According to Flanagan, Drynan House was a Jacobean mansion built during the reign of Charles 1 (1984, 52, 59). There is a housing estate on the site. A sheela-na-gig (DU012-024002-) was removed from a gate post at Drynan House in the 1940's and placed in the National Museum, Dublin (Dunlea 1945, 114). Compiled by: Geraldine Stout Date of upload: 26 August 2011 - DU012-024002: Sheela-na-gig, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CDU012-024002-. A sheela-na-gig was removed from a gate post at Drinan House (DU012-024001-) in the 1940's and placed in the National Museum, Dublin (DU018-305-) (Dunlea 1945, 114; Cherry 1992, 6). The original location of this sheela-na-gig has not been identified (Freitag 2004, 142). The gate post at Drinan House was not the original location for this sheela-na-gig. The finding of this carving was recorded in 1945 by Father John Dunlea, P. P. when he stated that, ‘some time ago I noticed one of those grotesque female figures known as Sheela-na-Gigs carved on a pillar which acted as a gate-post at Drynam House (DU012-024001-) near Swords, Co Dublin. It was in danger of destruction by farm-carts passing by, so I brought it to the notice of Mr. H. G. Leask, Inspector of National Monuments. He communicated with the National Museum and, on Mr. Wilson of Drynam House graciously giving permission, the stone was carefully removed and is now preserved in the Museum’ (Dunlea 1945, 114). There is no information about the original location for this sheela-na-gig, therefore this entry has been reclassified as a redundant record. See DU018-305- for more details. This kiln was excavated (Licence no. 03E1362Ext) in advance of development. It consisted of an E–W-orientated oblong-shaped cut containing two concave bowls, one of which was extensively scorched along its sides and base. Thirty-eight sherds of coarse Late Bronze Age pottery were recovered from this feature. This monument was excavated (Licence no. 03E1362Ext) in advance of development. Located 4m W of prehistoric kiln (DU012-089----) this feature consisted of a small pit filled with a charcoal-rich deposit that contained many fragments of cremated bone. Charcoal from this feature yielded a calibrated date of 1114–907 BC (Moriarty 2005). Compiled by: Christine Baker Date of upload: 5 February 2015 - DU012-091: Pit, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CDU012-091----. This monument was excavated (Licence no. 03E1362Ext) in advance of development. Located 100m E of other prehistoric activity (DU012-090---) this feature consisted of a cluster of five tightly spaced sub-circular pits. The diameters of the pits varied between 0.45m and 0.84m, while their depths varied between 0.05m and 0.16m. The cuts were filled by similar charcoal-rich fills that contained frequent fragments of struck flint (Moriarity 2005). This monument was identified during monitoring (Licence no. 03E1362ext) in advance of development. It consists of two intercutting circular enclosures, the larger of which (34m diam.) has a ditch 1.6m in width and from which a decorated loop-headed pin and a zoomorphic penannular brooch were recovered. Centrally placed within the smaller enclosure (24m diam.) were extended burials orientated E-W. Charcoal from the smaller enclosure ditch gave a calibrated date of AD 533–648 while charcoal from the larger enclosure ditch gave a calibrated date of AD 567–658 (Moriarity 2005). The monument is preserved within the open space of Holywell housing estate. Compiled by: Christine Baker Date of upload: 5 February 2015 - DU012-092002: Burial, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CDU012-092002-. This monument was identified during monitoring (Licence no. 03E1362Ext) in advance of development. Two extended burials orientated E-W were centrally placed within the smaller of two intercutting enclosures dated to the 6th – 7th centuries. They were buried in a supine position with their heads to the W. The skeletons were partially exposed during the topsoil-stripping and were in a poor state of preservation (Moriarity 2005). The monument is preserved within the open space of Holywell housing estate. This monument was excavated (Licence no. 04E1066) in advance of development. (Giacometti 2005). It consisted of a circular ditch (20m diam.) with a 3m wide entrance to the south-east. A single large pit filled with charcoal and burnt bone was found in the centre of the ring-ditch. Truncated by modern agricultural activity the ditch averaged 0.25m in depth. Fragments of Bronze Age pottery were recovered from the N end of the fill. A single oval pit (1.9m x 1.7m x 0.45m deep) was located centrally within the area enclosed by the ring-ditch. It was an irregular oval shape and measured 1.9m long (N-S) by 1.7m wide and 0.45m deep. Small fragments of possible Bronze Age pottery were also retrieved from the pit. The pit was irregular shape, suggesting numerous cuts, and it is suggested that it functioned as a multiple burial pit (Giacometti 2005). This monument was excavated (Licence no. 04E1604) in advance of development. A multi-period site, the earliest phase was identified as a single pit (0.5m diam.) that yielded over 70 sherds of Western Neolithic pottery alongside fragments of burnt bone (Halliday 2008, 21). This monument was excavated (Licence no. 04E1604) in advance of development. A multi-period site, the primary stratigraphic enclosure of the early medieval period is rectangular in plan (16.6m x 11m). Truncated by circular enclosures (DU012-094003-) to the N and E a radiocarbon date of 898-966 AD was attained from the upper fill of the enclosure ditch (Halliday 2008, 23). Compiled by: Christine Baker Date of upload: 5 February 2015 - DU012-094003: Enclosure, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CDU012-094003-. This monument was partially excavated (Licence no. 04E1604) in advance of development. A multi-period site, this circular enclosure (c. 28m diam.) truncated the E end of an earlier rectangular enclosure (DU012—094002-). The ditch varies in width between 5.5-6.2m in width and up to 1.9m in depth with a total of twenty-six fills. A rich organic deposit was identified throughout the entire ditch which included fragments of wood such as barrel hoops, a possible barrel stave and sharpened stakes. A probable bridge consisting of four large postholes was identified directly in line with a metalled surface. Two radiocarbon dates were recovered from the base of the enclosure ditch. An apple sample attained a date of 1010 +/- 34 AD while an oak sample attained a date of 509 +/- 31 AD. A discrepancy of 500 years has been ascribed to ‘old wood’ effect (Halliday 2008, 23). The E quadrant of the site was preserved in situ within open space. Compiled by: Christine Baker Date of upload: 5 February 2015 - DU012-094004: Enclosure, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CDU012-094004-. This monument was partially excavated (Licence no. 04E1604) in advance of development. A multi-period site, this circular enclosure (c. 18.5m diam.) was located internal to enclosure (DU012-094002-). The ditch varies in width between 3.5m – 4.7m in width and a causeway (2.4m wide) was identified to the S, directly opposite the bridge of the outer enclosure. Two radiocarbon dates indicating an early 12th century AD date were recovered from the basal fill of the ditch. (Halliday 2008, 28). The E quadrant of the site was preserved in situ within open space. This monument was excavated (Licence no. 04E1604) in advance of development. A multi-period site, this sub-rectangular enclosure (10.5m x 0.3m) was located to the SW of outer enclosure (DU012-094003-) although was interpreted as contemporary with inner enclosure (DU012-0003). There was a concentration of pits and postholes in the internal NW corner. A copper alloy fastener or brooch was recovered from the fill of the enclosure ditch. A radiocarbon date of 1109-1173 AD was obtained from the ditch fill. The presence of numerous cattle heads indicated butchery and potential craft-working may have been undertaken here (Halliday 2008, 32).
