Killanin and Duignan (1962; 1967), following Somerville (1929), claimed that there is a 'ruinous prehistoric chamber tomb' on Crockacashel in this townland. There is here, on the overgrown hillslope overlooking the E shore of Lough Swilly, a long and narrow oval pile of large stones c. 30m long and 12m wide. In the middle of this heap there is a cavity under a large block resting unevenly on two opposed blocks. Whatever the origin of this great heap of stones, the so-called chamber appears to be a fortuitous occurrence. This monument lies c. 4km NW of Buncrana and stands on level arable land c. 450m from Stragill Strand on the E side of Lough Swilly. There is an extensive outlook westward across the lough, but rising ground to the E restricts the view inland. Little of the structure now survives. At the E are four courtstones, two representing the inner end of its northern arm and the other two the inner end of the southern arm. Approximately 2m W of these there are two opposed orthostats, the last remains of the gallery. Beyond these is a large displaced slab. The surviving stones rise above the surface of a grass-grown, flat-topped, round mound that measures 9.5m E-W by 9.3m N-S. It is 0.7m high and has a well-defined, steep-faced perimeter. Stones gathered from the field have been dumped on it. The inner ends of the court are 1.2m apart. The inner one of the two stones of the northern arm is 0.95m high. It rises 0.6m above the top of the adjoining courtstone. The inner courtstone at the S is pitched outward and would stand 0.45m high if upright. It may also have served as an entrance jamb. The adjoining courtstone is 0.6m high. The surviving stone at the N side of the gallery is 0.35m high. The stone on the S side is 0.15m high. The displaced slab W of these is partly concealed. It measures 1.2m by at least 0.8m and is 0.25m thick. It may have served as backstone to the gallery. If so, a gallery length of c. 4m is indicated. Internal Dimensions 53m N-S, 37m E-W. A roughly triangular area around the summit of Crockacashel Hill enclosed by a much collapsed stone wall. The wall is barely perceptible on the W and S sides where there is a steep drop. The slope is less steep on the E side and here the wall spread is at its greatest. The wall at no point exceeds .75m in height. There is an external fosse on the NE side and what is possibly a roadway approaches the site from the NW. There is a cairn in the SE sector at the highest point of the interior, which seems to have been a trigonometrical station (Boyle-Somerville 1909, 232-3). The remainder of the interior is uneven and slopes from W to E. A small subcircular feature 5m × 2.5m consisting of a single course of stones abuts the internal side of the enclosing wall at the N. Four small circles of stones (DG029-017002-) about 3m in diameter were noticed to the E of the enclosure between it and the second summit on this hill (Boyle-Somerville, 1909, 233, recorded six of these circles). The hill rises directly from the rocky shore of Lough Swilly to the W. The above description was derived from the 'Archaeological Survey of County Donegal. Boyle-Somerville (1909, 232-233) recorded that ‘In the saddle between the two tops of the hill and close outside the wall of the cashel there are six small stone circles, each perfect or nearly so, but low, and composed of comparatively small stones, all untrimmed.’ Lacy (1983, 116, no. 707) noted four small circles of stones, about 3m in diameter, to the E of the cashel, between it and the second summit on this hill. Detached four-bay single-storey vernacular house, built c. 1860, having single-bay windbreak porch to the centre of the front elevation (east), ruinous and roofless two-bay single-storey extension to the north gable, added c. 1880, and with single-bay single-storey outbuilding attached to the south gable end. Now out of use. Pitched/domed thatched roof having ropes and wire mesh\chicken wire over secured on horizontal metal bar(s) below eaves level, and with two rendered chimneystacks and raised rendered verges to the gable ends (north and south). Whitewashed and limewashed rubble stone walls. Square-headed window openings with painted stone sills and two-over-two pane timber sliding sash windows. Square-headed door opening to front face of porch with replacement glazed timber door. Attached outbuilding to the south and attached extension to the north having collapsed pitched roofs (rendered rubble stone chimneystack to the north gable end of extension to the north), partially rendered rubble stone walls, and square-headed window and door openings (fittings now gone). Detached two-bay single-storey house to the north having pitched corrugated-metal roof with raised rendered verge and rendered chimneystack to the north gable end, rendered rubble stone walls, and square-headed openings. Vernacular gateway to the south of site having rubble stone gate-piers (on circular-plan) and wrought-iron flat-bar gate, now collapsed.
