Internal diam. c. 32m. 'Dunacludean'. A subcircular area formerly enclosed by a collapsed stone wall now only surviving in parts. A section of a second wall can be detected in the SW sector. A field fence skirts and trims the monument on the NE. A gap through the S could be an entrance but it would be impossible to say with certainty. A souterrain (DG107-106002-) is open in three places within the cashel. None of these appear to be the original entrance. A stone-built main passage runs E-W and opens into a large chamber slightly W of the cashel centre. Shorter subsidiary passages seem to run off to E and W at a point where the floor is 1.5m below ground level. NE and SW of the souterrain are two circular 'hut' foundations (DG107-016003-). No trace of the 'Park Fort' of the OS 6-inch maps now survives. Previous reports indicate that its internal diameter was about 50ft. It was situated in good rolling farmland. (O. Davies). The above description was derived from the 'Archaeological Survey of County Donegal. A description of the field antiquities of the County from the Mesolithic Period to the 17th century.' Compiled by: Brian Lacey with Eamon Cody, Claire Cotter, Judy Cuppage, Noel Dunne, Vincent Hurley, Celie O'Rahilly, Paul Walsh and Seán Ó Nualláin (Lifford: Donegal County Council, 1983). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated. Date of upload: 22 September 2008 Excavation Number : 96E289 Trial-trenching was carried out at the site of this development on 6 September 1996 in compliance with planning conditions set out by Donegal County Council. The development consisted of the construction of a private dwelling, driveway, septic rank and percolation area, located in Creevy townland, 2.5 miles north-west of the town of Ballyshannon, Co. Donegal. The site was located adjacent to an enclosure, marked on the first edition of the OS 6-inch map as 'Park Fort'. Located in a field of rough grazing with good views of the Atlantic Ocean, this enclosure had been levelled in the past, its outline now barely visible. The private dwelling was to be located 10m north-east of the site of the enclosure. That area of the development closest to the site was trenched using a JCB. The trench was excavated in three sections, totalling 47m in length, 0.9-lm in width and 0.6-lm in depth. The stratigraphy encountered consisted of topsoil, underlying disturbed subsoil, a rubbish fill and natural subsoil. The only archaeological evidence consisted of a small lens of burnt soil and charcoal, located 2m along the third section of the trench, within the subsoil. It measured 0.3m in length, 0.3m in width and less than 0.lm in thickness. Also recovered from the subsoil was a stray find of black-ware. Internal diam. 16m. An area of rock outcrop is enclosed by the remains of a stone wall surviving on the E and S to a height of .5m. It is probable that there was an external wall but evidence for this is slight and present only on the E side. There has been much robbing and collapse is scattered all over the site. The entrance to a stone-lined souterrain (DG107-018002-) survives in the W quadrant. The main passage seems to run E-W with two other passages running N-S. The cashel is situated on elevated ground overlooking Donegal Bay to the W and Erne Estuary to the S. The above description was derived from the 'Archaeological Survey of County Donegal. A description of the field antiquities of the County from the Mesolithic Period to the 17th century.' A subcircular space surrounded by an earthen bank at the junction of 3 field boundaries. These latter appear to have trimmed the bank especially to the S. The site is densely overgrown but the bank in the SW seems to survive to a height of c. 1.5m. It is situated on high ground above the Erne valley and Donegal Bay with very fine views. Internal diam. 15m. This site consists of a circular raised area surrounded by a fosse and an external bank. There are slight traces of an external fosse on the S side. At present there are two gaps in the bank, one in the W sector linked by a causeway to the interior. The latter is probably original. It is situated on high ground in hilly grazing land. Internal diam. c. 40m. A circular space enclosed by a large bank, 2m high from the interior, a fosse 8m to 10m wide and an outer smaller bank which only survives partially. The site is slightly damaged on its S side. It is situated on the crest of a ridge with excellent views over the surrounding good land. Internal diam. 9.6m. A level platform defined by a fosse, a bank, a second fosse and bank and an outer fosse. The earthen banks are all very low and the fosses very shallow. A causeway enters the enclosure from the E. The site is located on the shoulder of a ridge in rough pasture with good views and to the E of a fine ringfort (DG107-021). Internal diam. 15.5m. A subcircular space enclosed by a bank of earth and stone. The bank survives to a height of .5m in the N sector but is slightly higher in the S. A gap in the W may be the original entrance. There are very slight traces of a silted-up fosse particularly on the S side. The interior is very rough and uneven. Traces of foundations in the W sector could be remains of structures. It is situated on rough-grazing land N of the River Erne. Internal diam. (59 ft.). A small circular enclosure defined by a diverted field bank and a low bank of small stones. It is very disturbed and divided by a modern field fence. Davies noted a small gulley on the W side which he suggested to be a collapsed souterrain. Situated on a gently sloping ridge of fair pasture land. Internal diam. c. 38m. A badly destroyed multivallate circular enclosure marked 'Crawfords Fort' on OS 6-inch maps. Modern fences obscure its plan on the E and NE sides. The banks are badly worn away. Internally there are numerous ridges and hollows, some of which are probably modern but others may be the remains of internal structures. A rectangular depression in the W side seems to be a collapsed souterrain (DG107-036002-). It is situated on a shoulder of rising ground to the N of the Erne Estuary in rough pasture land. A rock-cut souterrain now largely filled in and inaccessible. There are two openings suggesting a minimum length of c. 12m. The SW opening may be modern. The opening at the NE end is at right angles to the passage and is flagstone roofed. The rest appears to be tunnelled through the rock.
