The name 'Dermot and Grania's Bed', intended to identify this monument on the OS 6-inch map, was mistakenly applied to a spot c. 100m to the W (see Appendix 2, No. 23). The tomb stands at the edge of a flat tract of heather-grown bog c. 4km NE of Falcarragh on the coastal strip between Ballyness Bay and Horn Head and overlooks lower ground to the S. Further to the S the mountains of NW Donegal form the skyline. The tomb, which lacks a court, consists of an unroofed gallery, c. 5m long, entered between a doubled pair of jambs, the remains of an antechamber, at the SE. It stands toward the SE end of a slight, heather-grown mound, 19.5m long and up to 0.5m high. A stone wall, running E-W, marks the N side of the mound, which narrows from c. 12m wide at the SE to c. 6m wide at the NW, where its outline is rather indefinite. A stone wall runs up to the N side of the front of the gallery. The outer two of the four jambs at the SE are both set transversely and stand 0.9m apart. The southern one is now 0.4m high. It is clear that a piece has been broken from the top of this stone. The northern jamb, a substantial stone, stands slightly forward of this. It is 1.1m high. A loose slab, 1m by 0.6m by 0.4m, lies against the inner face of the last. The inner jambs are 0.55m apart. The southern one is transversely set and stands 0.6m from the outer jamb at that side. The top of this too has been broken. The surviving part is 0.65m high. The northern jamb is a small stone. It is longitudinally set and measures 0.2m high. The top of this may also have been broken. The antechamber represented by the four jambs appears to have been c. 1m long. That part of the gallery beyond the antechamber is 4m long and c. 2m wide, narrowing to 1.25m at the back. Two orthostats survive on the northern side. That to the front is 1.05m high, and that to the back is 0.7m high. Two orthostats and a small stone form the southern side. The front orthostat on this side is 0.8m high. Between it and the adjacent jamb is a thin set stone, 0.3m high. The second orthostat on this side, skewed so as to narrow the back of the gallery, is 0.55m high. A fine gabled backstone closes the gallery. It is 1.3m high and rises 0.6-0.75m above the tops of the adjacent sidestones. The antechamber identifies the front of the gallery, which may have been divided into two small main chambers, but the possibility that a single long chamber existed here beyond the antechamber cannot be ruled out. OS documents of the mid-19th century indicate that this tomb was then in much the same condition as now. However, Fagan (1845-8) claimed that in addition to the existing gallery there were a number of 'disfigured' smaller graves in the mound and that nearby there were 'the ruins of other graves'. There is now no trace of any of these. A much-ruined arc of a cashel wall, measuring c. 25m survives on the E. The wall was built of large blocks contiguously placed on the inner and outer edge and was about 1.2m wide. A modern stone field wall crosses the cashel wall running N-S, either side of which there is a small gap. There is another gap, due to disturbance, close to the S end of the surviving arc. A heap of stones further to the S seems to be on the line of the cashel wall. The site is on a rise from which there are excellent views and good grazing. The 'Fort', marked on the 1st and 2nd editions of the OS 6-inch maps as a circular enclosure (diam. 25-30m), is no longer visible. It stood in low-lying, slightly wettish level land where good grazing is available. The above description was derived from the 'Archaeological Survey of County Donegal. A cairn marked on all three editions of the OS 6-inch map is now gone. It stood at the top of a gentle W facing slope in grazing land. The above description was derived from the 'Archaeological Survey of County Donegal. A description of the field antiquities of the County from the Mesolithic Period to the 17th century.' Compiled by: Brian Lacey with Eamon Cody, Claire Cotter, Judy Cuppage, Noel Dunne, Vincent Hurley, Celie O'Rahilly, Paul Walsh and Seán Ó Nualláin (Lifford: Donegal County Council, 1983). The monument lies 650m SW of the court tomb (Dg. 52) in the same townland and 1.1km SE of the extensive beach stretching eastward from Ballyness Bay. The site is at the end of a low ridge in pasture and overlooks an extensive level tract of farmland to the W. Muckish Mountain dominates the outlook to the S. The tomb is greatly ruined, and only the portal-stones, both aligned E-W, and the doorstone survive in situ. A dislodged roofstone leans against the portal-stones. A low stone, 0.15m outside the southern portal-stone, though upright, is not firmly set and is of uncertain status. The structure stands toward the northern end of a grass-grown mound measuring 4.8m N-S by 3.6m E-W and 0.2m high. The portal-stones are 0.5-0.6m apart. That to the N leans inward slightly, and its sloping top decreases in height from 1.2m at the E to 0.9m at the W. Its higher end rises 0.15m above the top of the southern portal-stone. This is 0.4m thick at the base and narrows toward the top. Its western end overlaps the doorstone, which, in turn, slightly overlaps the western end of the northern portal-stone. The doorstone, which leans slightly to the W, is 0.6m high, around half the height of the portal-stones. The stone outside the southern portal-stone is 0.75m long, 0.2m thick and 0.35m high. The top of this seems broken, and it may have been taller. The displaced roofstone measures 1.85m by 1.7m and is 0.25m thick. There are numerous small depressions, none greater than 0.06m in diameter and 0.02m deep, on the upper surface of this slab. Some of these are stepped in section and appear to be of natural origin. Descriptions of the monument in OS records from before 1850 show it to have been then much as it is now. The monument is clearly the remains of a small portal tomb chamber. The juxtaposition of the stones still in situ indicates that the chamber lay to the W of these and that the tomb thus faced uphill and to the E. The above description was published in the 'Survey of the Megalithic Tombs of Ireland. Volume VI, County Donegal.' Compiled by: Eamon Cody (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2002). Date of upload: 22 September 2008 Excavation licence number 02E0456 Testing was undertaken on 29 and 30 April 2002 at a proposed sand-and-gravel pit at Errarooey Beg, Falcarragh. The site is near a court tomb and two destroyed enclosures (SMR 25:17 and 25:19). The area, which measures c. 200m by 300m, consists of marshy ground with rock outcrops and gorse, crossed by the remains of several stone walls. Seventeen test-trenches, each 2m wide, with a total length of 780m, were opened across the site. Topsoil and sod overlay a layer of rounded natural cobbles, beneath which was boulder clay. Beneath this, iron pan was present in places. The lowest context was a bright yellow sand with gravel inclusions. Nothing of archaeological significance was uncovered.
