In pasture, on an E-facing slope overlooking Castletownbere. According to local information, the ground collapsed during land reclamation works revealing a series of underground chambers running in a NE-SW direction for c. 35m. The chambers (Wth c. 1m; H c. 1.3m) were 'barrel-shaped' and cut from clay and were linked by 'narrower passages' or creep-holes, which contained 'cobbled stones - like rounded beach stones'. The floors of the chambers were c. 1.8m below the ground level. According to local information, a substantial number of human bones (CO127-058002-) were found in one of the chambers. The chambers were subsequently filled with earth and the ground was levelled off and re-seeded. This 35m strip now displays a slight depression and a distinctive growth pattern. The above description is derived from 'The Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 5' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2009). In rough fern and gorse-covered pasture, on a steep E-facing slope overlooking Castletownbere and Bere Island. A raised oval area (26m E-W; c. 20m N-S) is enclosed by an earthen bank (Wth 5.5m; int. H 1.1m; ext. H 0.85) SW-NW, defined by a steep scarp (H 0.3-7m) NW-SE and is truncated by a linear N-S open drain and a field boundary SE-SW. The interior is substantially raised (H 7m) at E to compensate for the slope. The entire rath is almost totally obscured by an overgrowth of ferns, briars, bushes and trees. An ESB pole was recently erected on the enclosing bank at W. The above description is derived from 'The Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 5' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2009). Date of upload: 22 December 2009 - CO127-060001: Hut site, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CCO127-060001-. In rough peaty hill pasture, on a sheltered terrace, on a NW-facing slope overlooking a small NE-SW boggy valley. The remains of a circular hut site (diam. 3.5m), which are largely hidden by long moor grass, defined by an intermittent row of upright slabs (T up to 0.1m; H 0.1-0.85m) which protrude above the surface of the bog. Faint traces of the tops of stones protruding from the bog suggest the possibility of an outer row. A gap (Wth c. 0.7m) at the SW may indicate a possible entrance location. A possible standing stone (CO127-062002-) and an enclosure (CO127-050003-) are c. 20m and c. 40m to the N, respectively. The above description is derived from 'The Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 5' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2009). In rough peaty hill pasture, on the S side of a sheltered NE-SW valley to the NW of Bealnagour. According to local information, a standing stone (0.76m x 0.61m; H c. 2.44m) stood at this location until it was removed in the 1970s. A hut site (CO1127-060001-) is situated c. 20m to the S and an enclosure (CO127-060003-) is c. 20m to the N. The above description is derived from 'The Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 5' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2009). A parcel is the land of a title, not an address. The owner's name is in the Land Registry of Tailte Éireann: a copy of the folio can be ordered on landdirect.ie, for a fee; this site names no owner. A price is the price recorded for a past sale, not a valuation.
