Internal diam. c. 22m. A circular platform surrounded by a fosse and an outer bank. Internally near the SW edge is a recumbent stone, probably a fallen standing stone 1.25m × 0.3m which gives the monument its name of “Flahertys Stone” (DG106-006002-). Macalister (1949, 120) claimed to have read the inscription 'Liatach' on this stone. The platform, known as 'Finner Rath', is largely natural being the top of a small hill. Modern field fences run through the site. It is situated in good land but close to sand dunes. Killanin and Duignan (1962; 1967) describe a site on Finner Hill, known as Flaherty's Stone', as a chambered cairn. It is a ringfort within which is a prostrate slab, possibly a fallen standing stone (DG106-006002-). A D-shaped graveyard (DG106-007001-) but without any evidence that the circle was originally completed. At the N end of enclosure, which is surrounded by a modern stone wall, is the remains of a church (DG106-008-). There was a chapel- of-ease here in 1600 (Leslie 1929, 197). The church was in use in 1835-6 (OS 6-inch map 1st edition) but had fallen into ruins by the middle of the 19th century (OS 6-inch map 2nd edition). Built of rubble with pinnings and some brick dressings, the surviving ivy-covered church ruins 16.1m by 5.35m internally represent a two period building. The earlier part is probably the W 11.9m of the church and is indicated by an exterior batter, c. 0.5m high on the N and S walls; the junction is clearly visible in the exterior face of the N wall. A gap in the corresponding position in the S wall, possibly the site of a window, was faced when the central section of the church was enclosed for burial by the insertion of two cross walls. The E gable with external plinth c. 10-15 cms high has a large central window with splayed ingoings and round-headed brick rear-arch; the small size of the brick is suggestive of a 17th century date for this addition. The N and S walls, c. 3.5m-4m high are featureless. The W section of the former has fallen away and there is a large gap in the W half of the latter. No trace of the NW corner remains and only the lower S section of the W gable with attached S return survives. The lower courses of a N wall of some other structure in line with that of the church, survive on the W. The site is located on level ground to the E of Finner Hill in good land a little inland from the sea. The above description was derived from the 'Archaeological Survey of County Donegal. The site is located on level ground to the E of Finner Hill in good land a little inland from the sea. - DG107-064: Ringfort - rath, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CDG107-064----. Internal diam. 35m. Marked 'Lisnaclontybane' on the OS 6-inch maps. The site consists of a circular space enclosed by a low earthen bank, worn away in places. Modern field fences run through the site. It is situated on a shoulder of a low ridge on the N bank of a small stream. The surrounding land is generally good but a little boggy close to the site. Marked as a 'burial ground' (DG107-078003-) on the OS 6-inch maps. This site was destroyed without record very recently. It was undoubtedly the remains of an important early ecclesiastical site. 'Substantial banks and the foundations of a church (DG107-078002-)' were visible. Oval in shape (DG107-078001-), it would appear to have been c. 130m long E-W and c. 90m N-S. The maps show that about three quarters of the enclosing element survived. Before destruction it was probably the best preserved site of a type which is very rare in Donegal. The remains of a cruciform passage tomb survive here. The end chamber, to the N, the western side chamber and part of the opposed eastern side chamber are exposed. The endchamber is c. 1.5m long internally and widens from lm at its outer end to 1.5m near the backstone. The western side chamber is c. lm long and 0.8m wide, and the eastern one appears to have been of similar size. Unauthorised digging at the site in 1955 uncovered burnt and unburnt bone (information from the late P.J. Hartnett, National Museum, Dublin). Hartnett noted a low round mound c. 18m in diameter around the structure. Herity (1974, 216) has suggested that a 'ruined cromleac' drawn by Wakeman (1878-82, 58) may be one and the same as a 'rude cist, 14 feet 6 inches [c. 4.4m] long by 6 feet [c. 1.8m] in breadth' noted by Wood-Martin (1887-8, 158-9; 1888, 161) and that the monument may have been a passage tomb (his Dg. 15). It now appears that the 'ruined cromleac' in Wakeman's drawing is the monument described here and that the 'rude cist' referred to by Wood-Martin is the unlocated court tomb (Dg. 57) in this townland. Wakeman 1878-82, 58 (sketch); Wakeman 1896, 299 ('The cromleac stands, isolated, at a considerable distance from the great carn' seems to refer); Borlase 1897, 238 ('The dolmen marked No. 1…') and sketch fig. 223 on p. 237; Lockwood 1901, 89 ('Another one, near the military wagon camp' seems to refer); Anon. 1956 (photograph); de Valera 1960, 71, fn. 224; Ó Nualláin 1968b, 23, no. 24; Herity 1974, 216, Dg. 16; Ó Nualláin 1983a, 37, no. 88; SMR 1987, 107:106 may refer; Ó Nualláin 1989, 128. Internal diam. 60m. A large circular space enclosed by an earthen bank, 1m to 2m in height and best preserved in the E section, a fosse and a very worn outer bank. It is situated on the shoulder of a low E-W ridge and commands fine views of the surrounding, good land. Oliver Davies reported traces of a field system, older than the present one, close to this site. The above description was derived from the 'Archaeological Survey of County Donegal.
