This fulacht fia was excavated in 2003 in advance of the construction of the N8 Rathcormac-Fermoy Bypass. Excavation revealed a thin scatter of heat-shattered stones and charcoal-enriched soil, an oval trough (1.6m x 1.24m; D 0.54m) with three associated stake-holes, a smaller irregular pit and two post-holes. (Cotter 2006f, 61) The above description is derived from 'The Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 5' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2009). Date of upload: 22 December 2009 - CO044-086: Charcoal-making site, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CCO044-086----. Excavation in advance of the construction of the N8 Rathcormac-Fermoy Bypass in 2003 uncovered two circular pits: one (diam. 1m; D 0.1m) and the second (diam. 0.6m; D 0.26m). Three stake-holes were uncovered close to one of the pits. Both pits showed evidence of intense burning and contained layers of charcoal. According to the excavator (Cotter 2006f, 61), these are believed to have been charcoal production pits. This charcoal-making site is probably of a similar date to another one (CO044-088----), situated c. 350m to the NNE, which returned a radiocarbon date of AD1420-1640. (Cotter 2006f, 61) The above description is derived from 'The Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 5' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2009). Date of upload: 22 December 2009 Works at or in relation to a recorded monument need two months' written notice to the National Monuments Service (National Monuments (Amendment) Act 1994, section 12). ## Architectural heritage (National Inventory of Architectural Heritage) No building of the National Inventory of Architectural Heritage stands in the townland of Kilbrien. ## Ground and risks (Radon Risk Map of Ireland, EPA; Landslide Susceptibility Classification and LiDAR, Geological Survey Ireland) - Radon: at the centre of the townland of Kilbrien, about 1 in 5 homes in this area is likely to have high radon levels. A parcel is the land of a title, not an address. The owner's name is in the Land Registry of Tailte Éireann: a copy of the folio can be ordered on landdirect.ie, for a fee; this site names no owner.
