A large spread (25.8m E-W; 9.15m N-S) of heat-shattered stones and charcoal-enriched soil was discovered during topsoil stripping in advance of the construction of the Ballincollig-Ballineen gas pipeline and was excavated in 2000. Apart from a N-S field drain which cut across the spread, no other features were uncovered. A fragment of a lignite bracelet was found in the NE portion of the spread. The spread had been severely damaged during the topsoil stripping. Spring wells were noted to the N and S of the spread. A possible fulacht fia (CO109-091002-) lies 0.35m to the E. (Tobin 2001; 2002e, 53) The above description is derived from 'The Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 5' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2009). Date of upload: 22 December 2009 - CO109-091002: Fulacht fia, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CCO109-091002-. A spread (15.6m E-W; min. 4.35m N-S; max. D 0.6m) of heat-shattered stones and charcoal-enriched soil was discovered during topsoil stripping in advance of the construction of the Ballincollig-Ballineen gas pipeline and was excavated in 2000. The spread had been cut by field drains in several places and had also been severely damaged during the topsoil stripping. A subcircular feature (2.7m NW-SE; 1.65m NE-SW; max. D 0.5m) was uncovered 0.3m to the S of the main concentration of heat-shattered stones and charcoal-enriched soil. It was predominately filled with heat-shattered stones and charcoal-enriched soil and its base was lined with a thin layer of grey silt and charcoal. The excavator suggests that it is possibly the remains of a trough. Spring wells were noted to the N and S of the spread. A possible burnt mound (CO109-091001-) lies 0.35m to the W. (Tobin 2001; 2002e, 53) The above description is derived from 'The Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 5' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2009). Date of upload: 22 December 2009 - CO109-092: Fulacht fia, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CCO109-092----. In pasture, on a S-facing slope. A spread (15.2m E-W; 8m N-S; D 0.3m) of heat-shattered stones and charcoal-enriched soil was exposed during topsoil stripping in advance of the construction of the Ballincollig-Ballineen gas pipeline and was excavated in 2000. A spread of stones which was uncovered on the E side of the spread was interpreted as a dump of raw material for the water-heating process. A subrectangular/elliptical pit (2.54m E-W; 1.75m N-S; D 0.6m) was found towards the N edge of the spread. It had steep sides and a flat base and was predominantly filled with heat-shattered stones and charcoal-enriched soil. The base and sides of the pit were lined with combined layers of charcoal and a grey silt. The pit was interpreted as the trough of the fulacht fia, and was possibly lined with wicker or a wattle and clay mix. A parcel is the land of a title, not an address. The owner's name is in the Land Registry of Tailte Éireann: a copy of the folio can be ordered on landdirect.ie, for a fee; this site names no owner.
