A large stone, uncovered when digging for a well. It is triangular in elevation, 1.47 × 1.16m × 1.1m, and 0.25m thick. There are 6 cup-marks, 2 with circles, one of which has a tail. It is situated now in the yard of a new bungalow, at the top of the cultivation level, on W sloping ground. The above description was derived from the 'Archaeological Survey of County Donegal. A description of the field antiquities of the County from the Mesolithic Period to the 17th century.' No trace seems to survive of the oval stone enclosure recorded in 1929. It was said to be 35 ft × 25 ft with a second enclosing 'ring of stones' at the SW side, 10 ft outside the inner wall of 'rough stones'. It was somewhat ruined at the N and S ends and the discov-erer believed it to be a burial site or a hut circle. The outer ring might suggest, however, a destroyed cashel. It was situated c. 700 yards below the summit on the E slope of Gollan Hill. The area is now (though possibly reclaimed) good pasture. (Boyle-Somerville 1929, 166). This monument is not shown on any edition of the as 6-inch maps. It stands on sloping pasture near the village of Fahan and c. 50m from the E shore of Lough Swilly. The sharply rising ground to the E of Fahan restricts the outlook in that direction. The megalithic remains at the site consist of four slabs: three in a line at the N, orientated NE-SW, and one at the S. These stones rise above the surface of a long grass-grown mound 12.3m long, 6.8m in maximum width and 1m high. Excavation would be required to determine how the orthostats relate to original ground level. The eastern of the three stones at the N side of the structure is 0.25m high, and the stone next to it is 0.5m high. The third stone here is 2.1m to the W of the last and is 0.7m high. The lone orthostat at the S is 0.5m high. There is a tree, shown on plan, 0.2m from its outer face. A smaller tree, close to the SW edge of the mound, is not shown. The nature of the remains is somewhat uncertain, but they may be those of a megalithic gallery at least 4m long and c. 1.3m wide, the northern side of which increased in height toward the W. It seems that the site was traditionally associated with St Mura, at least in the 19th century, when it appears to have served as a penitential station where an annual turas, or pattern, took place (Doherty 1891, 41-2). The rather neat outline of the mound might owe something to activity related to this aspect of the site. Doherty 1891, 41-2; SMR 1987, 38:11; Ó Nualláin 1989, 142; RMP 1995, 38:11. Described by Ó Muirgheasa in 1936 as 'St. Mura's Holy Well is at Fahan. A turus is made there on the 12th March, St. Mura's festival; it is called Turus Fathana. St. Mura died 645 A.D. His crozier is in the National Museum, Dublin, and his bell in the Wallace collection, London. The well and "station are contiguous to each other; the former close to the Lough Swilly Railway near St. John's, the residence of Mr. Olphert; D.L.; the latter is in a field belonging to the same gentleman, and adjoins his garden; both are easily distinguished. Many miracles are spoken of traditionally as the result of the pilgrimages, but the record of miracles mentioned by Colgan is lost. It should be mentioned that the Holy Well of Fahan owes its preservation at the present day to the large-hearted reverence of a native of Inishowen, a gentleman, who, by the way, does not share the religious belief of the pilgrims who crowd the spot; it was he who prevailed upon the engineers of the Lough Swilly Railway to respect the Holy Well in fixing the curvature of the line. Consequently, to the former owner of St. John's, Major Marshall, J.P., aided by the active intervention of the worthy and venerated parish priest of Fahan, the late Rev. Bernard M'Eldowney, we owe the saving of the well from destruction. Major Marshall caused an ornate brick covering to be built over the well; but the vandalism, which had formerly, as Colgan says, effaced the remains of antiquity from the place, was still sufficiently rampant to tear down even the arched covering; and the fallen debris remains a monument to the ' rabidness of their fury.' " A fine photograph of St. Mura's Well appears in the " Ulster Journal of Archaeology" for 1908 or 1909' (Ó Muirgheasa 1936, 156-7). (Ó Muirgheasa no. 89).
