Numerous bronze pins as well as a variety of stone tools have been found among the sandhills close to Ballyness Pier (UJA 1858, 351-3; Knowles 1901, 34.8; Brunicardi 1914, 195). The above description was derived from the 'Archaeological Survey of County Donegal. A description of the field antiquities of the County from the Mesolithic Period to the 17th century.' Compiled by: Brian Lacey with Eamon Cody, Claire Cotter, Judy Cuppage, Noel Dunne, Vincent Hurley, Celie O'Rahilly, Paul Walsh and Seán Ó Nualláin (Lifford: Donegal County Council, 1983). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated. Site visited and surveyed by Martin Byrne on the 30 April 2009. Remains are in soil profile towards base of sloping ground/ former sand dune; Public road to north and east leading to pier. Boundary fence on top of soil profile with access to lands to south to immediate east. Access to site is via a gate fronting onto road. Remains comprise a c. 200mm thick layer (as exposed) of mixed shells extending west for a distance of c. 1m; covered by a layer of sand (c. 100 - 150mm) over which is a layer of peaty soil (c. 300mm average thickness). Land slopes down to immediate north and east and there is a dispersed spread of shells extending over an area of c. 3m to front (north) of remains(pers. comm. M. Byrne 2009-). Castle Bawne (DG024-004----/DG024-004001-): The lands of Ballyness were granted to Henry Hart in 1611 (Hill 1877, 325). He subsequently sold them to Wybrant Olphert a Dutch protestant and in 1619, there were 'a stone fort, and house in it . . . . in which there is an English family' (Hill 1887, 524; Maguire, II, 1920, 280). In 1622, Olphert who was then resident in Derry is described as having repaired the 'old bawn in some parts . . . . which bawn lyeth waste' (Treadwell 1953-5, 43). In 1654-6, the lands were in the possession of his son (Simmington 1937, 114). The ruins of Castle Bawne are situated on a precipitous cliff ledge where the Tullaghobegly river enters the sea. The remains of this small rubble-built polygonal bawn comprise the ivy-covered N wall with doorway, the NE corner and fragmentary section of the E wall and the lower courses and underpinning of the S wall and SW corner; there is no visible trace of the W extent of the enclosure. The N wall, 3.15m in maximum height, has lost much of its lower facing. The lintelled doorway preserves the draw-bar hole and socket and has an interior hall-like feature, the walls of which are 2.5m high. The doorway had a lintelled rear-arch supported by a timber cross-beam. A section of a splayed ingoing W of the entrance may be the remains of a loop and stone steps incorporated in the thickness of the N wall gave access to the top of the hallway from the E. It is possible that this N wall formed the N limit of a house (DG024-004002-) at this end of the bawn; there is no visible trace, however, of any internal structure or wall. The underpinning of the E wall gives a slight batter to the exterior face. Immediately N of Castle Bawne the land has been scarped to accommodate two mill races. Located in the rural countryside to the west of An Fál Carrach [Falcarragh] along the N56 road to An Clochán Liath [Dunglow].
- Cé Bhaile an Easa [Ballyness Pier], pier/jetty, 1845–1900, Regional interest, registry number 40902416, https://www.buildingsofireland.ie/niah/search.jsp?type=record&county=DG&regno=40902416. Pier/jetty, erected c.1849 and extended by timber section to southwest end c.1898. Constructed of battered coursed squared rubble stone masonry with rubble sandstone wall to seaward/northwest side having cement coping. Flight of cut-stone steps inset to southwest end of pier. Concrete deck with concrete bollards to southwest verge of stone pier, cast-iron bollard to southwest end, and wrought-iron hoop restraints to southeast verge. Timber deck to later extension supported on cross-braced timber superstructure. Metal ladder to southeast elevation of pier stone wall and to southeast elevation and to southwest end of later timber section. Concrete slipway adjacent to southeast side of pier. Detached single-bay single-storey former coastguard boathouse adjacent to east, built c.1885, having remains of pitched natural slate roof with later felt covering, rendered rubble stone walls with cast-iron pattress-plate and wrought-iron tie-bar, camber-arch window opening to northwest side elevation with wrought-iron bars, and with segmental-headed carriage-arch opening to southwest gable end having battened timber double-leaf door. Rubble stone slipway to southwest of boathouse, with cement coping. Located north-west of An Fál Carrach [Falcarragh] jutting into Bá Bhaile an Easa [Ballyness Bay].
