On S bank of Awbeg River, adjacent to Cahermee bridge and c. 650m W of tuck mills (15247). Indicated on 1842 OS 6-inch map as rectangular structure (long axis NE-SW), named 'tuck mill', with millrace, taken from bend in river c. 450m to W, flowing through centre. Survives as low overgrown remains of 2-storey rectangular mill (int. c. 11m NE-SW) with projection at SW end of NW wall. Built of roughly-coursed limestone blocks. Divided internally into two rooms by wall with ground and 1st-floor door opes. Blocked arches over millrace in NE end of NW and SE walls of southern room (int.: 6.33m NE-SW; 3.93m NW-SE). Northern room slightly narrower (5.06m E-W; 3.75m S-N); door ope in NW wall. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. In tillage, forming NE quadrant of levelled early ecclesiastical enclosure (13889). Shown on 1842 OS 6-inch map as roughly trapezoidal area (c. 55m E-W; c. 50m N-S); shown as extended to E by c. 10m on 1905 OS 6-inch map, with church (14441) in SW angle. All that survives now above ground is stump of church wall standing in slightly elevated stony area (6.5m N-S; 7m E-W) surrounded by tillage field. On N side of wall is fragment of graveslab of Charles Eden; full inscription with date of 1625 given by Grove White (1905-25, vol. 3, 292). Enclosure visible as soilmark in aerial photographs (CASAP), as is smaller wedge-shaped enclosure (c. 35m E-W; c. 20m N-S at wider E end) in SW corner of quadrant, with church at E end (latter enclosure not shown on any edition of OS 6-inch map). Referring to church, in 1838, Windele (Grove White ibid.) noted 'no burial ground is attached, and no grave is visible' apart from grave slab of Eden (see above). Jones (1910, 57) noted that in several fields surrounding the church 'human bones have been dug up'. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 4: North Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2000). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Towards SW corner of graveyard (14603), within early ecclesiastical enclosure (13889). All that remains of church is small fragment of uncoursed limestone walling (c. 5m E-W), standing in small stony untilled area which is raised slightly above level of surrounding field. Windele, visiting in 1838 (Grove White 1905-25, vol. 3, 292), described two side walls standing, 2ft 10in thick, with no windows or door in either. Depicted as rectangular church on 1842, 1905 and 1937 OS 6-inch maps (c. 20m E-W; c. 8m N-S); described by Power (1932, 100) as c. 58ft long by 20ft wide, and in one compartment; Power (ibid.) saw S side wall standing to about 8ft, with one 'Irish (pre-Invasion) window', also small portion of W gable. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 4: North Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2000). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. In tillage, on gentle SW-facing slope. No visible surface treac of large levelled enclosure with Killadda church and graveyard (14441, 14603) in NE quadrant. Soilmark of bank of oval enclosure (c. 120m N-S; c. 100m E-W) visible in aerial photograph (CASAP); bank indicated as curving field boundary W->SE, and NW and NE quadrants of interior marked off by field boundaries on 1842, 1905 and 1937 OS 6-inch maps. Second aerial photograph (CASAP) shows cropmark of two concentric fosses, one external to bank and second c. 25m inside bank. Cropmark of fosse of circular enclosure (diam. c. 35m) in interior, slightly off centre to SW, also visible in aerial photograph; Cropmark of levelled field boundary marking off NW quadrant of oval enclosure truncates circular enclosure at NNW. According to Crichad an Chaoilli (Power 1932, 53), 'Cill Fhada (is) the burial ground' of the tuath of 'Magh Finne' and 'it is (Mochaemoc) Mac Congairb that blessed that church'. The 'original circular enclosing fence' was of earth and 'judging from the surviving section of rampart the space enclosed was about four acres in area - a kind of saucer-like depression on an elevated site' (ibid., 100). Four field boundaries, visible as cropmarks in aerial photograph (CASAP), radiate outwards from enclosure.
