Discovered in 1906 when landowner 'was lowering a headland' (Buckley 1907,116), c. 40m N of, and in next field to, existing ogham stone (CO042-049002-). Macalister (1945, 62, no. 58) gave inscription as CATTUBUTTAS MAQ[...; the scores of the second word terminate at a broken end (see drawing Macalister, ibid.). According to White (1905-18, vol. 1, 327), in same field 'about 200 yards to the south, in a gap, is a quantity of broken stones, some of which have some traces of Ogham marks', which now appear to have disappeared; White (ibid.) also noted that 'according to local belief, Ogham stones are buried in the vicinity of Greenhill'. The stone (1.54m 0.46m 0.36m, measurements taken from 3d data) lies against field fence, protected by semicircular cattle grid; when this was laid down in 1985, short excavation by OPW revealed a recent shallow trench cut into much larger ditch possibly belonging to an ancient enclosure (pers. comm. C. Manning); marked curve in field fence here might respect line of ancient enclosure of which there is no other visible surface trace. Burnfort ogham stone (CO042-052003-) found c. 900m to SE. (Power et al. 1997, no. 7964) This stone has been studied as part of the ‘Ogham in 3D’ project undertaken by the School of Celtic Studies, Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies. In pasture, with extensive view to S; upright stone (H 2.5m; 0.6m x 0.3m) with inscription cut along SE edge starting 0.45m from ground to near full height of stone; inscription weathered and defaced by cattle rubbing andhone scores. Macalister (1945, 62, no. 57) gave inscription as TRENU MAQIMUCOI QRITTI; due to defacing of lower scores, first word given as TTGENU by Brash (1879, 138); MacNeill (1909, 361) gave first word as TRENO, areading McManus (1991, 179) considered 'possible'. In Sept. 1985 cattlegrid laid around stone by OPW; short excavation of circular strip 1m widewith its inner edge 1m from centre of stone revealed nothing except N-S cultivation furrows and ploughmarks (pers. comm. C. Manning). Second oghamstone (7964) lies c. 40m to N in next field. Burnfort ogham stone (7965) found c. 900m to SE. (Power et al. 1997, no. 7965) This stone has been studied as part of the ‘Ogham in 3D’ project undertaken by the School of Celtic Studies, Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies. To access details go to the following website: http://ogham.celt.dias.ie/search.php?ciic=57 Updated by: Paul Walsh Revised date of upload: 31 December 2014 - CO042-049003: Enclosure, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CCO042-049003-. A limited archaeological excavation was undertaken in 1985 to facilitate the installation of cattle grids around two ogham stones (CO042-049001-, CO042-049002-) at Greenhill, Co. Cork (Manning 2000, 107-12). 'An old cut feature' was noted under the present field boundary in the vicinity of the most northerly ogham stone (CO042-049001-) (ibid., 112). The excavator suggested that the curving E and S boundaries of the field are possibly on the line of an ancient elongated oval enclosure (ibid.). The dimensions of this enclosure are c. 200m N-S and c. 150m E-W and the two ogham stones lie on its SE arc. The above description is derived from 'The Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. A parcel is the land of a title, not an address. The owner's name is in the Land Registry of Tailte Éireann: a copy of the folio can be ordered on landdirect.ie, for a fee; this site names no owner. A price is the price recorded for a past sale, not a valuation.
