According to local information, partially levelled c. 1982. Circular area (51m E-W; 47.5m N-S) defined by earthen bank (int. H 1.3m; ext. H 1m) S->W, incorporated into field fence system with some stone facing on outer face; low rise (H 0.2m) elsewhere. Mature deciduous trees grow on bank. Bowman (1934, 267) describes site as double-ramparted (diam. c. 32yd), on D. O'Leary's land, with outer rampart 5 to 7ft H, inner rampart c. 7ft H from base of fosse and intervening fosse 19ft wide. To NE of graveyard (14754), in village of Cullen. Indicated on 1842 OS 6-inch map as cruciform church. This probably replaced a thatched chapel said to have been situated in the graveyard (Anon. 1984b, 102). Church named 'St James's Church' on 1904 OS 6-inch map. Account of church (ibid.) describes internal galleries, slate roof and mud floor. Replaced in 1907 by present Catholic Church which stands c. 450m to NE. On E side of Cullen village; St Laserian's well (14026) located outside NE angle. Rectangular graveyard (c. 65m N-S; c. 30m E-W) enclosed by stone wall; 1842 OS 6-inch map shows N boundary c. 35m to S of present line. According to Grove White (1905-25, vol. 3, 89), walls repaired with stones from 'Cullen Monastery' (14386). No longer used for burial; several early 19th-century headstones noted, the earliest dated 1800. According to local tradition, burial place of St Laterian; mass celebrated here on St Laterian's day (25 July). Stone (13931) at entrance known as 'Heart stone' and 'Cloch na gCursa (The Stone of the Rounds)' (Bowman 1934, 269); rounds start at stone when visiting nearby holy well. Graveyard contained thatched chapel which was replaced by cruciform church (14754), immediately NE of graveyard, used up until 1930s as hall when it was demolished (Anon. 1984b). In rough grazing, just outside NE angle of burial ground (14610). Well covered with low concrete structure; opening to E with gate. According to Broker (1937, 35), 'Hooded in 1904 by Rural District Council at the instance of Daniel O'Connor, poet and mason'. Rounds, starting at Saint's Stone (13931), occur on July 25th after mass in burial ground. Bowman (1934, 268) noted rounds on July 25th and Good Friday; also 'the "pattern"...held on the Sunday before July 25th'. Saint referred to locally as St Latiaran, a sister of Iníon Buí (see 13982) and Lasair (Ó Ríordáin 1986, 33). Grove White (1905-25, vol. 3, 89) noted mostly women attending well where all kinds of diseases were reputedly cured; he adds that there used to be a trout in the well'. Locally known as St Laterian's Stone and burial place. Rounds, starting at this stone, are made around nearby St Laserian's holy well (14026) on July 25 after mass in burial ground.
