Pochin Mould) shows site overgrown with three ranges in centre. Built by 1807 to house 100 men and mounted eight guns. (Kerrigan 1981, 5). Built on rock outcrop at NE end of Whiddy Island. SW side of tower house (10.7m NW-SE; 8.6m NE-SW) remains. SW wall survives to 2nd floor level; short return (0.6m) of SE wall at ground level; NW wall survives to ground-floor level. Remains of lintelled window ope and one side of doorway in NW wall. Three horizontal rows of joist holes, c. 1m above the other, on inner SW face; stone-lined guardrobe chute exposed at first-floor level. Base batter around external walls removed. Circular redoubt on high ground in middle of Whiddy Island; two similar redoubts (CO118-077---; CO105-032---) to SW and NE. Indicated on OS 6-inch map (1842) as 'Center Redoubt'. Defended by fosse (Wth 8.5m; D c. 10m) with outer circular glacis (Wth 40m). Parapet wall (Wth 4m; H 1.5m) around inner perimeter of fosse enclosing level circular (diam. 68m) area. Low arcs of gun placements visible along SW parapet wall. At centre, three rectangular ranges of single-storey barracks all barrel-vaulted, originally covered with hipped slate roofs. Central range (Wth 12.75m) wider than ranges (Wth 6.6m) on either side. Part of NE range used as private residence. Covered well with original iron pump to SE of central range. Freestanding circular-plan battery, built 1807. Now in ruins. Redoubt comprises circular-plan coursed rubble limestone ditch with coping stones. Iron bridge entrance (south). Freestanding circular-plan battery, built 1804, having military barracks, magazine and cast-iron water pump to interior. Now in ruins. Redoubt comprises circular-plan rubble stone lined ditch with parapet and accommodation for front-pivoted traversing carriages and banquette. Interior accessed by timber drawbridge with cast-iron railing, to north-east. Three structures to interior, two twelve-bay single-storey accommodation blocks to north-east and one nine-bay single-storey magazine to south-west. Hipped slate roofs, with rendered red brick chimneystacks to north-east accommodation block. Rubble stone and rendered walls with dressed quoins. Camber-headed openings with limestone sills and red brick block-and-start surrounds. Some openings blocked with red brick. Camber-headed door opening with timber battened doors and red brick block-and-start surrounds. Two-bay single-storey outbuilding to south-west having rubble stone walls and square-headed door openings.
