- DG038-041: Cist, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CDG038-041----. On a low ridge overlooking a broad, flat valley to the E and SE. Elsewhere views were obscured by higher ground. Cist discovered during ploughing in 1969. It was said to contain a complete vase. The tripartite vase, although by then broken, was acquired by the National Museum of Ireland in 1971. The cist was re-sealed in 1969. The capstone was relocated in 1978 and the monument investigated by Kelly on behalf of the National Museum that same year. Subrectangular short cist (dims. 0.75m NW-SE; 0.4m NE-SW; D 0.46m) defined principally by four slabs set on edge. In addition single thin slabs had been placed upon the top of both the NW and NE sides to raise their heights and so allow the capstone to rest on all four sides. The floor was paved with a single slab. The large capstone extended beyond its SE end. The interior of the cist was empty. The outine of portion of the pit dug to house the cist was partially identifiable (dim. 1.38.) in the upper levels of the section. - DG038-048: Midden, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CDG038-048----. The midden is located in lowlying ground at the base of a high, steep hill. According to local reports this may have formed part of the eastern shoreline of Lough Swilly prior to extensive land reclamation. A small portion of the top of this midden had previously been identified by P. Woodman and B. MacNaught during field-walking exercises in the Tievebane area. During the course of their work they also apparently discovered quantities of Mesolithic and Neolithic flints etc. in the vicinity of the midden. Large quantities of individual oyster shells are visible in the fields in proximity of the monument. Portion of the eastern side of the midden has been destroyed as a consequence of the construction of an access roadway which winds its way up the hill to where a housing development is to be located. A section through the midden is identifiable at the WSW side of the access roadway (total L NNW-SSE; H above 'new' ground level c. 0.2m - 0.35m; D below pre-existing ground level c. 0.55m). Centrally located within this is layer of tightly packed oyster and other shells, burnt stones and some tiny fragments of bone within a matrix of burnt, black soil (L c. 3.3m). The portions of the layer on either side of the burnt area are not as tightly packed with shell but are also differentiated by a very distinct difference in colour and composition from the ground on either side of them. There are two small areas of tightly-packed shells visible on the 'new' ground level on the site of the levelled portion of the midden. The first (dims. c. 2.4m E-W; 2.2m N-S) adjoins the N extent of the exposed section and extends beyond it. The second (c.2.4m NW-SE; c. 1.6m NE-SW) is c. 2.8m SW of the centre of the burnt area of the layer. Described in 2001 as 'The remnants of a shell midden were noted by fieldwalkers. These were confined to a field boundary defined by scrub and mature trees with a slight down lynchet on the northern side. The only surviving portion of this shell midden was a strip running down slope for 3 metres and extending for no more than 1 metre in width. Even this remnant would appear to have been disturbed by roots and may have been no more than 15cms in thickness. This surviving portion is dominated by oyster shells. There is no indication as to how extensive this shell midden might have been originally. The surviving portion lies on a compartatively steep part of the slope and was situated about 15 metres from the gate. A sample of shells collected in 2001 was submitted to Beta Analytic. Beta 155376 measured age 3930 +-50 b.p. The field to the south had produced an early Mesolithic assemblage from an area further uplsope, on a flat terrace overlooking reclaimed lands and Lough Swilly. To the north in a similar type of location a later prehistoric assemblage was recovered. At present both fields are covered by grass' (Woodman & Milner 2001, 4-5; Milner & Woodman 2007, 104-5, No. 1). Compiled by: Caimin O'Brien Date of upload: 17 August 2010.

Quantities of Mesolithic and Neolithic flints etc. have been identified by Dr. Woodman and B. McNaught in the fields surrounding the one within which this monument is located. Fragmentary remains of a levelled monument. It is situated on a steep SSE-facing slope and was uncovered during groundworks at a development site. It is extremely disturbed and now comprises a tiny, roughly horseshoe-shaped area (dims. c. 1.6m NNW-SSE; c. 1.2m ENE-WSW) with the SSE side open, comprising a series of burnt stones within a matrix of burnt soil. No shells were identified. The visible remains range between 5cm and 15cm above the 'new' ground level. They lie between c. 0.2m and c. 0.45m beneath the pre-existing ground level. There is no evidence to suggest that what is now visible corresponds to the original plan of the monument. This, together with the size and locational profile fo the monument, render it extremely unlikely that this marks the remains of a fulacht fia or burnt mound. It is more likely to have been a hearth.
- DG038-055: Midden, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CDG038-055----. In the townland of Tievebane, near Burnfoot, Co. Donegal, the construction of new housing units, roads and associated services allowed the identification of four potential areas for archaeology by Cia McConway and Vincent McClorey of Archaeological Development Services Ltd, der licence No. 06E0974. These areas were all contained within the southern end of the development, but, after investigation, only two of these areas produced any archaeological evidence. Both areas of archaeology lay along the lower-lying southern limits of the site, on or close to the flood-plain. The bigger of the two areas was a shell midden, part of which had already been disturbed and truncated with the construction of an access road, the remainder surviving into the unexcavated baulk. As exposed on plan, the midden spread measured 10m north-west/south-east by 4.5m, although it is uncertain how much of this spread was due to disturbance and compaction by machinery prior to our arrival. What can be certain, however, is that the midden continued undisturbed into a west-facing baulk and here measured 11m north–south by 0.45m deep. A number of strata were identified along the section face but in general consisted of a series of compacted shell, mostly oyster, whole and fragmented, within a charcoal-stained dark-brown friable soil. The midden exposed in plan has been sealed with terram and reburied; likewise, the exposed section face has been covered and reburied. The development has been redesigned to have no further impact here. The second area of archaeology measured 9m east–west by 6m and here a small number of intercutting pits of varying sizes and depths were excavated. In general these pits were filled with charcoal-flecked dark-brown soil with small amounts of burnt red earth and occasional burnt stones throughout. A small number of struck flint were recovered from these, and its nature and location along the flood-plain would suggest that this area is likely to have been used as a prehistoric cooking/temporary camp site (Bennett 2009, 100).
