In pasture, on a S-facing hillslope overlooking Crow Head. The remains of a circular hut site (5.3m E-W; 5.2m N-S) defined by a partially eroded earthen bank (Wth 1.6m; H 0.75m) which varies in height because of several cattle-breaks. The level interior is raised (H 1m) at the S and cut (D 0.6m) into the upslope at the N to compensate for the hillslope. Another hut site (CO126-033002-) is c. 40m to the NE and a standing stone (CO126-033003-) is c. 100m to the SE. The above description is derived from 'The Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. In pasture, on a S-facing hillslope overlooking Crow Head. The remains of a circular hut site (diam. 5m) defined by a partially eroded, gorse-covered, earthen bank (Wth 1.5m; H 0.8m). There are several cattle-breaks in the bank which stands to varying heights. The level partially obscured interior is raised (H 0.7m) at the S and cut (D 0.4m) into the upslope at the N to compensate for the hillslope. Another hut site (CO126-033001-) is c. 40m to the SW and a standing stone (CO126-033003-) is c. 100m to the SSE. The above description is derived from 'The Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. In undulating pasture, on a S-facing hillslope overlooking Crow Head and the mouth of Bantry Bay. This standing stone (1.1m x 0.5m; H 1.3m) was recorded in 1993 as upright and orientated NE-SW. The stone is now prostrate and lies 2m to the NW of its well-preserved original location. It is roughly triangular in section, measuring L 1.3m, 1.1m and 0.95m along its three sides. There is a hut site (CO126-033001-) c. 100m to the NW and another hut site (CO126-033002-) is c. 100m to the NNW. The above description is derived from 'The Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. In pasture, on a terrace of a S-facing hillslope with commanding views E-W from Blackball Head to Crow Head and over the mouth of Bantry Bay. According to local information, older people remember part of a circular bank of earth and stone at this location. It was levelled and is not visible at ground level. The location is still known as 'Cathair na Gaoithe' which translates as 'stone fort of the wind'. The above description is derived from 'The Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 5' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2009). Date of upload: 22 December 2009 - CO126-035001: Ringfort - rath, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CCO126-035001-. In pasture, on the lower S-facing slopes of Lackacroghan hill with extensive views over the mouth of Bantry Bay. A circular raised area (diam. 45m E-W; 43m N-S) is enclosed by an earthen bank (Wth 8.9m; int. H 1.25m; ext. H 3.9m to the base of the fosse) of varying height, but best preserved along the S-N arc, and by an external fosse (Wth 3-5m) SSW-NW. There are several cattle-breaks in the bank, which is lower (H 0.1-0.7m) and more damaged along the N-S arc. A children's burial ground (CO126-035002-) is in the level interior, which is in pasture. The fosse now accommodates a farm road, along which the external face of the enclosing bank has been cut back, giving it a vertical appearance. A field wall runs along the outer face of the fosse. It is likely that the fosse has been distorted over the years. At W, a short section of the fosse appears to have been cut through brittle shale-type rock, which is visible on both sides (Wth c. 3-4m; H 1.9m at the outer W side). Some of this cutting may be a more recent occurrence. A stone field wall has been inserted into the external base of the bank along the ESE-S arc. A farm building abuts the external face of the bank at N. The above description is derived from 'The Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 5' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2009). Date of upload: 22 December 2009 - CO126-035002: Children's burial ground, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CCO126-035002-. In the W half of a rath (CO126-035001-). A raised fern-covered rectangular area (12m E-W; 8m N-S; H 0.5m) containing plain uninscribed stone grave-markers, generally orientated N-S. According to local information, this is a 'cillíneach' or children's burial ground. The above description is derived from 'The Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 5' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2009). Date of upload: 22 December 2009 - CO126-036: Enclosure, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CCO126-036----. In rough hill pasture, on a NE-facing slope and just NE of the summit of Lackacroghan. A circular area (7m N-S; 6.7m E-W) is defined by the poorly preserved remains of an earthen bank (Wth 0.9m; H 0.15m) from which stones protrude (H 0.1m) at irregular intervals. The N quadrant of the interior is raised (H 0.35m) by a partially grass-covered stone revetment. Rushes obscure most of the interior. The above description is derived from 'The Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 5' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2009). Date of upload: 22 December 2009 - CO126-037: Hut site, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CCO126-037----. In pasture, on a break on the lower S-facing slopes of Lackacroghan. The remains of a circular hut site (diam. 6.7m) defined by a stone wall (T 0.6m; H 0.4m) which consists mainly of larger stones, some of which are upright or leaning. Some stones may have been removed from the hut site to build the nearby field walls. The level interior is raised (H 0.3m) above the outer ground level. The above description is derived from 'The Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 5' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2009). Date of upload: 22 December 2009 - CO126-038: Cairn - unclassified, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CCO126-038----. In pasture, on the lower S-facing slopes of Lackacroghan with extensive views over the mouth of Bantry Bay. This sod-covered circular cairn (13m E-W; 12m N-S; H 0.9m) is truncated by a N-S field wall which crosses its E sector. Stones appear to have been removed from the cairn and subsequently used to build part of the field wall. This resulted in a hollow to the E of the centre of the cairn where other stones are now exposed. Stones are also exposed intermittently along the S and W portions of the cairn. An undisturbed sod-covered section of the cairn is visible immediately to the E of the wall. The above description is derived from 'The Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 5' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2009). A parcel is the land of a title, not an address. The owner's name is in the Land Registry of Tailte Éireann: a copy of the folio can be ordered on landdirect.ie, for a fee; this site names no owner. A price is the price recorded for a past sale, not a valuation.
