On S side of Blackwater River, c. 1km SSE of Ballyhooly. Millrace taken from mountain stream by weir c. 350m to S. Long rectangular mill (long axis NE-SW) of 3 storeys, with modern roof. Wheel-pit (Wth 2.15m; L 8m) within building near S end; wear marks on sides of pit indicate that it housed a large overshot 15ft by 5ft waterwheel (FFIAS, 15); it now houses a modern pelton-type turbine. Most of gearing and machinery removed, but central 1st-floor room retains bedstone in situ. Attached to mill, at NW side of NE end, is 3-bay 3-storey 'Millvale Cottage'. Collection of machinery from other mills, including Vickers Peters oil engine, cast-iron saw bench and two hydraulic rams (Evans and Vulcan), at site. According to present owner, worked as flax mill by his grandfather. Named 'Flour Mill' and 'Millvale Co' on 1842 OS 6-inch map. In pasture, atop hill, at junction of four fields. Circular area (25m N-S; 23m E-W) defined by earthen bank (int. H 1.05m; ext. H 2.55m) SE->NNE; short section of fosse (D 0.25m) survives to N for c. 6m. Bank heavily overgrown; stone facing on external face of bank to N, similar to stone field boundary extending W from NW bank. Small break in bank to NNE. External fosse, hachured SW->NW on 1935 OS 6-inch map, no longer survives. Interior raised and slopes down to S; E side truncated by N-S field boundary with drain running along W side. North-western buildings is five-bay with later block at right angles to north-west end, and south-eastern building is multiple-bay with lean-to addition to south-east gable. Pitched corrugated-iron roofs, with corrugated-iron canopies to front elevation of both buildings. Metal ventilators to south-eastern building. Corrugated-iron cladding to walls, over concrete plinth walls. Addition to north-western building has rendered walls, with metal canopy over doorway in front gable. Square-headed openings throughout, with two-over-two pane timber sliding sash windows to north-west building. Square-headed window openings, having fixed timber windows to second floor, and two-over-two pane windows elsewhere, all with render sills. Square-headed window openings to ruinous block, some with six-over-six pane timber casement windows. Square-headed door opening to main house with half-glazed timber panelled door.
