The monument is on the W side of the Inishowen peninsula, c. 1km from the shore of Lough Swilly on a low flat-topped ridge, and is aligned NE-SW. The land in the vicinity, poorly drained and bog grown, provides rough grazing. There are good views from the site, particularly to the SW across Lough Swilly, though limited to the NE by Aghaweel Hill c. 1.2km away and to the E by the less imposing Liafin Hill. The monument consists of, at the NE, the remains of a gallery c. 6m long, now divided into two chambers. Approximately 26m to the SW there is a ruined subsidiary chamber, and a further 12m to the SW is another, both opening to the SE. These three elements seem to have stood in a long narrow mound that is now only intermittently traceable in the uneven, boggy surface. Reliable survey of its outline is not possible, but it seems to have been c. 15m broad. There appears to have been considerable clearance of cairn material from the site since the middle of the 19th century, when, it is reported, there was 'a vast quantity of loose stones of various dimensions lying in a confused mass' between the main gallery and the south-western subsidiary chambers (OS Revision Name Book, 1846-7). Today there is only a light scatter of loose stones in this area. The main gallery opens to the NE. The front chamber is represented by a single orthostat at its southern side. This is a split stone set with its flat face to the interior. It is 0.8m high. It does not seem to be deeply set in the ground and leans inward against a segmenting jamb at its inner end. This longitudinally set jamb is the same height as the sidestone. At the inner face of this jamb is an upright stone, 0.2m high. The status of this stone is uncertain. Opposite the jamb is an orthostat lm in exposed height. This too may be a jamb. A prostrate stone measuring 1.lm by 0.7m lies 2.6m to the NE of this. A thorn bush grows in the rear chamber, the southern side of which is formed by two stones. The outer stone, set more or less in line with the segmenting jamb, is 0.6m in exposed height. Its top is 0.4m below that of the jamb. The inner sidestone here, set outside the line of the outer, does not seem to be deeply set in the ground. It has a flat inner face and is 0.8m high. A tall gabled orthostat, 1.7m high, forms the back of the gallery. This chamber was c. 3m long and was probably c. 1.5m wide. The gallery was rather better preserved in 1846-7 (OS Revision Name Book), when five 'flag stones' were present on the S side and four on the N. It was then 26 feet (c. 8m) long, which suggests that the gallery may have consisted of more than the two chambers now known. Only two stones of the eastern subsidiary chamber survive. One of these, a sidestone at the SW, leans markedly to the E. If upright, it would stand 1m high. There is a gable-shaped backstone at right angles to the N end of this. It leans southward and partly overlies but does not touch the sidestone. This, if upright, would stand 0.7m high. The western subsidiary chamber is rather better preserved. It is c. 2m long and almost 1m wide. Two sidestones and a backstone survive. The backstone, low and flat topped, is 0.25m high. The sidestone to the E leans against the backstone and rises 0.35m above it. The sidestone to the W is set in front of the backstone. Its inner end is around the same height as the backstone, from where it rises toward the front of the chamber, where it is 0.55m high. According to local information, this chamber was damaged at around the beginning of the 20th century. Approximately 3.5m to the W of the chamber is a leaning stone 0.6m long, c. 0.3m thick and, if upright, lm high. It is unclear whether it is a structural stone. Almost lm to the W is a displaced stone measuring 0.7m in maximum dimension. There is no trace of the 'erect stones' marked on the 1st edition of the OS 6-inch map. Situated on rough ground sloping SW towards Lough Swilly. Excavation licence number 00E0646 A one-day site assessment was carried out in the area of a proposed house site at Liafin, Linsfort, Co. Donegal, in order to fulfil the requirements of an outline planning application to erect a dwelling and septic tank. The archaeological site that prompted this assessment, standing stone SMR 19:15, no longer appears to exist at its recorded location. However, two 'new' standing stones had been located in the field on the opposite side of the road to the development site during a previous site assessment. Three test-trenches were opened within the area of development—Trenches 1 and 2 within the footings of the building, and Trench 3 along the length of the proposed access road to the dwelling. Trench 1 was placed along the length of the proposed building and was located 26m from the west field boundary and 8m from the north field boundary. The trench, which was 20m long, c. 2m wide and orientated north-south, was excavated with the aid of a machine fitted with a toothless bucket. The topsoil (a grey/dark brown, loamy, silty clay that ranged in depth from 0.2m to 0.26m) was removed to uncover the underlying subsoil—an orange/white, soft, sandy, silt boulder clay. No archaeological activity was located during this work. Trench 2 was placed along the width of the proposed building, at right angles to Trench 1, approximately central to the first trench. This trench was c. 2m wide and 10m long. Again the topsoil was stripped to uncover the underlying subsoil. No archaeological activity was uncovered within this trench. Trench 3 was placed along the length of the proposed access road to the dwelling and was located c. 8m to the south of Trench 2 and 13m to the west of Trench 1. The area opened up was c. 2m wide and 15m long. Again the topsoil was removed to uncover the underlying subsoil, and nothing of archaeological significance was located within this trench. (Excavations Bulletin 2000) Ciara McManus, ADS, Unit 48, Westlink Enterprise Centre, 30-50 Distillery Street, Belfast. Pre-development testing was undertaken by Aaron Johnston, for Archaeological Development Services Ltd, under licence No. 08E0543 across the site proposed for the construction of a dwelling house with wastewater treatment plant and access road. The site of development is located partly within the constraint rings of a megalithic tomb (DG019–014----) and a standing stone (DG019–015----). A desk-based assessment undertaken in 2000 concluded that the standing stone was no longer in situ. However, two previously unrecorded standing stones located a short distance across the road to the south-west are likely to be the remains of this monument. A test excavation conducted later in the same year by Ciara MacManus (ADS) revealed no archaeological features or artefacts within the site proposed for construction of the house (Excavations 2000, No. 184, 00E0646). The plan of development was amended several years later which involved relocating the proposed dwelling house a short distance to the north of the site planned initially. The relocation of the proposed dwelling house was therefore subject to a planning condition by Donegal County Council to carry out a further phase of testing. This was carried out on 14 August 2008. Four transecting trenches were excavated, which measured between 25–60m in length. They were excavated across the site of the proposed house, septic tank and driveway. No archaeological features or artefacts of any kind were exposed during testing. The above description was derived from the 'Archaeological Survey of County Donegal. Date of upload: 22 September 2008 No archaeological significance NGR 23279 43719 Excavation Licence No. 05E0608 Pre-development testing was carried out on 7 June 2005 at a site in advance of its development at Liafin townland, Buncrana, Co. Donegal. The proposed development, the construction of a single-storey dwelling with septic tank, was located within the constraint area for a standing stone. The monument was 14m from the proposed access road/driveway and 50m away from the proposed dwelling. Three trenches were excavated along the access road/driveway and through the proposed dwelling, septic tank and percolation area. The trenches measured 150m, 14.7m and 16.1m long, 1.5-1.8m wide and 0.1-0.6m deep. Below the topsoil were orange/grey/brown plastic sandy clay, orange/brown plastic silty clay and orange/brown friable silt loam. The three types of natural subsoil were sterile. The testing exposed two land drains and crossed a backfilled test-pit. One sherd of modern pottery was recovered from the topsoil. The testing revealed nothing of archaeological significance (Excavations Bulletin 2005). Richard Crumlish, 4 Lecka Grove, Castlebar Road, Ballinrobe, Co. Described by Ciara McManus as 'Concealed almost entirely by a thick garden hedge 1m W of the roadside, two large stones stand next to each other both aligned with their long axis in an E-W direction. The stone to the N is the larger of the two, though approximately 0.1m less in height than its S partner (exact measurements are impossible due to the thickness of the hedge). It is a large lichen-covered block standing stone 1.2m in height and measures 1.1m long and about 0.4m in breadth. The full height of both stones is lessened on the E side by build-up on the verge of the road, though to the W, in the base of the hedge, their full height can be seen as the garden is about 0.4m lower. The S stone stands 1.3m high and is a fine slab, approximately 0.3m thick and 1m in length. It is leaning slightly from its original position and and now rests against the top of the other though originally, if upright, as measured at the base of the stones, it would have been no more than 0.2m from the other. On present evidence, the stones do not appear to be the remains of any larger monument, such as a megalithic tomb and can only be classfieid at this time as a pair of standing stones' (Unpublished excavation report no. 00E646).
