The site is described as 'Burial Ground for Strangers found drowned' on the 3rd edition of the OS 6-inch map but the exact position is not indicated. A limited search in the general area revealed no trace of it. The area is one of extensive rock outcrop at the base of the Knockalla mountain range. The location point for this record has been positioned at the spot where the name is printed on the OS 25-inch plan (surveyed 1900) The above description was derived from the 'Archaeological Survey of County Donegal. A description of the field antiquities of the County from the Mesolithic Period to the 17th century.' Only a short arc of a circular stone wall survives here to the N of a modern field boundary. The wall which is grass-grown is .4m in height, and from 3m to 4m wide. Remains of facing can be seen on the interior. The interior is slightly lower than the ground outside. The diameter (presuming an originally circular enclo-sure) was probably c. 15m. It is located on level grazing land overlooking Lough Swilly closeby to the E. The above description was derived from the 'Archaeological Survey of County Donegal. ## Architectural heritage (National Inventory of Architectural Heritage)

- Knockalla Fort, martello tower, battery, 1805–1815, Regional interest, registry number 40901801, https://www.buildingsofireland.ie/niah/search.jsp?type=record&county=DG&regno=40901801. Detached two-storey ovoid-plan Martello tower, built c.1810, having pair of defensive walls flanking to north and west to seaward side and protected by dry moat to south (landward) side and probably incorporating fabric of mid-eighteenth-century battery. Vaulted ashlar gun mounts to roof, with conical ashlar stairs turret and remains of crenellated parapet. Stepped flanking walls with skewed rendered copings. Dressed rubble stone walls with tooled corner. Square-headed openings with musket loops to ground floor, having tooled ashlar lintels. Musket loops to east defensive wall flanking segmental-arch opening with tooled stone surround, raised stringer stone and keystone, and with steel gate inset. Red brick chimneystacks to parapet. Tower and walls enclose detached five-bay single-storey structure with flat roof, wet-dashed walls, timber windows to upper level and seven embrasures to parapet on lower level. Approached by sunken roadway having rubble stone walls and leading to south of dry moat opposite arched opening. Set overlooking An Poll Beag [The Little Hole], Poll Uí Bhaoid [Boyd's Hole] and Loch Súilí [Lough Swilly].
- Knockalla Coastguard Station, coastguard station, 1870–1890, Regional interest, registry number 40901840, https://www.buildingsofireland.ie/niah/search.jsp?type=record&county=DG&regno=40901840. Detached six-bay two-storey former coastguard station, built c.1880, having machicolation feature to front and gable elevations with window openings, and projecting single-storey porch extensions to rear (northwest). Hipped slate roof with projecting eaves having exposed timber rafters, three rendered chimneystacks, replacement aluminium rainwater goods, and lean-to slate roofs to extensions. Painted coursed rubble stone walls with margined tooled quoins and raised stone plinth. Machicolations supported on corbelled brackets and smooth-rendered. Mainly camber-arch window openings with painted tooled stone voussoirs and sills, with some square-headed window openings. Replacement uPVC doors and windows. Blocked camber-arch doorway and recently enlarged window openings towards one end of front elevation. Single-storey rubble stone outbuildings to rear, with pitched slate roofs having render copings. Stone walls to boundary to rear with square-plan stone piers supporting wrought-iron pedestrian gate. Set on hill overlooking overlooking Trá Screagaí [Scraggy Bay] and Loch Súilí [Lough Swilly].
