Exposed walls of wheel-house survive; site traditionally known as holy well (9290). Excavation revealed dam, crossing floor of glen, c. 55 yards E of wheel-house, which originally consisted of an earthen, dry-stone revetted bank (ibid., 16), cut through by narrow drystone revetted water-channel (L 14ft; Wth 1ft 4in). Below dam artificial head-race (L 150ft; Wth 2ft 6in; D 2ft 10in), dug into gravel bed of glen, carried water to upper end of sloping wooden flume, buried inground immediately behind wheel-house. Wooden flume (L 8ft), rectangular in section and originally roofed with stone slabs, had lower end set into rectangular opening (Wth 2ft 4in; H 1ft 10in) in rear of wheel-house. Partially sunken wheel-house rectangular in plan (7ft x 12ft), open to W. Side walls (T 8ft; H 12ft 3in) of random-rubble dry-stone construction using large sandstone slabs; rear (E) wall 'built of four slabs standing, one on the other, on edge' (ibid., 18); five oaken planks formed floor. Remains of wooden water-wheel (401/2 in) found in wheel-house consisted of wooden hub which once had 23 paddles attached (fragments of 11 were found)(ibid., 22). Four millstones uncovered on site, three runners tones and one bedstone. Tail race (Wth 12ft; D 4ft) to W of wheel-house cut into natural gravel bed of glen. In level pasture; rectangular tower (14.65m E-W; 9.7m N-S) with triangular projections or spurs at SW and NE corners (see plan, Gillman 1892b, 234). Now stands to 4 storeys but was at least one floor higher; about 1864 SE corner blown up by 'vandals' (ibid.) so that most of E wall and E half of S wall no longer stand. At ground-floor level, N end of guard chamber survives in thickness of E wall, close to NE corner; indicating probability that tower was entered by door in centre of E wall, with spiral staircase rising in SE corner (no trace of either feature survives). There appears to have been mural chambers in E wall at 1st-, 2nd- and 3rd-floor levels, of which only N end-walls survive. Main ground-floor chamber (7.4m E-W; 5.4m N-S) lit by splayed window embrasures, covered by segmental vaults, in S and N walls, latter has single ogee-headed light. At 1st-floor level, doors in SW and NE corners of tower give access to corner projections. In plan the projections are brought forward (L c. 0.2m) at right angles from side walls of tower then taper (L c. 6.4m) towards a blunt point; projections stand to 1st-floor level and have inclined stone roofs. Each appears to be solid at ground-floor level, with a triangular chamber, covered by a segmental plank-centered vault, at 1st-floor level; these have four gun loops each: one in each corner covering side walls of tower and one mid-way along each side, looking outwards. At same level gun loops set into E end of N wall and W end of S wall of tower; loops penetrate wall at angle from corners of square-set, lintelled embrasures; asymmetrical external splays allow coverage of spur. Main 1st-floor chamber covered by rounded vault (axis E-W), SE corner of which is collapsed. Access to floors over vault not gained; window in Swall at 2nd-floor level has double ogee-headed light (mullion and jambs gone) and hood moulding. Fireplaces in N wall on 2nd and 3rd floors, higher one has vertically grooved jamb, otherwise surrounds gone. Four corbels in N wall, above 3rd-floor level, indicate former presence of at least one further floor. Similar projecting spurs exist at Carrignacurra (9467) which was built post 1570, and at Castle Hyde in North Cork, this latter described as 'scarcely finished in 1587' (Gillman ibid., 234). Gillman (ibid.) dates Mashanaglass to c. 1584, when ownership transferred to Mac Sweeneys (O Murchadha 1985, 291). He described well as having been 'three-walled, drystone structure (H 5ft; 2ft x 7ft) open to W but enclosed in a mound on the other three sides'; religious objects and personal mementoes were affixed to ash tree on W side; cups and containers in front. Believed to have cured infirm children; visited Easter Sunday, Palm Sunday and Whit Sunday. White pebbles found around well during excavation were identified by workmen as 'Hail Mary stones' (ibid.) deposited by pilgrims. Stone wheel-house survives. Site occupies artificially levelled platform on S side of steep-sided glen; an artificial causeway links this area to the mill site. Excavation revealed an hourglass-shaped 'elongated shallow pit lying almost north-south across the platform....the pit was 22ft 6in long, 3ft 9in wide at its northern end, 2 ft wide about midway along its length, and 5ft 9in wide at its southern end. It was 1ft 6in deep at its northern end, and 2ft deep at its southern end, and 19in deep in its central area' (ibid., 35). Fahy found that 'a 2in thick layer of charcoal covered its floor at the northern end and spread rather thinly over the remainder of the pit floor' (ibid.); some large stones were found scattered on its southern half. Fahy concluded that pit 'may have been the ruins of the flue of a grain drying kiln, the northen end of the pit accommodating the fire' (ibid.); it appeared that kiln was deliberately dismantled.
