Until about 1880 there used to be a big station there every year on the 29th June with "cars and carts from every art". "A horse and cart would not draw all the crutches that were at it then" (local tradition). Stations are still performed there, but not to the same extent as formerly. In the NW corner of a field of rush-grown pasture, on the N outskirts of Mountcharles village, located on the S-facing slope of a ridge, overlooking Donegal Bay to SE. A discrete length of field boundary (L c. 40m), on a roughly N−S axis, is evident as a moss-covered stone and earth bank (Wth 1-1.2m; H 0.2-0.4m). It is not shown on any edition of the OS 6-inch maps. The remains are low and poorly preserved, and its full original extent is unknown: at its N end it peters out close to the N boundary of the field -this section is partly concealed by a thicket of brambles; towards its S end it arcs gently to SW and also peters out. A few large stones or boulders lie close to, but not directly on the line of the field boundary. These appear to be field clearance stones dumped against the field boundary. The surrounding ground surface in the field is uneven and undulating. The southern section of the field boundary differs significantly in character. It consists of a row (L c. 10m) of 10-12 large stones and boulders, set between 0.2-0.6m apart. The majority of stones in the row are roughly square or rectangular blocks of stones (max. L c. 1m N-S; Wth c. 0.3-0.45m E−W; H 0.3-0.6m), relatively low in height; the stones at the N end of the row are lowest and merge with the main body of the earth and stone field boundary. However, three stones, more or less in the centre of the row, are conspicuously tall and upright. The three tall uprights (c. 0.5 by 0.6m; H 1.2-1.45m) are rectangular in basal cross-section, but have sharply angular sides that tapers towards a pointed apex, giving each a roughly triangular appearance. They are not contiguous at their bases, but the most northerly of the three tilts to S and leans against the middle stone, and the middle stone leans against the most southerly of the three. They stand firmly and solidly, but nevertheless do not appear to be deeply set in the ground. The date of the field boundary as a whole is unknown. The significance of the row of stones -and of the three tall stones, in particular - is uncertain. Some of the large stones may be later additions to the field boundary, but it is also possible the row of stones is part of an earlier wall or structure that was incorporated into the earth and stone boundary. Original two separate buildings, now amalgamated into single property. Pitched artificial slate (fibre cement) having three smooth rendered chimneystacks (one to either gable end and one offset to the south-east side of centre at junction of original two buildings). Smooth rendered and smooth rendered ruled-and-lined walls. Square headed window openings with painted stone sills and with six-over-six pane timber sliding sash windows at first floor level and with single eight-over-eight pane hornless timber sash window at ground floor level. Square-headed window openings to shopfronts having timber fixed-pane display window to shopfront to the north-east and replacement window to modern shopfront to the south-east. Two square-headed door openings with replacement timber and replacement timber panelled door. Traditional timber shopfront to the north-east comprising timber pilasters with capital detail supporting plain timber fascia over. Original square-headed doorway to shopfront now infilled. Modern shopfront to the south-east end of front elevation having simple painted fascia panel and plastic sign. Attached end-of-terrace three-bay three-storey rendered house, built c. 1840, having extension to the rear. Possibly in use as an R.I.C. barracks c. 1860 and possibly later in use as a hotel. Altered c. 1900; now out of use. Pitched artificial slate roof (fibre cement) with metal rooflights to front pitch (north-east) and having smooth rendered chimneystacks to either gable end (north-west and south-east) with stepped stringcourses. Wrought-iron brackets to eaves supporting replacement rainwater goods; some remaining cast-iron downpipes. Smooth rendered walls over projecting smooth rendered plinth, and have render block-and-start quoins to the corners at either end. Square-headed window openings with moulded architrave surrounds with keystone detail, six-over-six pane horned timber sliding sash windows with margin glazing pattern, and with continuous sill courses at first and second floor level. Decorative fielded lozenge/diamond motifs to keystones of window surrounds at ground floor level; paired window openings to the north-west side of doorway at ground floor level. Square-headed door opening having moulded architrave surround with keystone having fielded lozenge/diamond motif, plinth blocks, replacement timber door, and plain overlight. Road-fronted to the south-east of the centre of Mountcharles. Attached corner-sited three-bay two-storey house over basement level to rear (south-west), built c. 1860. Extended to rear c. 1910. Formerly in use as a surgery. Pitched natural slate roof with clay ridge tiles, cast-iron rainwater goods and having smooth rendered chimneystacks to either end. Raised rendered verge to the north-west end. Smooth rendered ruled-and-lined walls with render V-jointed block-and-start quoins to the corners. Slighted battered to base at the south-east corner. Square-headed window openings having rendered architrave surrounds with keystone details, one-over-one pane horned timber sliding sash windows, and having cut sandstone sills. Central square-headed door opening to main elevation (north-east) with rendered architrave surround having keystone detail, timber panelled door with raised and fielded panels, decorative brass door furniture, plinth blocks to base, and large plain overlight. Sandstone threshold. Road-fronted to the south-east of Mountcharles town centre with footpath to front. Laneway to the south-east giving access to rear. Gateway to yard to rear having a pair of rubble stone gate piers (on square-plan) and a pair of replacement wrought-iron flat bar gates. Smooth rendered walls over projecting rendered plinth, and having rock-faced painted sandstone block-and-start surrounds to the corners. Remains of rendered base to pilasters of former shop front to north-west side of ground floor level; chamfered corner with stop-chamfer to rear of north-west side elevation. Square-headed window openings having two-over-two pane timber sliding sash windows, stone sills, and with rock-faced block-and-start sandstone surrounds to the first floor openings and raised block-and-start surrounds at ground floor window opening to south-east having raised and fielded lozenge/diamond keystone motif. Square-headed window opening to former shop/office having modern timber casement window. Central square-headed entrance door opening having timber panelled door with bolection mouldings, plinth blocks to base, raised block-and-start surround with raised and fielded lozenge/diamond keystone motif and plain overlight. Decorative head mouldings/corbels over doorway. Road-fronted to the south-east of Mountcharles town centre. Laneway to the north-west giving access to rear. Smooth rendered walls over projecting rendered plinth, and having rock-faced painted sandstone block-and-start surrounds to the corner at the south-east. Square-headed window openings having two-over-two pane timber sliding sash windows, stone sills, and with rock-faced lintel and brick (?) block-and-start sandstone surrounds to the first floor openings and raised block-and-start surrounds at ground floor window opening to south-east having raised and fielded lozenge/diamond keystone motif. Square-headed entrance door opening having replacement timber panelled door, plinth blocks to base, raised block-and-start surround with raised and fielded lozenge/diamond keystone motif and plain overlight. Road-fronted to the south-east of Mountcharles town centre. Located on sloping site. Freestanding cast-iron water hydrant, erected c. 1910, now partially buried, comprising fluted shaft with lion's head motif to spout, surmounted by fluted domed capping with acorn finial over. Now disused. Original pull lever now missing. Freestanding gable-fronted double-height Catholic church, built c. 1904, comprising five-bay nave, polygonal apse to the west/south-west, and with gable-fronted single-bay entrance porch to the centre of the entrance gable (north-east). Modern sacristy extension with modern gable-fronted porch to the west end of the north-west elevation of nave, built c. 2005. Pitched natural slate roof to main body of building having raised cut stone coping to gable ends with moulded cut sandstone kneeler stones at eaves level, projecting cut sandstone corbelled eaves course, cast-iron rainwater goods, and with cut stone Celtic cross finials to gable apexes. Hipped natural slate roof over apse with projecting cut sandstone corbelled eaves course. Pitched natural slate roof to porch with raised cut stone coping to gable end, projecting cut sandstone eaves course, and having cut stone Celtic cross finial to gable apex. Squared coursed rock-faced Mountcharles sandstone walls over projecting cut sandstone plinth course, and having rock-faced block-and-start quoins to the corners with dressed margins. Pointed-arched window openings with chamfered ashlar and/or rock-faced sandstone block-and-start surrounds, chamfered sills and leaded coloured glass windows. Octofoil rose window to entrance gable, over porch, having ashlar sandstone surround, ashlar sandstone plate tracery, and leaded coloured glass; trefoil motif over to gable apex having cut sandstone surround and metal vent. Pointed-arched statue niche to front face of entrance porch (north-east) having ashlar sandstone surround, cut stone hoodmoulding over, and with moulded sandstone pedestal supporting statue over. Square-headed door opening to the north face of entrance porch having chamfered ashlar sandstone reveals with shouldered cut sandstone lintel over, and with replacement battened timber double-doors. Modern entrance porch to the east side of modern extension to the north-west, mirroring design of entrance to original porch. Open timber quadrant braced roof to interior having pierced quatrefoil motifs, render ribs to chancel ceiling, carved marble altar goods (dated 1897), gallery over entrance to the east/north-east supported on cast-iron columns and having carved timber balustrade with trefoil-headed inset panels. Gallery reached by flight of timber stairs to the south-east of nave. Set back from road in extensive site to the south/south-west of Mountcharles town centre. Graveyard with twentieth century gravemarkers located to the south and south-west of site. Site bounded on road-fronted to the east and south by rubble sandstone boundary wall. Main entrance gateway to the east comprising a pair of decorative cast-iron gate posts supporting a pair of hooped wrought-iron gates.
