Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009 - CO044-074: Kiln - lime, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CCO044-074----. This two-phase limekiln was excavated in advance of construction along the route of the N8 Rathcormac-Fermoy Bypass in 2003. This roughly circular limekiln, the majority of which was underground, produced evidence of two distinct phases of building and use: Phase I - an earlier, large, outer kiln and Phase II - a later smaller kiln built inside the earlier kiln. The walls of both kilns were roughly concentric along the E arc whereas the wall along the W arc was reused for the second phase of activity. A large pit (diam. 7.5m; D c. 4m), that had been dug into the natural subsoil, housed the initial Phase I kiln. This kiln (int. 5.9m N-S; 5.6m E-W) comprised a stone-built wall (max. T 0.6m) of sandstone which was generally two courses wide. The wall consisted of randomly coursed, highly vitrified, sandstone blocks and was battered outwards from the base. The wedge-shaped entrance and raking out area of the kiln, which narrowed towards the E, was located to the W of the kiln. This entrance was contemporary with the Phase I kiln as a number of flat paving stones were tightly bonded into the outer wall. A retaining wall was constructed at either side of the entrance to create a tunnel, only the foundations of these walls survived. The Phase II kiln consisted of the construction of a new inner wall and the subsequent raising of the floor level to meet the level of the entrance or stoking pit. A rubble core was filled in between the earlier and later kiln wall. The remains of a ledge within the earlier and later kiln and unburnt limestone blocks within the Phase II kiln confirmed the identification of both structures as flare kilns. No dateable artefactual remains were recovered form the excavation of the kilns and radiocarbon determinations produced very long date ranges from 1520-1950 for Phase I and 1640-1950 for Phase II. A field boundary, indicated on the 1842 OS 6-inch map, was constructed over the kiln after it had gone out of use. According to the excavator (Quinn 2006d, 101), the Phase II kiln would have provided a more efficient means of producing lime and an easier means of removing the end product from the structure. Another limekiln (CO044-075----) was located c. 3m to the E. According to Quinn (ibid., 73), there was no evidence to suggest that either kiln pre- or post-dates each other as there was no stratigraphic link between the two areas. It is also possible that they were contemporary. (Quinn 2006b, 70; 2006d) The above description is derived from 'The Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 5' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2009). Date of upload: 22 December 2009 - CO044-075: Kiln - lime, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CCO044-075----. This limekiln was excavated in advance of construction along the route of the N8 Rathcormac-Fermoy Bypass in 2003. This double keyhole-shaped kiln was orientated N-S with a central bowl or pit and an opening at either side. The stone-lined funnel-shaped bowl narrowed towards the base. The outward batter was supported by a large lintel at the N which also formed the roof to the flue or entrance. The flue passed underneath the pit and widened out into a stone-lined channel at either side of the circular structure. The base of the flue was lined with flagstones, with evidence of hard, trampled lime. According to the excavator (Quinn 2006d, 74), a large pit (4m N-S) at the N side of the kiln has been interpreted as a raking-out pit. A flagstone floor was constructed along the length of the structure, probably facilitating the process of raking out the lime from under the bowl. The excavated evidence may suggest that this is likely to have functioned as a small kiln with relatively small amounts of lime being produced here (ibid., 101). No dateable artefacts were recovered from this kiln. There is another limekiln (CO044-074----) c. 3m to the W. According to the excavator (ibid., 73), there was no evidence to suggest that either kiln pre- or post-dates each other as there was no stratigraphic link between the two areas. It is also possible that they were contemporary. (Quinn 2006b, 70; 2006d) The above description is derived from 'The Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Excavation in advance of the construction of the N8 Rathcormac-Fermoy Bypass in 2003 uncovered three circular pits (pit 1: diam. 1m; D 0.1m, pit 2: diam. 1.17m x 1.79m; D 0.1m, pit 3 1.28; D 0.05m). All three pits showed evidence of intense burning and their fills included layers of charcoal. According to the excavator (Cotter 2006g, 69), all three features are believed to have been charcoal production pits. Radiocarbon analysis of the charcoal in the pits returned a date of AD1420-1640. Another charcoal-making site (CO044-086----), which is probably of similar date, is situated c. 350m to the SSW. (Cotter 2006g, 69) The above description is derived from 'The Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 5' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2009). Excavation in advance of the construction of the N8 Rathcormac-Fermoy Bypass in 2003 uncovered four pits: one circular pit (diam. 1.2m; D 0.15m), an oval pit (1.75m x 0.57m; D 0.21m), a subcircular pit (1.2m x 0.88m; D 0.05m) and another circular pit (diam. 0.45m; D 0.07m). All the pits showed visible signs of burning and all contained varying amounts of charcoal. According to the excavator (Cotter 2005b, 12), the size and morphology of the smaller pit, and the intense burning at its base, suggests it may have been a bowl furnace, though no definite evidence of smelting was recovered. However, all of the pits were interpreted as charcoal production pits (ibid.). A number of post-holes were also excavated in the area, though these did not form any coherent pattern. A radiocarbon date of AD 1280-1420 cal. was returned from a charcoal sample taken from the lower fill of the first circular pit. (Cotter 2005b; 2006h, 69-70). The remains of a house were uncovered during an archaeological excavation and consisted of a shallow foundation trench, enclosing an area 15m E-W by c. 7.5m N-S. Also uncovered were the remains of a central hearth and a number of internal post-holes. One sherd of medieval pottery (13th-14th century), a whetstone and a decorated rotary quernstone were recovered from the house. It was located immediately south of a small kiln (CO044-075----). A similar house (CO044-092----) was discovered 28m to the N. (Quinn 2006a; 2006b) The above description is derived from 'The Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Monitoring along previously untested and unresolved locations on the route of the recently constructed N8 Rathcormac-Fermoy Bypass uncovered three potential pits on a rise, c. 130m to the SE of a fulacht fia (CO044-106----). The easternmost pit (max. L 1.15m; Wth 0.9m) was suboval in plan and was orientated NE-SW. Two potential fills were recorded on the pit's surface: the uppermost deposit comprised scorched, sandy clay and this overlay a dark, blackish-brown sandy clay containing moderate amounts of charcoal flecks. A second smaller pit (0.6m N-S x 0.4m E-W) which was subcircular in shape was situated 3.5m to the WSW. This pit contained two fills: a mid-brown sandy clay containing occasional charcoal flecks and small sub-angular stones and a basal fill of a dark-brown sandy clay with moderate amounts of charcoal flecks. Incised sherds of prehistoric pottery were detected on the surface of this feature. Analysis confirmed that the sherds represented a cordoned urn dating to the middle Bronze Age and typical of a type used in funerary contexts. However, according to the excavator (Dunne 2005, 7), the absence of cremated bone and the presence of carbonised matter on the sherds suggests that the urn was used in a domestic context. A third feature (1.75m E-W by 1.6m N-S) was located 4.5m to the WNW and comprised an irregularly shaped spread of charcoal-rich material. Excavation in advance of the construction of the N8 Rathcormac-Fermoy Bypass in 2003 uncovered an isolated pit from which a sherd of Late Bronze Age pottery was recovered. This circular pit (diam. 0.65m; D 0.26m) had a fill of dark brown sandy loam and was cut by an E-W linear ditch. According to the excavator (Cotter 2005b, 15), the pit may date to the Late Bronze Age, however, it could equally be later and the pottery could have become incorporated with the fill of the pit at any later period.
