Depicted on the first edition of the OS 6-inch map as a 'fort'. An earthen mound 1.7m high and 16m in diameter at the base. It has been much interfered with and the rim-like perimeter is due to modern disturbance. It is believed to have been originally dome-shaped. It is located on a ridge of land c. 120m long by 25m wide, which is defined by a steep drop to the S, a steep slope to the E, a less marked slope to the W and a gentle slope to the N. There are possible indications of a slight bank at the E end of the ridge. There are traces of a possible fosse around the base of the mound and 2m to the E is a curving earthen bank running 17m N-S across the ridge. The bank is c. 2.5m wide and averages .5m in height. About 2m W of the mound is a similar bank running c. 25m in a straight line across the ridge. It is c. 2m wide, .5m high and has a slight fosse on each side. There are two gaps, one c. 1m wide at the mid point and another 2m wide at the N end. A local informant said that this bank formerly ran all around the mound but it is difficult to see where it could have been placed on the N and S sides. From the point where the W bank meets the N side of the ridge, the sloping edge has been scarped for a distance of c. 40m to W and c. 30m to E. About 5m from the W end of this scarp there is a 10m wide gap, formed by inturning the scarp and retaining the natural slope, presumably an entrance. The site is located on good pasture in a commanding position overlooking a pass through the hills running SW to Mulroy Bay. It is difficult to be certain of the nature of this site. In some ways, it resembles a motte-and-bailey. The top of the mound, standing on the ridge, would be 3.5m above the adjacent land. The 2nd edition of the OS 6-inch map seems to show a single-ringed enclosure here but it may simply be a representation of the steep-sided, flat-topped hill, subcircular on top, and measuring c. 18m N-S and c. 16m E-W. A short stretch of bank c. 0.5m high on the SE and a 10m stretch .3m high on the NW may be the remains of an enclosure which would thus have had an internal diameter of c. 12m. The hill which itself consists of rough pasture is surrounded by wettish land. The above description was derived from the 'Archaeological Survey of County Donegal. This monument is in a broad flat-bottomed valley 40m W of the Burnside River and 1.8km E of Mulroy Bay. It stands on rough pasture broken by outcropping rock. Rocky hills and ridges restrict the outlook except toward the N. The tomb consists of a well-preserved chamber, c. 1.3m wide and originally 2-3m long. Entry, at the S, is between two tall longitudinally set portal-stones standing 0.7m apart at their outer ends. Single stones form the E and W sides of the chamber, the eastern one now dislodged. A tall gabled stone closes the back of the chamber, which is roofed by a single massive slab. The eastern portal-stone is 2m high. The top of this stone slopes downward slightly toward the backstone.The western one, the top of which slopes quite sharply down toward the backstone, is also 2m high. It rises c. 0.8m above the adjacent sidestone. This sidestone, though apparently well set, leans inward against the portal-stone and backstone. It is 1.1m high. The eastern sidestone is supported in a leaning position across the inner half of the chamber. Its top rests against the inner faces of both the western portal-stone and the western sidestone and against the eastern edge of the backstone. It is 0.35m thick and when in place would have been c. 1.8m long and 1.5m high. The backstone is 1.6m high and rises 0.45m above the top of the western sidestone. The sloping roofstone is 3.5m long, 2m wide at the front, narrowing to 1.6m at the back, and 0.45m thick. Now somewhat displaced, it rests on the portal-stones and on the displaced sidestone. Outside the southern end of the western sidestone is a low stone (not on plan) 0.5m long, 0.15m thick and 0.2m high. It does not appear to have served any structural function. The chamber interior has been deeply dug, as has the ground immediately in front of it. A sketch in an OS Memoir (1834), captioned 'Cromlech near roads in Gortnavern', seems to be an unfinished drawing of this tomb. Internal diam. c. 18m. A circular area enclosed by a ruined stone wall. A modern field wall is built on the inside edge of the original wall. The outer edge is still traceable. The original width was at least 2m. Three small 'compartments' have been built in the wall-collapse on the E side. The site is located on heathery bog on a slight rise at the NW extremity of a plateau. There is a stream 30m to the W and better land to the N and W. ## Architectural heritage (National Inventory of Architectural Heritage)

Three-bay single-storey vernacular house with attic, built c.1850 and refurbished c.2005, having recent lower, two-bay single-storey extension to south end, and three outbuildings adjacent to east. Pitched reed thatched roof with rendered copings and having rendered stone corbels at eaves. Chimneystacks to gables with copings and black pots. Painted cement-rendered walls. Square-headed openings with replacement two-over-two pane timber sliding sash windows to front, timber casement attic window just below eaves over doorway, and replacement uPVC elsewhere, with painted concrete sills, and having recent replacement timber door. Extension has exposed rafter ends, fibre-cement roof tiles and concrete copings. House and outbuildings arranged around courtyard surrounded by trees, approached uphill along narrow laneway. Three-bay single-storey outbuilding to north has lean-to at west, pitched corrugated-metal roof with concrete copings, limewashed rubble walls and recent timber doors. Similar two-bay building adjacent, with part-slate/part-corrugated-metal roof. Similar one-bay hay shed at right angles, with limewashed rubble walls and corrugated-metal roof, open-fronted to half of west elevation, and partly rebuilt rear (east) wall. Wrought-iron gate leads to rear of outbuildings.
