Archaeological testing in 2002 and subsequent excavation in 2003 was carried out in advance of construction along the route of the N8 Rathcormac-Fermoy Bypass. Excavation revealed a segmented ditch-like feature, two shallow bowl hearths, stake- and post-holes, thirteen pits and numerous bowl-shaped pits. The ditch feature (L c. 200m; D c. 0.5m; Wth c. 0.6m) had steep sides and a flat base and tended to weave from side to side along a general N-S axis. It was divided into five sections with offset gaps of c. 0.5m in between. One such gap was identified as the entrance, the ditch terminals being offset with a gap of c. 2m between them. No independent dating for the segmented ditch was obtained but, according to the excavator (Linnane 2006, 44), its form would suggest a prehistoric context and in addition, slag from its fill would indicate a Bronze Age date at the earliest. All of the thirteen pits contained significant quantities of heat-fractured stone. One of the pits was radiocarbon dated to 1910 cal. BC while one of the post-holes produced a date of 1000 cal. BC. In addition, two shallow bowl hearths produced a radiocarbon date of AD 530 cal. Finds from the excavation included four flint flakes and possible rubbing and whetstones. One of the pits contained a stone spindle whorl. Two drying kilns (CO035-137----; CO035-138----) were situated within the area to the E of the ditch. (O'Connell and Linnane 2006, 72; Linnane 2005; 2006) The above description is derived from 'The Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 5' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2009). One of two corn-drying kilns (see CO035-138----) which were excavated along the route of the N8 Rathcormac-Fermoy Bypass in 2003. This figure-of-eight-shaped corn-drying kiln consisted of a pit (L c. 2.5m N-S; max. Wth c. 1.5m) which was divided into two areas: a shallow chamber (D c. 0.25m) to the N and a deeper chamber (D c. 0.6m) to the S. The sides of the pit itself were steep to the N but elsewhere sloped more gently to shallow U-shaped profiles. The base of the deeper chamber had been oxidised to a deep red by heat. One of the fills in this S chamber consisted of high concentrations of charcoal and very occasional fragments of burnt bone. Charcoal from this fill provided a radiocarbon date of cal. AD 350. Analysis of seeds obtained from the fills were predominantly barley. There was another kiln (CO035-138----) situated c. 44m to the NE. (O'Connell and Linnane 2006, 72; Linnane 2006) The above description is derived from 'The Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 5' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2009). Date of upload: 22 December 2009 - CO035-138: Kiln - corn-drying, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CCO035-138----. One of two corn-drying kilns (see CO035-137----) which were excavated along the route of the N8 Rathcormac-Fermoy Bypass in 2003. This figure-of-eight-shaped corn-drying kiln consisted of a pit (c. 2.3m E-W; max. Wth c. 1.2m), the waist of which divided it into two chambers: the W chamber (D c. 0.6m) and the E chamber (D c. 0.4m). The sides of both chambers sloped steeply to a flat base. The base of the W chamber had been oxidised to a deep red colour. Analysis of seeds obtained from the fills were predominantly barley. There was another corn-drying kiln (CO035-137----) situated c. 44m to the SW. According to the excavator (Linnane 2006, 44), despite their distance apart, both corn-drying kilns are considered to be closely contemporary because of their similarity of form and function. (O'Connell and Linnane 2006, 72; Linnane 2006) The above description is derived from 'The Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 5' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2009). Date of upload: 22 December 2009 - CO035-139: Excavation - miscellaneous, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CCO035-139----. Discovered in 2002 and subsequently excavated in 2003 in advance of the construction of the N8 Rathcormac-Fermoy Bypass. The excavation revealed ten pits and a burnt spread with associated stake- and post-holes. The pits varied in size and shape. Charcoal samples taken from three pits returned radiocarbon dates of 880-790 cal. BC, 1140-920 cal. BC and 1300-1030 cal. BC, respectively (Murphy 2006n, 35). The spread (0.48m x 0.6m; D 0.21m) was subrectangular in plan and consisted of a loose, medium-brown, silty sand with oxidised areas, occasional small stones and charcoal. Its association with four post-holes and one stake-hole suggested that it may have represented a hearth (Murphy 2006n, 73). (Murphy 2006g, 72-3; 2006n) The above description is derived from 'The Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 5' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2009). Date of upload: 22 December 2009 - CO035-140: Excavation - miscellaneous, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CCO035-140----. Discovered in 2002 during archaeological testing in advance of the construction of the N8 Rathcormac-Fermoy Bypass. Topsoil-stripping exposed two areas of archaeological potential, Trenches 1 and 2. Trench 1 produced seven cut features which included shallow pits and a truncated linear feature. Two of the features produced pottery of a possible Middle Bronze Age date. The adjacent Trench 2 produced 60 features, including shallow pits, stake-holes, post-holes and large pits with charcoal spreads and evidence of burning. The post-holes and pits were randomly positioned and did not appear to form part of any structure. One large pit contained numerous flint and chert artefacts that appeared to have been discarded. According to the excavator (Quinn 2006e, 50), it is likely that knapping took place on or near to this location. The presence of a possible hearth and a small possible windbreak may also be indicative of a work area, although no lithic material was recovered from the immediate vicinity. Quinn (ibid., 51) concludes that the overall evidence would appear to represent a small-scale flint/chert knapping site which dates to the Middle Bronze age. (Quinn 2006c; Murphy 2007) The above description is derived from 'The Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 5' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2009). Date of upload: 22 December 2009 - CO035-150: Field boundary, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CCO035-150----. Discovered in 2002 and subsequently excavated in 2003 in advance of the construction of the N8 Rathcormac-Fermoy bypass (Murphy 2006g, 72-3; 2006n). Excavation revealed two field boundary ditches which were orientated NW-SE and consisted of a compact dark-brown sandy silt with occasional stones. The first boundary ditch (Wth 2m; D 0.2m) had a flat base while the second one (Wth 1.2m; D 0.42m) had a rounded base. A number of excavated features (CO035-139----) in the immediate vicinity were also excavated. In the absence of dateable evidence for these field boundaries, it is considered that they probably post-1700 in date. (Murphy 2006g, 72-3; 2006n) Compiled by: Archaeological Survey Unit, UCC.
