O'Donoghue (1986, 253) translated the townland name as 'Cill na Romhanach - Church of the Romans'. According to Hourihane and Hourihane (1979, 71), the name Kilnaravanagh referred 'in all probability to those who adopted the Roman calender' for the determination of Easter, in the 630s AD.
