Located within the Ward river valley north of Knocksedan bridge and east of the old coach road north through Fingal. Abutted to north and west by road and south by river, the site comprises a flat-topped mound (diam.25m; H 6m) which is surrounded by a deep V-shaped fosse best preserved at north and northeast (Wth 8m; D 1.5m). There are faint traces of an outer bank along the west side. The bailey, is recorded as being located on the opposite side of the road as a level raised area (dims.56m E-W; 70m N-S H 0.5m) (Healy 1975, 23). However to the east of the now overgrown mound is a flat area that slopes down and could constitute part of the bailey. The motte will be included in the planned Ward River Valley Park. This is a large, single semi-circular arched stone road bridge, c.1800, over the Ward river on the R108. It is constructed of coursed rubble limestone with large, roughly squared voussoirs and projecting keystone with simple hood moulding. The crossing is indicative of an earlier bridge and older ford. Visible but unnamed on Rocque’s 1760 map (Historic Road Bridges 2009, Vol. 2, 131). Plaque on roadside façade, erected to commemorate point of assembly for Fingal Volunteers prior to the Battle of Ashbourne, Easter Week 1916. Brazil House was built by Sir Richard Bolton, Lord Chancellor of Ireland in the reign of Charles Ic.1632-1640. It had a rectangular plan, rising to two storeys with multiple gables and projecting chimneys both in the gables. One had an oven. The chimney stacks were brick with arcading and decorative plaster pendants. The wall masonry was covered externally with thin plaster, lightly rough cast. On the quoins and around the openings, the plaster was brought to a finer surface with a block and start design. The multiple gables had fine brick skewbacks. The house was indicated on the First Edition OS maps as 'Brazil house in ruins'. It was damaged by fire in the 19th-century and finally demolished in 1977 (Anon 1918, 191, Pl XV; Knight of Glin, Griffin, D & Robinson, K, 1988). Test excavation (Licence no. 07E0119) was undertaken in the area of the demolished house and a significant amount of structural debris related to the house identified. A substantial ditch was identified to the southwest. Aligned NW/SE the ditch (max. 5m w.) was not bottomed. Bone recovered from the fill but no diagnostic material (Ní Lionán 2007, 22). OPENINGS: Round arch; cut stone voussoirs and key stone.

Detached three-bay two-storey house, c.1800, with advanced gabled breakfront. Seven-bay two-storey wing attached to north. Now vacant. Wall-mounted post box set into end wall.ROOF: Hipped and double pitched; slates; terracotta ridge tiles; cast-iron rain water goods; two tall chimneys rendered to main section, handmade red brick to other. Slates to rear elevation of east-west wing are particularly small. WALLS: Rough-cast render; nap render plinth; coursed rubble rear walls with lime render. OPENINGS: Square headed; patent reveals; granite cills and steps; 6/6 timber sash windows to main elevation, replacement timber casements to secondary elevation. Tongue and groove doors c.1940.
