Sandycove Martello Tower No. 11 (Kerrigan 1995, 17), situated on a raised area at Sandycove Point overlooking Scotsman's Bay. According to Kerrigan (1995, 168) construction of the Dublin area Martello Towers and their batteries commenced in 1804 under the supervision of Colonel Benjamin Fisher of the Royal Engineers and by December 1805 all towers were armed and complete. Kerrigan (ibid., 170) recorded that; ‘The towers and batteries south of Dublin are numbered from 1 to 16, but there were only fourteen towers, as at two locations there were batteries only, while several of the towers were close to adjacent batteries’. A Martello tower known as Joyce's Tower because it is mentioned in Ulysses (Turner 1983, 93). It is a squat granite built circular tower. A doorway in the SSW leads into the ground floor that formerly stored the magazines and artillery. The door is defended by a murder hole. The Round Room on the first floor is accessible from a narrow stairs. It has a vaulted roof and a fireplace in the East. There is a door in the W that provides access to the roof where there is a circular gun deck with metal tracks and a central surround. There are offset recesses along the wall that allow access to gun loops. Martello Tower described by Kerrigan as; 'Sandycove tower, no. 11, similar in basic design to those at Bullock and Seapoint, is now the James Joyce Museum, the tower is the setting for the opening chapter of Ulysses. The battery here is a short distance from the Martello, on a promontory forming the eastern end of Scotsman's Bay; there were five 24-pounders here mounted on traversing platforms and two 10-inch mortars'. Bullock castle consists of a gatehouse/gatetower with adjoining hall and solar or garedrobe tower which formed the northern perimeter of the bawn wall built to defend the medieval seaport and fishing village of Bullock. The harbour and village of Bullock was protected by town defences described as an ‘Old Town Wall’ which had at least one angle tower located 135m to the S of the castle as shown on the 1837 edition of the Ordnance Survey six-inch map. This stone wall was described by William Wakeman in 1848 as the castle of Bullock was ‘furnished with a bawn of this kind, but it is much larger than usual’ (Wakeman 1848, 141). The reference to the larger than usual bawn wall, is the description of the large walled area or masonry defences that protected the harbour, quay, castle and fishing village of Bullock. The entrance to the fortified settlement and harbour was defended by the castle which stood on the N perimeter of the town/village defences. The 1654-56 Civil Survey of Dublin recorded that in Bullock there was ‘one Castle, slated, a Seaport, & a Bawne alsoe a good haven, the Buildings Valued by the Jury at one hundred poundes’ (Simington 1945, 268). The 1655-59 Down Survey map of the parish of Kill and Monkstown depicted Bullock Castle as a small castellated tower with two dwellings and is annotated ‘Bullock Towne’ indicating a possible clustered settlement around the castle and harbour of Bullock (NLI, MS 714/52). On this map a line is depicted cutting off the headland/harbour of Bullock which may be the line of ‘Old Town Wall’ which enclosed the castle, harbour and settlement of Bullock. The terrier of the 1655-59 Down Survey map of Kill and Monkstown parish recorded that; ‘in Bullocke is a ffayre Antient Towne Fishing’ (NLI, MS 714/52). In 1781 Bullock Castle and settlement was described by the Tipperary antiquarian and artist Austin Cooper as; ‘the small maritime village of Bullock which has likewise been mentioned by Mr. Wilson with the former, he is equally accurate……..This place tho’[ugh] much decayed exhibits a complete Walled town in Miniature, from the Cas[tl]e. a Wall extends east, to a small tower, part whereof still remains; & thence turning north, at a proportionate distance where Cabbin now stands; (but formerly a tower) (Price 1942, 68). The seaward tower, upon the ground-floor, contains the original doorway and inner porch. From the right hand side of the latter feature rises a spiral stair, communicating to the upper apartments, and to a series of small rooms in the same tower, which appear to have been bedrooms. Beneath, or through the opposite tower, is a round-headed gateway, leading into the spacious courtyard or bawn of the castle. The upper portion of this tower was divided by floors into small closets, probably bedrooms. The apartments between the towers are large, measuring 23 feet 6 inches [7.2m], by about 17 feet [5.2m]. The first and second stories were furnished each with an ample fireplace and spacious deeply-recessed windows, with round or rather semicircular-headed opes. The ground-floor is vaulted by a heavy barrel arch of stone. There is a garderobe to the first floor, and the whole of the upper walls are gracefully battlemented, in a style which is almost peculiar to Ireland. At an angle of the bawn or courtyard, may be seen a small watch-tower with similar finishings’. Today the castle stands on the SW shore of Bullock Harbour on elevated ground overlooking Harbour Road. Bullock castle or gatehouse consists of a low central rectangular block with higher projecting flanking towers on SW and SE angles. The tower on the SW angle contains the gateway into the bawn of Bullock castle, harbour and settlement. The SE tower contains the spiral stairs which provides access to the upper levels of the castle and possible bedrooms with garderobes serving as a solar or bedroom tower. The central block stands three storeys high with a crenellated parapet. The walls are built of randomly coursed granite with dressed granite quoins. A carved head with conical-shapel helmet with straight bar noseguard projects from a quoin stone on the SW corner of the S wall of the castle at first floor level. The ground floor consists of a barrel-vaulted chamber (int. dims. L 6.2m x Wth. 4.7m) that serves today as a chapel. The castle is entered through a round segmental-arched doorway in the S wall of the garderobe tower on the SE angle. The interior of the ground floor chamber is lit by slit opes in the N and S walls. There is a wall-press or cupboard in the S wall. The W tower is accessed by a gated passage at ground level. A spiral stairway in the E tower provides access from the ground floor to the upper floors of the central tower. Between the ground and first floor of the central tower is a mezzanine level which has a corbelled roof. The central chamber on the first floor (int. dims. L 7.25m x Wth 5.1m) has a fireplace in the centre of the N wall. The interior of the first floor is lit by two slit opes and a tall round-headed window in the N wall. There are small chambers off to the SE, NE and W side of the central chamber. The SE chamber is corbelled and contains a wall-press. Its interior is lit by slit opes. On the second floor of the central tower there is a fireplace in the N wall, which is blocked up. The original corbels for the hood are present. There is a round-headed window in the W wall with a stepped embrasure. A chamber in the W tower is entered off the central chamber through a pointed arched opening. A second chamber is visible in the NE angle, it is entered through a pointed-arched doorway with a lintelled chamber off to the side. There is a third chamber known as the 'Abbots room' which is entered off the staircase leading to the wall-walk. It has a corbelled roof with a wall-press in the SW corner and is lit by single-light opes. The wall-walk at parapet level has stepped battlements. Bullock Castle and Turret or bawn tower was painted by James Arthur O'Connor in 1830 with the title ‘A view of Bullock Castle and Bawn, Dalkey, Co. Dublin’. The building was described recently by Christies Auction House as follows; 'Bullock Castle stands about two miles east of Dun Laoghaire harbour just above the shore of Dublin Bay Harbour on the road to Dalkey. It is thought to have been built by the Cistercian Monks of St. Mary's Abbey, Dublin, in order to protect their fishing rights. Following the suppression of the monasteries during King Henry VIII's reign it was leased to the Crown and later in the 16th Century it became the property of two brothers, Christopher and Richard Fagan, both of whom became Lord Mayors of Dublin. The ruined tower [DU023-020002-] to the left of the composition was a watch tower or defence in the curtain wall which extends to the right of the picture, which was built to protect the small harbour which could originally be reached only through an arch in the castle which still exists. The two storey pedimented house in front of the castle was built in the first half of the 18th century, remodelled or rebuilt in the 19th Century, and demolished in the 1980s. The tower which was shown in ordnance survey maps of 1837 was demolished circa 1850. The castle itself, which has been restored, now forms part of Our Lady's Manor Nursing Home. In 1345-6 a suit between Philip Wafre, Abbot of St Mary’s Abbey between 1337-51 and Walter de Bermyngham, Justiciar of Ireland between 1345-6 established the monasteries claim to the fishing tolls from Bullock by proving that Bullock was part of the manor Carrickbrennan, held by St Mary’s Abbey under a charter granted by Henry II, King of England between 1154-1189. The abbot of the monastery or one of his officials had the right to select one fish from every fish-laden vessel which entered the port of Bullock (Gilbert 1884, Vol. 1, xlii). In 1539-40 at the Dissolution of the Monasteries, the lands and possessions of St. Mary’s Abbey, Dublin, included the ‘Villata of Bloyke’ town of Bullock, whose chief tenants were Patrick Bermingham and John Gaben who were in the possession of two meassuages/dwellings in Bullock (Gilbert 1884, Vol. 2, 64). The 1654-56 Civil Survey of Dublin recorded that in 1641 the lands of Bullock in the parish of Monkstown, amounting to 90 Irish acres was in the possession of Christopher Fagan of Feltrim Castle (DU015-038----) near Swords, who is described as an ‘Irish Papist’ (Simington 1945, 268). According to this survey the ‘Chief fish, Tith[e] fish, Custome fish, & Corne Tithes’ belonged to the owner of Bullock Castle. In 1694 the tithes of the forfeited estate of Richard Fagan of Feltrim which included the ‘Tythes of Hay, Corn & Fish of Bullock’ were granted to Thomas Lord Coningsby of Hampton Court Castle, Herefordshire. In 1703 John Allen of Stillorgan House (DU023-012001-) paid the sum of £1,750 to the Trustees of Forfeitures of 1688 for the forfeited lands of Bullock which included the ‘Lands of Bullock, with all Houses, Ways, Fishings & c. thereto' which was the ‘Estate of Richard Fagan, attainted’ (VRTI NAI Lodge/9/322). Bullock castle and town defences were described in 1820 as a; ‘village possessing a small quay upon the bay. It has also a Castle and Ramparts, the date of which is unknown; but these defences are with great probability supposed to have been intended for the protection of commerce, both from theTories of the mountains, and the pirates who in former times infested the neighbouring seas’ (Cromwell 1820, 3). Situated to the NE of the junction of Harbour Road and Breffni Road, the site of this well is c. 37.5m to the NE of Bullock castle (DU023-020001-). The site was excavated and it was found that the well was situated within a small rectangular structure built against the W part of the site boundary wall. An entrance was located on the N side of the structure and measuring 3.9m E-W. A 4.8m length of this structure whose function is unknown, was exposed in the excavation but the structure continued south. The mouth of the well (1.6m) was partially covered by re-used dressed granite slabs. It was lined with granite stones and boulders with granite spalls and putty-like clay between the stones and descended 2.5m to a concave base (diam. 1m). Beneath later collapse at the base of the well was a layer of black organic silt approximately .20m in depth containing twigs, a pig's tooth and some bristles. A lead pipe functioning as a bore led from the bottom of the well upwards but its outlet was not identified within the excavated area. The well was overlain by a tiled floor with red and grey tiles dating to the 19th century (O'Brien 1990, E000971). OS six-inch map. The present quay was built in the 18th-century to facilitate the construction if nearby lighthouses. This quay may have replaced an earlier quay that was depicted on a painting of the harbour by Frances Place in 1699 (De Courcy 1996, 53-54). The complexity of the evolution of Bullock Harbour has been identified by virtue of interrogating this limited pictorial and textual evidence relative to the LiDAR scans made by the author and their research team in 2016' (Shotton 2019, 137-8). According to Shotton (2019, 147); 'the perspective in the drawing, defined by the vanishing lines of the castle and piers, establish that Place’s eye-level was at the midpoint of the castle height. Only “Old Bullock” rocks, on the east side of the harbour, would have provided a vantage point this high'. Shotton (2019, 150) argues that; 'during the medieval period in Ireland fishing most often involved the use of weirs for catching fish that was hauled in with small boats, which could have easily been drawn up onto the sandy beach present at Bullock at that period. Though there is no evidence to confirm or deny the presence of structures at this period, as harbour structures rarely survive intact for 400 years or more, there is reasonable doubt as to the piers illustrated by Place being of early medieval origin'. Shotton (2019, 151) has suggested that the pier illustrated in 1699 by Frances Place was possibly; ‘built by the Fagans after this point (c. 1611), though no evidence has been found to verify this hypothesis. The only certainty is that piers did exist at the time of the Fagan tenure in the late seventeenth century’. Shotton identified from the LIDAR scans; ‘the physical remains of a rough-hewn stone structure is visible within the larger ashlar (dressed) granite construction built by Dublin Port. The rough hewn stone construction in the scan may consist of two independently constructed structures (toned in red), as there is a continuous joint present (white dashed lines). The lengthier section at the bottom of the image closely matches the dimensions quoted by Bligh and given the irregularity of its edge condition it appears likely that it had partially collapsed. The smaller remnant near the top left of the scan may relate to an earlier pier but its position has not been adequately correlated to the eastern pier illustrated by Place in the analysis to date’ (Shotton 2019, 156). This is a small sea port, situated near the southern entrance of the bay, and capable of being made a safe harbour for larger vessels than at present frequent it. On the land side, the town is inclosed with a stone wall, and defended by an old gothic castle, which is kept in good repair. A new quay faced with hewn stone, hath been lately built, for the convenience of conveying stones to the light-house-works’ (Wilson 1770, 208). Bullock castle, harbour and town defences were described in 1820 as a; ‘village possessing a small quay upon the bay. Bullock Martello Tower No. 10 located on private property SE of Bullock Harbour. According to Kerrigan (1995, 168) construction of the Dublin area Martello Towers and their batteries commenced in 1804 under the supervision of Colonel Benjamin Fisher of the Royal Engineers and by December 1805 all towers were armed and complete. Kerrigan (ibid., 170) recorded that; ‘The towers and batteries south of Dublin are numbered from 1 to 16, but there were only fourteen towers, as at two locations there were batteries only, while several of the towers were close to adjacent batteries’. Built on a rock outcrop for the protection of the harbor and now converted into a dwelling. Externally the Martello tower is surrounded by a low circular wall (Turner 1983, 93). A circular tower (diam. 10.8m N-S), built of coursed granite ashlar, is gently battered to the parapet. The two storey drum 5m high is capped with a flat roof and parapet above. A narrow string course defines the level of the stairs as it reaches the roof externally and the angle of the parapet as it slopes upwards. Entry to the buildings is on the W side, up an external wooden staircase and through first floor flat headed doorway. The entry is well defended as above the doorway is a machicolation supported on five corbels. There is a drop hole through to the corridor below from the machicolation. Along the corridor there are three steps down to a round-headed doorway which provides access to the interior. The garrison room or first floor room is 6.1 m in overall length and width with flat walls to the N and S while the E and W sides are bow-shaped following an arc. There are narrow flat headed opes at the NE and SW, with a wall press at the NW. A stone spiral staircase opens off the room to the south within the wall width (2.5m) providing access to the ground floor and to the roof. The ceiling at first floor level is vaulted and rises to 3.6 m above the wooden floor between ground and first floor. Below, at ground level, the space is similar in plan dimensions and form to the level above but it is lower in height (2.35m) and is covered by a timber floor. From the roof level which consists of an open circular area surrounded by a broad parapet (2.4m) with a canon pivot at the centre, there are four steps down to floor level of the machicolation which has gun loops through its external parapet. Martello Tower No. 10 described by Kerrigan (1995, 173) as; 'North-west of Dalkey Island at a distance of just over a mile is tower no. 10, overlooking the approach to Bullock Harbour, in sight of the Dalkey Island tower and the next tower further to the north-west at Sandycove. According to Kerrigan (1995, 168) construction of the Dublin area Martello Towers and their batteries commenced in 1804 under the supervision of Colonel Benjamin Fisher of the Royal Engineers and by December 1805 all towers were armed and complete. Depicted on the 1863 ed. OSi 25-inch map as a semi-circular shaped area (dims. c. 34m E-W x 19m N-S) enclosed by an ashlar built stone wall standing on a rocky headland overlooking Scotsman's Bay to the W. A plan of the Battery dated 1883 shows the presence of a 'path cut thro the rocks' which may represent the original rock cut defences contemporaneous with the construction of the 'Battery' (IE/MA/MPD/AD119456-003). The sea defences constructed at Sandycove consisted of a single-gun Martello Tower (DU023-019----) alongside a multi-gun, fortified emplacement known as the Sandycove Battery which was armed with one 68 pounder gun and five 8-inch smooth bore guns (Clements 2011, 94; Fishback 2021,329). A plan of the Battery dated 1883 shows the D-shaped battery with a rock platform in the S quadrant of interior, with Privy and Cess Pit in W quadrant, Store building with adjoining Guard Room to SE of Cess Pit, Soldiers Quarters No. 1 and No. 2 to SE of Guard Room with another store building to W of store. On the 1st of October, 1860 the construction of a Magazine was started inside the Battery which was completed on the 5th of May 1861 at a cost of £599. The magazine was designed to 'contain 100 cases or barrels of [gun]powder' (IE/MA/MPD/AD119456-003). According to De Courcy (1996, 365) Sandycove Battery No. 11 was one of three gun batteries (Dun Laoghaire Battery No. 13 and Dalkey Island DU023-029011-) built in the early 19th century to protect the shoreline of Dublin Bay. In 1802 Admiral James Hawkins-Whitshed had been appointed the naval adviser to the Lord Lieutenant of Ireland, with orders to make arrangements for the defence of the Irish coast and to organise the sea defences of the coastline which included the construction of the Martello Towers and the batteries along the shoreline of the east coast of Ireland during the Napoleonic Wars of 1803-15. In 1803 he was appointed Commander-in-Chief of the Sea Fencibles [naval defence] in Ireland. Admiral Whitshed advised Lord (William) Cathcart, Commander in Chief in Ireland (1803-05), on the siting of the Martello towers. In 1804 the commander of the forces was authorised by the Chief Secretary to secure those parts of the coast between Drogheda and Wexford from an enemy landing. In September of that year, construction works commenced on the Martello towers and batteries defending Dublin Bay under the command of Royal Engineer, Lieutenant-Colonel Benjamin Fisher (Clements 2011, 71). By the end of 1806 the Dublin Martello Towers, of which their were 26 and their batteries had been completed (ibid. 72). According to Clements (2011, 72) 12 Martello Towers and their batteries 'were constructed between Balbriggan and Sutton Creek to the north of the city and fourteen more to the south from Sandymount to Bray. The building at Sandycove was described by De Courcy (ibid.) as follows; 'The battery at Sandycove, which had capacity for a garrison of 36 men, was on the rocky headland between the Forty-foot bathing place and Sandycove Harbour. The walled compound, which may still be seen, contained five gun emplacements commanding the bay to the west, north and east, and each gun was mounted on a roller system to enable precise aiming. A raised platform in the centre of the compound probably served as the command position, and a shot furnace was provided for heating cannon-balls as in the Sandymount Martello tower. Extensive stores and soldiers' quarters, as well as magazine, kitchen and guardroom, were included in and around the compound'. On August the 1st, 1860 The Dublin Builder recorded the following advertisement relating to works at Sandycove Battery; 'The War Department have issued advertisements for the following works in Ireland, viz.,for building a magazine and shafting-room at Sandycove battery, Dublin Bay'. Thom's Almanac of 1870 listed Master Gunner, Thomas Birks as the person in command of Sandycove battery (1870, 1640). The battery remained an active artillery installation until 1896 when it was demilitarized and leased to the Dublin Bay Sailing Club tor £30 per annum' (Fishback 2021, 329). In 1883 the battery possessed six, obsolete 150mm muzzle-loading guns, quartered 36 enlisted men, and served as a miltia artillery training facility (ibid., 329; Bolton 2008; IE/MA/MPD/AD119456-004).
