia was in use from at least the Late Bronze Age to the Early Iron Age. Excavation revealed three successive subrectangular inter-cutting troughs associated with the mound. The main fill of the earliest trough has been radiocarbon dated to 2400-2140 cal. BC. A large concentration of at least 40 pits and stake-holes occurred under the mound. The pits had average dimensions of 0.4m x 0.3m x 0.15m and contained charcoal-flecked clay fills. Many of the pits contained stones at their bases and the excavator notes that they may have been post-holes though but no pattern was discernible to suggest the presence of a house or other structure. At the foot of a steep N-facing slope. This keyhole-shaped corn-drying kiln was excavated in advance of construction along the route of the N8 Rathcormac-Fermoy Bypass in 2003. The bowl (diam. 1.5m; D 0.65m) of the kiln was cut into a natural incline and the flue (Wth 1m; D 0.5m) extended downslope to the S for a distance of 2.5m. The entire structure was lined with mainly unworked angular stones. One of the stones used to line the flue was identified as a fragment of a rotary quern. According to the excavator (O'Connell 2006, 80), another stone used to line the kiln may have been an unfinished rotary quernstone. An additional rotary quern fragment was recovered from the fill of a pit (see CO035-148----) located 15m to the W of the kiln. The hearth area at the S had been disturbed by agricultural activity. The carbonised fill of the bowl produced charred plant remains that were identified as being mainly oats. Charcoal from the same fill has been dated to 1270-1400 cal. AD. A concentration of stake-holes (CO035-148----) was located to the W of the kiln, though no definite structure was identified here. Excavated in 2003 in advance of the construction of the N8 Rathcormac-Fermoy Bypass. A cluster of three post-holes and four pits were discovered at the N of the site. The pits and post-holes together enclosed a roughly circular area (diam. 2.5m). The pits (diam. 0.38-0.55m; D 0.15-0.2m) were generally subcircular in shape. A large sherd of probable Bronze Age pottery was recovered from the fill of one of the pits. The post-holes (av. diam. 0.3m) contained packing-stones at the sides with the fills yielding two flint scrapers and sherds of highly decorated later Bronze Age pottery. The function of the site has been interpreted as domestic based on both the archaeological remains and the pottery present. The pits and post-holes were radiocarbon dated to 2140-1780 cal. BC. This fulacht fia was excavated in 2004 in advance of the construction of the N8 Rathcormac-Fermoy Bypass. It consisted of a shallow heavily disturbed mound (c. 15m N-S; 12.5m E-W) of heat-shattered stones and charcoal-enriched soil underneath which was a rectangular trough (2.8m x 2.2m; D 0.6m). The presence of oak fragments in the base of the trough suggests that it may have been timber-lined originally. Two post-holes and a subrectangular pit (0.65m x 0.45m; D 0.2m) were found in close proximity to the trough. The fulacht fia was radiocarbon-dated to cal. BC 384-203 (UB-6834), an early Iron Age date. A second associated circular pit (1.5m x 1.4m; D 0.35m), filled with clay containing burnt stone and charcoal, was located c. 15m to the E of the fulacht fia. This fulacht fia, located to the W of the bed of a diverted stream, was excavated in 2005 in advance of the construction of the N8 Rathcormac-Fermoy Bypass. It consisted of a spread (c. 10m x 9m) of heat-shattered stones and charcoal-enriched soil which overlay a trough, two pits, a possible second trough and a hearth. A total of 61 stake-holes were associated with the trough and the hearth. The trough (2.15m x 1.46m; D 0.48m) was rectangular and some of the stake-holes associated with it probably held a timber lining in place. The S corner of the trough was truncated by a pit (1.8m x 1.1m; D 0.53m) which may have been a second trough. The hearth (1.5m x 1.1m; D 0.05m) was located to the NW of the trough and its N edge was defined by 16 stake-holes. A further three stake-holes were located to the W of the hearth. The possible trough also truncated the N side of a pit (1.7m x 1.4m; D 0.35m). Another smaller pit (0.6m x 0.55m; D 0.45m) was found to the SE of the trough. Two groups of Bronze Age features (CO035-145----, CO035-146----) were excavated to the NE and SE of this fulacht fia. This group of features, located to the S of the bed of a diverted stream, was partially excavated in 2005 in advance of the construction of the N8 Rathcormac-Fermoy Bypass. The first of these comprised a curved feature (L c. 5.4m; Wth 1.2m; D 0.4m) which extended to the E, beyond the excavated area. It was filled with a black sandy silt which had inclusions of heat-shattered stones and charcoal. Between this feature and the stream bed was a stony spread (L 2m; D 0.16m) which overlay two pits: a large pit (1.1m x 0.42m; D 0.39m) and a smaller pit (0.4m x 0.23m; D 0.17m). The pits were situated 1.75m apart and both had been truncated by the stream bed. The fill of the larger of the pits included charcoal and heat-shattered stones. A further four pits, the smallest of which measured 0.54m x 0.53m; D 0.22m, and two stake-holes were excavated to the S of the linear feature. A flint flake was recovered from the fill of one of the pits. The fill from the largest of these pits (1.84m x 1.42m; D 0.3m) was radiocarbon-dated to the early Bronze Age, 2335-2036 cal. BC. The features comprised four pits, six post-holes, six stake-holes, a metalled surface and a fosse. Pit 1 (0.86m x 0.51m; D 0.19m) contained three fills of silt and charcoal. Pit 2 (0.97m x 0.76m; D 0.1m) contained a single fill which included heat-shattered stone and charcoal. Pit 3 (0.5m x 0.4m; D 0.37m) contained two fills, one of which contained heat-shattered stone and charcoal. Pit 4 (1.3m x 1.2m; D 0.47m) contained a silty clay fill with charcoal. All of the features were found immediately to the NE of a fulacht fia (CO035-144----) and to the N of a group of Early Bronze Age features (CO035-145----). The excavator suggested that the pits, post-holes and stake-holes were probably associated with the fulacht fia immediately to the SW. The metalled surface (1.5m x 1.1m; D 0.12m) was set in a hollow which was cut by the diverted stream. It was also cut by one of the four pits. It was not possible to determine whether a portion of a fosse (Wth 2.2m; D 0.28m) was contemporary with other activity in this area. A concentration of twenty stake-holes were excavated in 2003 in advance of the construction of the N8 Rathcormac-Fermoy Bypass. The stake-holes ranged in size (av. diam. 0.1-0.9m; av. D 0.1-0.9m) and were mainly circular or subcircular in plan. They were clustered immediately to the W of a corn-drying kiln (CO035-133----) but no discernible pattern was apparent. According to the excavator (O'Connell 2006i, 39), there were no stratigraphic or spatial evidence to group these features in association with the kiln. A number of dispersed pits were also recorded in this area. The fill of one of these pits contained frequent charcoal inclusions and occasional heat-shattered stones. A number of artefacts including metal, pottery and a fragment of a rotary quernstone were also included in the fill. The pit contained two fills that each comprised quantities of burnt stone and charcoal. Charcoal from the primary fill has been dated to 3510-3020 cal. BC (O'Connell 2006i, 75). The final fill of the trough was overlain by material from a fulacht fia (CO035-131----), situated c. 3.5m to the N. According to the excavator (ibid.), the function of this pit is somewhat enigmatic, however the presence of burnt and fire-cracked stones within both fills is an indication that it may have employed a similar function to a burnt mound trough. Gabled former chapel to east elevation with four-bay nave elevations and multiple-bay single-storey recent extension to north elevation. Hipped artificial slate roofs with carved limestone chimneystacks, cast-iron rainwater goods and carved limestone and render bracketed eaves courses. Cast-iron cross finials to tower and entrance projection. Cast-iron ridge crestings and dressed limestone coping to former chapel. Snecked cut sandstone walls to front elevation and to west elevation of recessed block with dressed limestone quoins, and rendered walls to rear elevations. String course dividing ground and first floors of front elevation, with carved limestone platbands above and below those of entrance projection with incised lettering in Latin and dates. Inset limestone roundels to spandrels of arcaded porch, and course of similar roundels to fifth stage of tower. Round-headed niches to first floor of front elevation of main block with carved limestone hood-mouldings, carved limestone plinths and carved limestone statues of Blessed Virgin Mary and Saint Colman. Canopied statue niche to first floor of north-west corner of tower with carved limestone plinth and hood-moulding. Carved limestone string courses dividing stages to tower. Traceried carved limestone oculi to fifth stage of tower. Round-headed window openings to all elevations except for square-headed windows of side elevations of later south-west rear block. One-over-one pane timber sliding sash windows to later rear blocks, with concrete block-and-start surrounds. Windows of other rear elevations, except for sandstone west elevation of south-west block, are unarticulated as their walling is rendered. Elsewhere, windows are four-over-four pane timber sliding sash windows with dressed limestone block-and-start surrounds and voussoirs and cut limestone sills. Windows to complex variously organised as single, double or triple arrangements. Double window openings to front elevation of main block have carved limestone pilasters dividing openings. Windows flanking statues to first floor of main block have double timber sash windows with conjoined roundel to top. Triple windows to top stage of tower divided by limestone columns with carved limestone archivolts and impost course, and timber louvers. Ground floor windows to recessed block and some to north gable and east wall of return to east block also double timber sash windows, with decorative fanlights. Similar, tripartite, window to east wall of same return block. Window openings to north elevation of former chapel have red brick surrounds and voussoirs. Arcaded porch has two round arches divided by carved limestone column having carved plinth and capital and carved sandstone banding, flanked by carved limestone square-profile engaged piers with moulded capitals and having carved stepped limestone voussoirs with keystones having incised cross motifs. Round-headed opening to inner wall of porch beyond with timber panelled door, fanlight, dressed limestone surround and tiled threshold. Round-headed door openings to tower, one having timber panelled door and one now infilled to lower section, with spoked fanlights and surrounds comprising carved limestone engaged columns, carved limestone impost course and curved chamfered voussoirs. Depressed arch opening to former chapel with red brick surround and voussoirs and recent timber doors. Complex sited at right angle to streets, with rear projections backing onto Emmet Street, with chapel attached to south-west corner, and flight of cut limestone steps to grounds to north. Site bounded by rubble sandstone walls with cut render copings and rendered walls. Square-profile carved limestone piers to entrance to north-west with carved plinths and capitals and inset with round-headed panels having mosaic decorations. Shopfront comprising fluted timber pilasters flanking openings, timber architrave, timber battened fascia and timber cornice. Square-headed plate glass windows with timber surrounds and render sill.
