Forming NW corner of graveyard (14586), within early ecclesiastical enclosure (13879). Only W gable (int. 4.52m N-S) with short returns of N and S walls (Wth 0.8m), now stand; depicted on 1842 OS 6-inch map as rectangular structure (c. 38m E-W; c. 12m N-S). Gable, heavily overgrown, survives to near full height; splayed and lintelled window embrasure towards top. North wall (L 3.4m) terminates at tree. West end (L 4.8m) of S wall survives to full height and terminates in straight ingoing, probably indicating door ope; immediately to E is gap (L 2.8m), followed by short stretch of low foundations (L 1.6m). Three inserted beam slots on S wall and one in NW corner suggest former presence of loft. Indicated though not named church (see 14428) on 1842, 1905 and 1935 OS 6-inch maps. High window in W gable and doorway near W end of S wall are standard features of late-medieval church. Probably remains of parish church of Kilcummer, which was reported 'in ruins' in 1615 (Brady 1863, vol.2, 257). The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 4: North Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2000). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. On W side of road; towards SW side of early ecclesiastical enclosure (13879). Rectangular graveyard (c. 29m E-W; c. 22m N-S), enclosed by stone wall with vertical coping; entrance with stone piers and wrought iron gate on E side; remains of church (14427) forms NW corner of graveyard; site of second church (14428) c. 30m to NE. Graveyard in use; earliest headstone noted dated 1717. Southernmost strip of interior (L 6m N-S) drops gently to S boundary wall (D 1m); no burials in this lower area. Second sunken area (D 0.5m) in SE corner contains some burials. The 1842 OS 6-inch map shows graveyard extending short distance further to S; earthen bank (H 1.3m) parallel to and c. 6m S of S wall probably indicates this. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 4: North Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2000). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. On gentle SW-facing slope, immediately above steep drop down to Awbeg River. Roughly oval enclosure (c. 89.4m NNW-SSE; c. 120m WSW-ENE), bisected by road extending NNW-SSE; church (14427) and graveyard (14586) to SW of centre; site of church (14428) in N half abutting W side of road. In tillage field to E of road, enclosure defined by scarp (H 0.5m) to NNE, low bank (H c. 0.25m) NE->SE, possible low double bank with intervening fosse to SSE. In pasture field to W of road, enclosure defined by scarp (max. H 1.3m) SSE->NW, gap to NW, scarp topped by low rise NW->NNW, concrete surfaces on N side extend E to roadway. Interior to N of graveyard overgrown; small rectangular area of brambles and stone (L 2m) immediately SE of gap in scarp to NW could be remains of structure. Low banks extend N-S parallel to E graveyard wall in area between graveyard and road; road S of graveyard entrance bordered to W by low terraced rise. Externally, further area of raised ground extends to S of main enclosure (c. 27.7m N-S) W of road, defined by scarp (H 0.8m), topped by low rise at S end; gap between low rise and rise bordering road. Enclosure indicated on 1842 OS 6-inch map by broken line, extending to NNW from SW corner of graveyard, then curving c. 30m N of graveyard to extend WSW-ENE towards road; church (14428) is depicted as abutting S side of this stretch. No visible surface trace of the 'many and curious old headstones' noted by Power (1932, 109-10) 'on the outer side of the more modern graveyard'. Windele noted 'an ancient town and round abbey at Kilcummer...destroyed by the soldiers of Cromwell...' (Grove White 1905-25, vol. 3, 277). Grove White (ibid.) noted 'the foundations of several buildings' near the church. Power (1932, 30) equates Kilcummer with Cell Commuir in Crichad an Chaoilli, chief church of Tuath Hi Bece Abha. Within N perimeter of early ecclesiastical enclosure (13879), c. 30m NE of church (14427) and abutting W side of road. Outline of rectangular church (c. 40m E-W; c. 10m N-S) indicated on 1842 OS 6-inch map and named 'Site of Kilcummer Church'; road (N-S) crosses structure off-centre to E. Indicated by symbol for antiquity and named 'Kilcummer Church (site of)' on 1905 OS 6-inch map. Named 'Kilcummer Church (in ruins)' on 1935 OS 6-inch map and indicated as L-shaped structure (long axis N-S, projection to W at S end). Described in OS Field Memorandum (1931) as 'fragment of an ancient wall, probably a portion of the church incorporated in the road fence close by'; accompanying sketch annotated '10 feet long, 12 feet high'. What now survives is low grass-covered L-shaped rise (L c. 12.8m WSW-ENE; projecting 7.1m to NNW at WSW end); NNW side and extent to ENE not visible due to overgrowth; possibly some remains of WSW end of structure, ENE end of which is shown along roadside on 1935 OS 6-inch map. Possibly remains of large parish church which was replaced by smaller church (14427) in graveyard to S in late-medieval period. A church at Kilcummer listed in Papal Taxation of 1291 (Brady 1863, vol. 2, 257). The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. NW edge of enclosure truncated by railway line (visible also as cropmark in aerial photograph). No visible surface trace of enclosure though slight hollow noted in area. On top of a cliff on N bank of Blackwater River. Excavated in 1990 (Anderson 1991; 1993) after discovery of diagnostic Early Mesolithic flint artefacts during field-study project (1983-5) (Woodman 1989). Seven trenches were opened comprising an area of 35 square meters (Anderson 1993, fig. 3.2). Lowest lying area excavated produced gravel spread, probably in situ, delimiting hollow with two stake-holes (undated); elsewhere cultivation appeared to have removed any traces of occupation. Over 300 flint pieces were recovered, the majority coming from 'ploughsoil horizon' (Anderson 1991). Most of these consisted of blades and blade fragments; also found were ten microliths including rods and one scalene triangle; other fragments included three microburins, two scrapers, a single-platformed core, and much debitage (Anderson 1993, fig. 3.3). Assemblage dated 'c. 9000 b.p. - 8000 b.p. based on parallels with other sites' (Anderson 1991). The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Road bridge (Wth c. 3.2m; long axis NE-SW), built at slight angle over Awbeg River. Random-rubble construction. Six semicircular arches (span c. 3.5m) with rough voussoirs; off-centre E arch replaced by cement. Widened on upstream side (NW) by c. 4m with similar but straight-sided arches; roughly dressed voussoirs; low pointed cutwaters. Bridge possibly of 17th-century date; bridge indicated here on Down Survey (1655-6) barony map. Bridgetown Abbey (14381) c. 700m to S. A parcel is the land of a title, not an address. The owner's name is in the Land Registry of Tailte Éireann: a copy of the folio can be ordered on landdirect.ie, for a fee; this site names no owner.
