The interior is level except for a slight depression said to be the N end of a souterrain (DG029-019002-) which can be entered from outside the enclosure area to the S. The souterrain consists of a main passage extending 7m N towards the cashel before being blocked by loose stones and soil. The walls are of drystone construction and the roof consists of 9 flagstones. It is 1m wide and 0.8m high. It is entered by an aperture .33m × 0.65m now blocked by stones. 2.3m from this entrance a passage .55m wide × 0.4m high turns to the W. It is roofed by 4 flags and extends 3m before being blocked. A second passage 5.6m from the present entrance and also leading W is .65m wide and 0.25m high. Two flagstones roof the passage which is likewise blocked at 2m. Buncrana Castle, described in 1601 as a small castle inhabited by Connor McGarrett O'Doherty, it was repaired early in 1602 by Hugh Boy O'Doherty. After Sir Cahir O'Doherty's revolt in 1608 it was burnt by English forces and may have been repaired soon after. It was granted to Chichester at the time of the Plantation and he leased it to Henry Vaughan who is described in 1611 as having 'buylte at Buncrannagh viz. The castle stronglie rebuylded w'th a parapitt on the topp of it, after the English fashion; . . . lyme burnte and other pr'parations made ready for a bawne (DG029-025003-) aboute the castle' (Hunter 1975, 81). The Vaughan family resided there until the present house (DG029-025002-) was built in 1718 (Davies and Swan 1939, 183-5). The building is now a National Monument in state guardianship (No. 435). The ruined and much altered tower-house is situated beside the Crana River. Most of the original features are obscured by later alterations. Sub-rectangular in plan 9.9m × 8.6m externally, the walls rise from battered lower courses and are built of large blocks and rubble laid in mortar. The building is three storeys in height. The floors were of timber joists set in the E and W walls of the first floor and carried on scarcements at second-floor level. The original entrance was probably in the centre of the N wall at ground-floor level. The opening was subsequently built up and fitted with a small central win-dow (now blocked) flanked by two gun-loops. Within is a mural-lobby with a murder hole over it and to the W is a small mural-passage with a wall-press on the S and beside it a blocked-up loop. To the E of the entrance a mural-stairs leads to the upper apartments. The doorway to the main ground-floor chamber is opposite the entrance; it has been altered. The chamber was lighted on three sides by narrow loops set in rectangular embrasures; only that in the E wall is intact. The embrasure on the S was subsequently reduced in width to accommodate a door, now blocked-up, and the outer wall in that on the W was rebuilt. The present entrance to the tower-house is at first-floor level by a door centrally set in the E wall. Opposite it is the entrance to the first-floor chamber. It probably was originally lighted on three sides by Windows set in embrasures with splayed ingoings. That in the N wall has been converted to a fireplace, that in the W wall has been reduced in width and fitted with a small loop, and that in the S wall has been almost completely blocked up save for a passage to the mural-garderobe at the W end of the S wall; the outer corner wall of the garderobe is secondary and contains three gun-loops. The mural-stairs continues through the E wall and around the SE corner to a door in the S wall at second-floor level. This storey may be a complete rebuilding of the earlier walls or might be a later addition. The chamber was lighted by a large rectangular window in the N, E and W walls, and there is a fireplace in the W wall. Within the N and S gables was an attic; it is featureless and was probably approached through a trapdoor. Access to the wall-walk was by a continuation of the mural-stairs in the S wall. The plan of Buncrana Castle, particularly the two lower storeys, is that of a typical medieval tower-house and the date of the building certainly must not be earlier than the 15th century (for plan see Davies and Swan 1939, 186-7). Detached nine-bay two-storey over raised basement country house, dated 1718, having central shallow advanced three-bay breakfront to the main elevation (east), advanced single-bay two-storey over raised basement projections\pavilions to either end of the main elevation (north and south), single-bay two-storey return to the rear (west), later two-bay two-storey extension to the south elevation (added c. 1860), and with handball alley to the north elevation. Pitched triple-pile stone slate roof to main body of building having concave ashlar eaves course, surviving sections of cast-iron rainwater goods, and with rendered brick chimneystacks and raised rendered verges to the gable ends (north and south); hipped stone slate roofs to advanced end bays\pavilions having concave ashlar eaves course to front elevation (east), cast-iron rainwater goods, and with rendered chimneystacks; replacement slate roof to extension to the south having red brick eaves course; hipped replacement natural slate roof to rear return. Roughcast rendered finish over rubble stone construction with raised render block quoins to the corners of advanced end bays\pavilions, smooth rendered round-headed niches to the inner faces of advanced pavilions at ground floor level, and with slightly projecting walls at basement level having natural slate coping over. Smooth rendered walls to breakfront at ground and first floor level. Brick construction to chimneybreasts. Square-headed window openings having painted cut stone sills, and with nine-over-nine pane timber sliding sash windows with exposed sash boxes at ground floor level, and six-over-six pane timber sliding sash windows at first floor level having exposed sash boxes. Square-headed window openings at basement level having replacement windows. Square-headed doorway to the centre of breakfront having timber panelled double-doors, and with cut stone doorcase having open scrolled pediment, pulvinated frieze, and pilaster strips incised ‘Anno 17’ and ‘Dom 18’. Doorway reached up sweeping staircase having moulded cut stone steps, cut stone threshold, and with flanking dwarf walls having cut stone coping and wrought-iron railings. Set back from road in own grounds to the north-west of Buncrana, located on small peninsula with Crana River to the east and Lough Swilly\Buncrana Bay to the south and west. Rubble stone boundary walls to the south and to the west of site. Terraced garden complex to the south. Sunken garden with rubble retaining walls with ashlar coping to front courtyard, with circular cast-iron railing to centre. Outbuildings (40815002) arranged around courtyard to west with high red brick boundary walls to rear. Handball alley (see 40815076) attached to the north side of house. Site bounded by rubble stone walls. Complex of walls throughout immediate vicinity of property, with former terraced garden (see 40815007) to the south-east. Earlier O’Doherty Castle (tower house, see RMP DG029-025001-) to the east. Round-plan turret-like structure to north-west of site housing a well (see 40815074). Demesne accessed by six-arch bridge (see 40815003) over Crana River to the east. Wrought-iron gates mounted on cast-iron gate posts to west side of bridge. Two main demesne entrances constituting stone gate-piers sited to east beyond former approach driveway (see 40815005) and to south-east of bridge approach (40815004). Quay to south-east (40815006). Former walled garden (on irregular-plan) adjacent to the west, now out of use, having rubble stone boundary walls with brick lining to interior in places. Site enclosed by rubble stone boundary walls. Gateways to site having rubble stone gate piers (on square-plan). Built on sloping embankment to west side of River Crana at the entrance to Lough Swilly Estuary. Sited adjacent to the south-east of Buncrana Castle, and to the north-west of Buncrana town centre.

Handball alley on rectangular-plan built up against the north elevation of Buncrana Castle (see 40915001), erected c. 1920, having side walls that reduce\taper in height away from the side elevation of house. Now out of use. Constructed of random rubble stone with rendered finish over. Grass deck. Located to the north elevation of Buncrana Castle, and to the north-west of the centre of Buncrana.

Freestanding multiple-bay two-storey defensive battery, dated 1812 and altered c. 1897, rectangular plan with obtuse angle to north-east, attached to east portion of five-sided D-shaped battery. Now closed to public. Parapet atop tower and battery, red brick (stretcher bond) chimneystacks with terracotta pots to south-east battery elevation. Coursed and squared rubble limestone walling with stressed quoins and plinth to tower, squared random coursed walling with tooled quoins and modern metal railings, smooth rendered coping. Multiple musket loops at ground level and first floor of tower (now reduced in height, probably at end of nineteenth century), square-headed opening with vertical five-bar iron guard to south-west elevation, multiple machicolations to battery at ground and parapets levels. Segmental-headed entrance archway at with dressed voussoirs, dated keystone (1812) and projecting imposts and jambs, three machicolations to each side of reveal, painted timber matchboard doors, accessed via curved sunken way cut through glacis at south-east. Interior modified 1897 by construction of two 6-inch breech-loader emplacements and basement magazine, replacing earlier armament mounts at seaward side of battery. A 64-pounder RML concrete practice battery built c. 1900 survives outside the main battery and guard house to the north-east, with six gun emplacements, four with front pivot and iron rails or tracks and two with a central pivot and circular track, cartridge recesses and magazine to south-east, and depression rangefinder positions to each end. Located on the edge of a rocky headland on the shores of Lough Swilly with strategic views north, west and south across the Lough, glacis to south-east is now a maintained lawn. RNLI boathouse located to south-east and boat slipway to south.
- Tullyarvan Mills, mill (water), 1910–1930, Regional interest, registry number 40902923, https://www.buildingsofireland.ie/niah/search.jsp?type=record&county=DG&regno=40902923. Detached multiple-bay two- three- and four-storey former mill complex, built c. 1810 and extended c. 1855 and c. 1919. Originally in use as a corn mill, later is use as chemical mill and as a hat production facility. Converted for use as a corn mill in 1919 and extended. Later in use as a cattle and poultry feed production site from 1929 until 1945. Now in use as a hostel, conference centre and business enterprise unit with large modern extension to the north built c. 1992. Pitched natural and artificial slate roofs with clay ridge tiles, raised rendered verges to some gable ends, cut stone kneeler stone detailing to eaves to a number of the blocks, red brick chimneystack to block to the west. Randomly coursed rubble stone walls with flush roughly dressed block-and-start quoins to the corners; cement rendered finish to some sections. Square-headed window openings with flush red brick block-and-start surrounds, replacement timber casement windows, and concrete sills. Square-headed door openings with flush red brick block-and-start brick surrounds, and replacement timber doors and double-doors. Double-height entrance hall with exposed metal trusses and timber boarded ceiling. Complex set back from road to the west bank of the Crana River, to the north of the centre of Buncrana. Remains of former mill race to the north-west, now dry.

Gateway serving Westbrook Cottage, erected c. 1875, comprising a pair of partially rendered dressed, coursed and squared limestone gate piers (on square-plan) having pyramidal ashlar capstones over, and with a pair of wrought-iron flat-bar gates having spear finials over, and with scrolled wrought-iron latch. Located to the north-east of single-storey house on L-shaped plan (altered and not in survey) at start of approach avenue to house. Single-storey outbuilding (possible original house to site) located to the north of house. Rubble stone boundary walls adjoining pier to the south-east, rendered rubble stone wall to the north-west having saddle-backed coping. Approach avenue to house bounded by hedge rows. Located to the north of the centre of Buncrana.
- Westbrook House, house, 1800–1850, registry number 40902945, https://www.buildingsofireland.ie/niah/search.jsp?type=record&county=DG&regno=40902945. Detached three-bay two-storey house, built c. 1840, having single-bay single-storey flat-roofed porch to the centre of the front elevation (east) having modern metal railings over. Now extended to the north with large single-storey extension and also in use as a guest house. Possibly containing fabric of earlier house to site, built c. 1807. Hipped natural slate roof with a central pair of rendered chimneystacks having terracotta pots over. Rendered walls with rendered block-and-start quoins to the corners of the front elevation. Square-headed window openings with painted stone sills, and with eight-over-eight pane timber sliding sash windows at ground floor level, and replacement fittings at first floor level. Round-headed window opening to front face of porch having three-over-six pane timber sliding sash window with spoked head to upper sash. Square-headed doorway to the north face of porch having replacement door. Central square-headed doorway at first floor level, over porch, having glazed timber double-doors\French doors. Set back from road in attractive mature landscape grounds to the west bank of the Crana River, and to the north\north-east of the centre of Buncrana. Wilson’s Bridge (see 40902928) adjacent to the south-east. Rubble stone boundary walls to site boundary to the south-west and west. Enlarged gateway to the south-west.
- Mass rock, 1690–1750, Regional interest, registry number 40902946, https://www.buildingsofireland.ie/niah/search.jsp?type=record&county=DG&regno=40902946. Mass rock, erected\in use c. 1730, comprising an irregular limestone rock altar (on sub rectangular-plan) having iron cross finial over. Rock set into natural mound in field adjacent to the Crana River to the east; site largely overgrown with brush. Cockhill Bridge (see 40902925) adjacent to the south and St. Mary’s Catholic church (see 40902924) located a short distance to the south-east.
