On the E shore of Kinsale Harbour, facing James Fort (CO112-036---). This bastioned star-shaped fort is about 10 acres in extent. It was built on the site of Ringcurran Castle in 1678-83 and designed by architect William Robinson. It is overlooked landward, a weakness exposed by besieging Williamite forces in 1690 when the garrison surrendered after a 13 day siege. It is an irregular polygon in plan, with three bastions facing inland (Cockpit, Flagstaff and North), and two demi-bastions on shoreline. The bastions are linked by massive masonry ramparts (H c. 14m); along the shoreline outer ramparts form a second tier of gun batteries; Orrery's battery to the S forms a third tier. The outside ramparts to landward have a dry moat, covered way and a sloping glacis of which little survives. Central landward bastion is the largest and once served as the citadel of the fort. Most of the gun embrasures survive though many have been altered or enlarged. The entrance gateway between the Flagstaff and North bastions was erected in the 18th century - the original one was destroyed in the 1690 siege. Bastions and ramparts are basically unchanged since the 17th century; the interior is however much altered as the fort functioned as military barracks throughout the 18th and 19th centuries when officers' quarters, soldiers' quarters, governor's house, guard house etc. were built inside the fort. A 17th-century vaulted magazine and diagonal blast wall survive, as well as part of the inward-facing ramparts of the citadel. Since 1973 the OPW have carried out repairs; an archaeological excavation took place in 1998 (https://excavations.ie/report/1998/Cork/0003253/), and additional monitoring in 2003 (https://excavations.ie/report/2003/Cork/0009591/). The fort is now a National Monument, open to the public. Square-plan quay, built c.1870, comprising battered rock-faced limestone walls. Recently constructed limestone parapet with render copings. Slipway to north having squared rock-faced limestone block wall with rendered surface. Rubble limestone parapet walls to road to north-east with solider coping, having square-headed drain openings and blind round-headed drain openings with limestone block voussoirs.

Attached single-bay double-height neo-classical pedimented gateway, dated 1759, with central break front to north elevation. Incorporating fabric of earlier structure (built 1678). Pitched ashlar limestone roof surmounting tooled limestone eaves course. Tooled limestone cornice to pediment and inscribed data plaque to north gable. Tooled ashlar limestone walls throughout having rusticated Gibbsian façade to front (north) elevation. Dressed rubble stone walls to interior elevations and soffit of carriageway. Round-headed carriageway having ashlar limestone voussoirs with keystones, having raised Gibbsian surround to front elevation. North elevation arch modified to accommodate rendered elliptical arch having ashlar limestone piers with exposed red brick repairs to arch. Dressed limestone threshold to front elevation accesses via recent timber bridge, dressed limestone walls flanking path to south. Pivots and pulley wheels for inner drawbridge remain. Replacement double-leaf timber battened doors to north of gateway. Battlement walls to sides (east, west) and ditch to north spanned by recent timber bridge.

Round-headed window openings with red brick block-and-start surrounds and stone sills to ground floor, having six-over-six pane timber sliding sash windows having spoked fanlights to upper sashes. Square-headed door opening to front (south-east) elevation having tooled limestone surround, surmounted by dentilated cornice. Cut limestone doorstep and replacement double-leaf glazed timber doors surmounted by spoked fanlight. Adjoining outbuilding to side (south-west) in ruins.

Rubble stone walls with multiple square-headed vent openings throughout with replacement red brick infill. Vent openings to sides with red brick surrounds. Camber-headed window opening with red brick sill to first floor of front (north-west) elevation having red brick voussoirs and block-and-start surround. Square-headed door opening to front elevation with red brick block-and-start surround having replacement steel door. Detached single-bay single-storey rubble stone former cooperage to north-west. Single pitch slate roof. Rubble stone walls. Square-headed window openings with render sills to side (south-east) elevation with red brick voussoirs and replacement three-over-six pane timber sliding sash windows. Square-headed door opening to front (south-west) elevation having red brick voussoirs and replacement timber battened door. Detached five-bay single-storey former guard house, built c.1820, comprising three-bay block with arcade to northern end, with lower two-bay block to southern end, and having later extension to rear (west). Now in use as ticket office and information point. Hipped slate roofs with red brick dog-tooth over sailing eaves course, aluminium rainwater goods and recent rooflights. Rubble stone walls with projecting plinth wall to front elevation. Square-headed window openings with stone sills, having red brick voussoirs and block-and-start surrounds, three-over-six pane timber sliding sash windows to side (south) and front (east) elevations with timber occasional timber casements to front elevation. Square-headed cell window openings to rear extension with dressed limestone surrounds. Red brick round-headed arches springing from rubble stone piers to arcade. Square-headed door opening to interior of arcaded section, having red brick voussoirs and cut limestone step, with replacement double-leaf glazed timber doors. Camber-headed door opening to front elevation having red brick voussoirs and replacement timber battened door. Cobbled surface to front and side (north). Remains of hexagonal plan rubble stone water tower plinth-height foundations to side (north).

Square-headed window openings with stone sills to front elevation, having three-over-six pane timber sliding sash windows to ground floor and eight-pane timber casement windows to first floor abutting eaves level. Square-headed door openings to front elevation with replacement timber battened doors. Set within battlements with rubble stone retaining walls to sides (west, east) and rear (south). Cobbled surface to front, side (east) and rear. Half basement level store set into retaining wall to rear (south-east).

Dressed rubble limestone walls built to courses retaining gables, having dressed limestone quoins and stop-chamfer to north-west corner, slate hanging to south gable. Square-headed window openings with limestone sills to first floor of front elevation and first and ground floors of rear elevation, having red brick voussoirs. Surmounted by pediment with dressed moulded limestone cornice. Square-headed door opening to rear. Partially demolished wall to northern end of rear elevation having exterior rubble stone staircase with cut limestone steps and square-headed door opening to basement level. Camber-headed fireplaces to interior of basement level with cast-iron furniture with ‘VR’ insignia. Numerous outbuildings to rear including a coach house and stables.

Star-shaped fort, commenced 1678, subsequently altered and modified, completed 1804. Comprising six-point outer Glacis to landward sides (north, east). Covered way and ditch to interior with dressed limestone retaining walls, traversing earthen and stone embankments to covered way perpendicular to ditch and glacis (intended to restrict movement around the covered way by enemy forces). Battered dressed rubble limestone outer blast walls spanning seaward (south, west) sides springing from bedrock, having ramparts and covered way to interior. Battered dressed limestone star shaped fort to interior of outer fortifications comprising five diamond shaped battered limestone bastions. Two to seaward side, named as Devil’s and Charles’ bastions, remainder facing inland, named as the North, Cockpit and Flagstaff bastions. Flagstaff bastion designed to act as Citadel, being defensible from both within and without the fort with Charles's bastion being added 1804. Interior ramparts to interconnecting curtain walls and bastions with parapet walls having rubble stone firing steps and splayed firing embrasures of mixed limestone block, rubble stone, yellow or red brick construction. Pair of circular swivel gun platforms to Charles’ bastion, further gun emplacements evident along seaward side walls with extensive length of curtain wall with multiple firing embrasures to south facing elevation of interior wall. Pepper pot sentry boxes to Cockpit bastion and outermost (south-west) point of seaward side outer blast wall. Recent concrete spire roofs with red brick eaves courses. Running bond red brick hexagonal plan walls with camber headed doorways facing to interior of fort. Pedimented limestone arched carriageway (north) formerly with draw bridge over ditch. Terracing to interior of fort having dressed rubble limestone retaining walls, having numerous buildings in various states of repair. Buildings include guard houses, ordnance sheds, officers' stables, barrack stores, engine house, a substantial magazine with accompanying blast wall, governor's house and soldiers' quarters.
