The graveyard which contains some yew trees is located on a natural rise on land which falls away to the E. This walled-in graveyard is very overgrown. It is sub-circular in plan suggesting the former existence of an early ecclesiastical enclosure (DU020-009004-). Inside the graveyard wall along the E/NE quadrant there are traces of a bivallate enclosure (dims. ext. fosse Wth 2.75m, D 1.15m; int. bank Wth 1.25m, H 0.8m; int. fosse Wth 4m, D 1.1m). Situated in a hollow, waterlogged field of pasture bounded by a stream in the ENE. Colmanstown Castle was demolished in 1960. A pier of the gateway into the castle survived into the early 1970s (Healy 1974, 23-4). The site today is marked by stonier ground. McDix (1898, 40, 78) describes two individual structures at Colmanstown, a gateway or barbican and remains of a tower house. The gateway was formed of two pillars or piers with a broad arch; the tower house was square in plan, rising to three storeys with a barrel vault over the ground floor and a plastered interior. There were fireplaces and wall presses on first and second floors. Not visible at ground level. Compiled by Geraldine Stout - DU020-011002: Field system, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CDU020-011002-. In a hollow, waterlogged field of pasture enclosed by a stream running along its NE side and surrounded on all sides by hills. Comprises a series of irregularly-shaped fields defined by shallow drains and scarps; the most prominent is a roughly rectangular strip field which runs NE-SW and is defined in the S by a ditch (Wth 4m, D 0.30-0.40m) and in the W by a bank (Wth 1.20m, H 0.40m) with external ditch (Wth 1.60m, D 0.30m). At the junction of this field and the next in the SW is a kidney-shaped mound (dims. L 3.50m, Wth 2.80m, H 0.90m). A sub-circular area defined by a ditch (Wth 2.30m) which contains faint traces of internal structures lies to the S of this field. Two drains run into the W section of this sub-circular feature. Works at or in relation to a recorded monument need two months' written notice to the National Monuments Service (National Monuments (Amendment) Act 1994, section 12). ## Architectural heritage (National Inventory of Architectural Heritage) No building of the National Inventory of Architectural Heritage stands in the townland of Colmanstown. ## Ground and risks (Radon Risk Map of Ireland, EPA; Landslide Susceptibility Classification and LiDAR, Geological Survey Ireland) - Radon: at the centre of the townland of Colmanstown, about 1 in 20 homes in this area is likely to have high radon levels. A parcel is the land of a title, not an address. The owner's name is in the Land Registry of Tailte Éireann: a copy of the folio can be ordered on landdirect.ie, for a fee; this site names no owner. A price is the price recorded for a past sale, not a valuation.
