Located in a boggy, pasture field which is crossed by several drains. To the north the ground rises to a ridge with frequent rock out-cropping. The N56 borders the S side of the field. This burnt spread was discovered in 2021 during archaeological testing of a proposed topsoil storage area for a road scheme on the N56 Leitirmacaward to Glenties (Kilraine) approved road (Ministerial Direction No.: A065, extension to Registration No.: E005316) (Quinn 2021). The burnt spread underlay a layer of peat (D 0.9m). It consists of a sub-circular layer (diam. c. 4m; max. D 0.15m) of charcoal enriched clay, with mottling and staining extending over a larger area (diam. c. 5.5m). It may represent the result of early land clearance. The layer was not excavated, but was covered in geotextile and backfilled, and will be excluded from the proposed development at this location. (Quinn 2021) Attached image is courtesy of B. - DG065-020: Fulacht fia, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CDG065-020----. Located at the base of a NW−SE aligned valley, flanked by steep hillsides. This fulacht fia was discovered in 2018 during archaeological testing (License number: E005040 registration number E5014) and was fully excavated in 2019 in advance of the proposed N56 Letterilly to Glenties (Kilraine) Road Scheme (Hull 2019). The fulacht fia was sealed by a thick peat layer (D c. 1m) and overlay underlay peat (D 0.4m). It consisted of a mound (6.1m by 4.9m; H 0.38m deep) of burnt stone and charcoal, with an associated timber trough underlying the E edge of the mound. The subrectangular trough (L 1.8m; Wth 1.13m; D 0.1m) was built on a roughly laid brushwood surface, and was lined with split timbers and roundwoods, mostly alder and hazel. Cut marks on the timbers indicated the use of adzes and sharp metal axes. Moss was packed below and between the timbers. The moss was derived from a woodland environment, and bramble seeds, alder and yew buds found within the moss suggest a late summer/early autumn construction of the trough. Analysis of the charcoal fragments from the mound indicates that oak was frequently used as fuel, as well as holly, fruitwood and willow. Internal diam. 20.7m N-S, 19.5m E-W. A subcircular area enclosed by a largely destroyed stone wall. The interior is uneven with evidence of cultivation. Rock outcrop was incorporated in the cashel wall. The site is located on a knoll of limestone in an area of rough pasture with much rock outcrop. Detached four-bay single-storey vernacular house, built c.1900, with taller flat-roof extension to rear. Pitched straw-thatched roof with mesh over and roped to iron rods secured to eaves, and having three rendered chimneystacks. Lime-rendered and painted walls, with painted surround and plinths to doorway. Square-headed openings with painted reveals, replacement uPVC windows and concrete sills, and replacement timber door. Single-storey outbuilding to southeast with lean-to corrugated-iron roof and painted rubble walls.
