Circular area (diam. 36m) defined by earthen bank (H 1.2m); shallow external fosse to NW. Bank stone-faced externally on NW side; entrance to S. According to Hartnett (1939, 81) 'this was a double-ramparted fort, but the outer bank is erased except at the NW where a later field fence curves along its line'. Discovered in 1755 and investigated by the Rev. Marmaduke Cox (Smith 1750, vol. 2, 409-10). Passage leading into fifteen, possibly seventeen, large chambers (H c. 1.5m); access to further chambers blocked by large stone. One chamber said to contain five hundred skeletons, another five, some of which were burnt; carved wood comb and comb-case also found. Rev. Cox (ibid.) noted that the souterrain was 'about 150 yards' from a 'Danish fort,' probably the ringfort (CO072-009---) to the E. Depicted on 1938 OS 6-inch map as roughly oval area (c. 50m NE-SW; c. 40m NW-SE) defined by hachured scarp W->SE and by field boundary elsewhere; by hachured scarp W->N on 1904 OS 6-inch map. In pasture, c. 75m to E of possible souterrain (CO072-008---). Circular area (diam. 43m) raised c. 0.7m above surrounding land level. Rev. M. Cox, writing in 1755 (Smith 1750, vol. 2, 410) referred to this as a 'Danish fort'. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork.
