Excavation licence number 04E1447. Test excavation was carried out on a proposed residential development site at Straid, Clonmany, Co. Donegal, on 26 October 2004. Although there are no recorded monuments on the site, a souterrain is known to be present. It was discovered some years ago when an opening in the roof of one of the chambers, possibly the original entrance, was uncovered. The proposed development plan provides for a 25m buffer zone around the monument. However, as it was considered possible that associated archaeological material might exist in the vicinity of the souterrain, a programme of testing was required. The souterrain, which is built into the upper slope of a hillock, was inspected prior to testing. A metal plate covering the existing point of access was removed to permit a preliminary examination of the monument. This chamber is a substantial beehive-shaped structure built of rounded stones and capped with large lintels. There are three further chambers to the south and south-west, each being accessed through a short creepway. The chambers are similarly constructed but vary somewhat in size and shape. The total extent of the souterrain is estimated at c. 10-12m north-west/south-east. A tracked excavator fitted with a wide toothless bucket was retained to open four trenches (30-90m long) across those parts of the development site lying nearest to the souterrain. Dark-grey/brown silty sand topsoil, averaging 0.3m in thickness, overlay coarse sand and gravel deposits on the high ground and silty sands on the low ground. No archaeological material was discovered during testing, but a series of mitigation measures were recommended. Located c. 18m W of an 18th century C of I church, and c. 10m W of the wall of Clonmany graveyard (DG010-011001-), believed to be the early ecclesiastical site of Culmaine (Gwynn and Hadcock 1970, 377). A large hole (approx. diam. 2m) in the front garden of a modern bungalow leads down into a small roughly oval shaped, drystone-built chamber (int. diam. 1.67m E-W; 2.74m N-S; approx. max. H 3m). The roof of this chamber was originally corbelled but is now largely collapsed and the rubble partly fills the interior of the chamber. A small square-shaped opening (Wth. 0.65m; H 0.5m; L 0.6m) at the base of the chamber wall at SSE is a creepway leading into a stone-lined passage (L 4.6m; max. Wth 1.4m; H 1.34m) with natural clay floor orientated on a SSE-NNW axis. The walls of the passage incline inwards slightly towards the top and support a roof of stone lintels. At the SSE end of the passage, there is another square-shaped creepway (Wth. 0.58m; H 0.55m; L 0.39m) leading into a second stone-lined passage (L 5.3m; max. - Clonmany Church of Ireland Parish Church, church/chapel, 1770–1780, Regional interest, registry number 40804002, https://www.buildingsofireland.ie/niah/search.jsp?type=record&county=DG&regno=40804002. Freestanding two-bay Church of Ireland church, built c. 1772 and altered c. 1830, having two-storey tower (on square-plan) to the entrance gable (west) having crenellated parapet over (Irish-style crenellations), and with single-bay single-storey vestry attached to the north-east corner. Church unroofed in 1927 and now a ruin. Brick vault below vestry. Roof now removed, formerly pitched natural slate, with surviving ashlar ogee eaves course and with raised verges to gable ends. Moulded stone stringcourse to tower at base of parapet. Brick and rubble stone chimneystack to the north elevation of vestry. Roughcast rendered rubble stone walls over chamfered ashlar plinth course. Pointed-arch window openings having moulded sandstone surrounds and sills; window fittings now gone. Square-headed openings to vestry, fittings now removed. Pointed-arch openings to tower at belfry level having remains of timber louvered fittings. Pointed-arch doorway to the west elevation of tower having moulded sandstone surround, moulded stone lintel, and former overlight; fittings now removed. Remains of lime plaster to interior walls. Set back from road in own grounds to the west of Clonmany. Graveyard to site, now out of use, having collection of recumbent and upstanding gravemarkers dating from the early-eighteenth century until the late-nineteenth century, some with metal railed enclosures. Rubble stone boundary walls to site. Pedestrian gateway to the west comprising a pair of ashlar gate piers (on square-plan) having pyramidal capstones over, and with flight of stone steps.

Corrugated-metal roof with concrete gable coping to single-bay byre, pitched slate to two-bay byre. Painted rendered walls. Square-headed window openings over painted cut stone sills, timber six-over-six horned sash windows. Square-headed door opening with timber panelled door. Set in own grounds off road, remnant gardens to front. Single-bay outbuilding to south with mono-pitch corrugated-metal roof, single-bay outbuilding to north-east with pitched corrugated-metal roof.
