Named 'Site of chapel' on the 1837 ed. OS 6-inch map. Located in field of rough pasture described locally as 'chapel meadow' (Healy 1975, 17). Within field of rough pasture sloping down to stream on south side of which is a tower house (DU005-004----). In the fields immediately to the east an organised medieval settlement including metalled trackway, at least two dry-stone buildings, a number of metalled surfaces, possible wall remains, and cereal drying kilns has been excavated (Long 2010, Kyle 2011). Radiocarbon and ceramic analysis indicate a 13th/14th date. Interpreted by the excavators as a medieval village or hamlet c.420m (NW/SE) and a possible width of c.180m with at least 5/6 medieval structures. Possible Folkstown chapel may have served religious needs of population whom are most likely to have been tenants of de Rosel family (Kyle 2011, 12). Not visible at ground level. Excavated in advance of proposed development (Licence no. 10E0010) the trough (3.25m x 1.64m, 0.45m deep) was oval in plan. The charcoal rich fills contained heat-shattered stone. Charred hazelnut shell was interpreted as a deliberate deposit (Long 2010, 42). Excavated in advance of proposed development (Licence no. 10E0010) a metalled trackway (c.13.5m in width) was orientated NNE-SSW and extended beyond the limit of excavation. The trackway was cut by a pit from which 13th pottery was recovered. The remains of wheel ruts were visible in places. The trackway was partially overlain by silt in an area of depression suggesting flooding. Three horse-shoes identified as Clark Type 1 (late 9th – 13th century) were recovered from the silt deposit (Long 2010, 50). Compiled by: Christine Baker Date of upload: 2 February 2015 - DU005-126: House - medieval, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CDU005-126----. The remains of a stone building were excavated in advance of proposed development (Licence no. 10E0010). A short section of dry-stone wall survived, the footprint mainly defined by a metalled surface (c .6m long). The structure was rectilinear in plan and would have fronted onto the trackway (DU005-071----). A large amount of mid-12th – mid-14th century pottery, a silver penny of Edward I or II (c. 1279-1327 AD), a whetstone, iron objects and a weight were recovered a spread overlying the metalled interior. Associated was a drain on the same orientation and a hearth. A radiocarbon date from charred cereal grain returned a calibrated date of 1280-1410 AD (Long 2010, 34). Compiled by: Christine Baker Date of upload: 2 February 2015 - DU005-127: Kiln - corn-drying, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CDU005-127----. The remains of an irregular-shaped kiln were excavated in advance of a proposed development (Licence no. 10E0010). The kiln was earth cut and sub-rectangular in plan. Abundant wheat, occasional oat and weeds were identified from the charred plant assemblage. The kiln was radiocarbon dated to 1270-1400 cal. AD (Long 2010, 52). Compiled by: Christine Baker Date of upload: 2 February 2015 - DU005-128: Structure, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CDU005-128----. This structure (4m x 2.5m) excavated in advance of a proposed development (Licence no. 08E054EXT) was defined by the remains of two dry-stone walls sealed by a large deposit containing a substantial amount of medieval pottery. A small gully was located within the interior. The structure was interpreted as an outbuilding. It was associated with a cluster of stakeholes. Radiocarbon analysis of a naked wheat grain from this feature returned a calibrated date of 1256-1376 AD (Kyle 2011, 49).
