O'Donoghue (1986) noted 'At the west side is Parknakilla - Pairc na Cille (field of the church) in which is the site of an ancient church'. There are no visible remains of any church here as the area has been quarried extensively. A souterrain (CO082-019001-) was noted in the quarry face in 1999. The above description is derived from 'The Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 5' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2009). Date of upload: 22 December 2009 - CO082-019001: Souterrain, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CCO082-019001-. In a quarry, in a field named 'Parknakilla' on the 1900-1901 OS 6-inch map. This souterrain is visible in section in the S face of the quarry. It consists of at least three stone-built chambers. Chamber 1 (min. L 1.8m; Wth 1m; H c. 0.4m) is orientated N-S and extends into the quarry face. Its W side is of drystone-walling and its E side comprises one upright slab and some loose stones. Its S end is blocked by one large stone but it is not clear if this is the end wall or a collapsed lintel. One large roof lintel remains in situ, covering the entire remains of the chamber. The lintel is c. 1m below present ground level. Chamber 2 lies to the E of chamber 1 and is orientated E-W along the quarry face but only two upright slabs (combined length 1.1m) of its N wall and two roof lintels are visible. Chamber 3 lies to the E of Chamber 2 and appears to be orientated NE-SW. Only two upright slabs, probably part of its E wall, are visible. Chambers 1 and 2 are partially filled with earth and gravel. The above description is derived from 'The Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 5' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2009). Roadside; on gentle W-facing slope, commanding extensive view to W and NW across River Lee. Roughly rectangular graveyard (max. L c. 60m NNW-SSE;max. Wth c. 50m ENE-WSW) enclosed by stone wall; entrance in S wall at W end. Raised arc of ringfort (CO082-021002-) at N end. Headstones within ringfort area date from 18th century, while those to S date from 19th century; uninscribed grave-markers found in both areas; still in use. Enclosing wall of S half clearly later than wall to N, indicating that S part of graveyard is an extension. Also in ringfort are fragmentary remains of C of I church (CO082-021004-) and site of earlier church (CO082-021005-) to S. Possible holy well (CO082-021003-) near NW corner of graveyard. Near NW corner of graveyard. Wall (H 0.8m; T 0.37m) of random rubble encloses rectangular area (2.4m E-W; 1.64m N-S) roofed with large thin slabs. Entrance (Wth 0.6m) at E end, with one step down into chamber. Interior full of funerary remains and rubbish; no water visible. Described by Brunicardi (1913, 44) as 'apparently a holy well ..... dried up or was filled in and the votive offerings of the pilgrims together with several skulls and bones are thrown into it'. Not now known locally as a holy well'. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 3: Mid Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1997). Near N end of graveyard (CO082-02101-); fragmentary remains of C of I parish church of Kilmichael, apparently built between 1700 and 1728, closed for worship in 1910 (Brunicardi 1913, 43-4). Brunicardi (ibid.) described the church as 'a rectangular building 40ft 8in x 24ft 6in, with a small porch in the west end....there are three Gothic windows on each of the side walls, and one in the east wall....the church is fully furnished inside but everything is in disorder and bears signs of decay'. Near N end of graveyard (CO082-021001-), to S of ruined C of I church (CO082-021004-). No visible surface trace of remains 'traced in the grass' by Brunicardi (1913, 44). This was remains of parish church of Kilmichael, which was in partial repair in 1615 but 'on the point of decay' in 1639 (ibid.); by 1700 described as 'built with stone and clay 50 feet long, towards the west, and which is divided by a wall.
