- DU007-015001: Religious house - Augustinian, of Arrouaise nuns, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CDU007-015001-. Located in low-lying field of tillage. This site is associated with the Priory of St. Mary which was endowed for nuns by John Comyn, archbishop of Dublin, c. 1190 (Gwynn & Hadcock 1988, 311, 371). The convent of Arroasian nuns moved from Lusk to Gracedieu after 1195 AD. All that survives of the nunnery is the SE corner containing a segmental arched doorway and vaulted passage. It is built of roughly coursed masonry. There is a recess in S wall of entrance. The south wall extends intermittently (L c. 18-20m). Significant vegetation growth. St Bridget's well lies W of site (DU007-015003-) and Lady well in field to S (DU007-015004-). Excavations to the W of the nunnery exposed remains of three structures; a medieval building which had been demolished in the 17th century defined by two substantial, earth-bonded walls (int dims. L 17m, Wth 13m; Wth 1m) rising to two courses and built directly on a cobbled surface. Also exposed were the foundations of side walls of a possible post-medieval house/farm (L 7.3m, Wth 4m, T 0.7m) a cobbled surface, likely to represent a laneway (Wth 6m) bounded by a lintel drain and a ditch which fed a millrace to the S of the site (Gowen 1989, 16-17). There are two inscribed 16th-century graveslabs to the N (c.20m) and W (c.6m) of the remains of the nunnery (DU 007-015001-) contains a worn inscription around the margin (dims. L 1.6m, Wth 0.85m, T 0.45m). The western graveslab bears an incised cross with a stepped base and floriated arms. Site of St Bridget's Well, located in a partially reclaimed paddock 50m N of a corn mill (DU007-015006-) and 150m E of Gracedieu Augustinian Nunnery (DU007-015001-). Lady Well (DU007-015004-) located 220m to SSW. A stream rises E of the well site. No surface remains visible. Site of St Bridget's Well described in 1958 as; 'No tradition about this well survives in the locality' (Ó Danachair 958, 73). Site of dried up well described in 1975 as 'nothing to be seen at all. In small wettish field beside a derelict farmstead and cornmill. Modern drainage ditches have probably lowered the water table, so that former wells have gone dry and disappeared' (Henry A. Wheeler 15/05/1975, SMR File). No longer venerated (Healy 1975, 19). Well backfilled for safety reasons (Skyvova 2005, 52). St. Bridget's Well (DU007-015003-) 220m to NNE. No surface remains visible. Site of Lady Well described in 1958 as; 'It is now a little dry hollow in a clump of briars but is still known by name in the district. No other tradition survives' (Ó Danachair 1958, 73). Site of well described in 1975 as 'has disappeared. Site of it was in middle of ploughed fields' (Henry A. Wheeler 15/05/1975, SMR File).No longer venerated (Healy 1975, 19). This is located to the south of a tillage field known as the 'Motte field' west and north of a lane that leads to a nunnery (DU007-015001-). Known as the nun's road it is now filled with agricultural detritus. In the 1992 report the 'motte' was a small, round-topped mound (diam. 11m; H 1.6m) within pasture, partially truncated by a field boundary, which extends east-west. The Civil survey (1654-6) mentions a mill at Gracedieu (Simington 1945, 56). The present remains of a 19th-century mill in a yard E of the nunnery (DU007-015001-) probably occupies the site. There is a re-used dressed limestone corbel supporting a weighing scales, in the present building. This may have been part of the earlier mill (VBSCD: 2/124). A millrace runs eastwards past the nunnery to the south. In 1988 the associated millrace was investigated. It was found to have been faced with a strong mortar-bonded wall but there were the remains of a substantial wall to the north of the millrace which may have served some related structural purpose. Traces of further wall trenches were located. As most of the finds recovered from this area are medieval, the structures represented, albeit enigmatically, are likely to be medieval and thus related to the occupation of the nunnery (Gowen 1988, 16-17). Bridge located at south-west corner of field immediately south of Motte field and south-west of nunnery (DU007-015001-). The single arch has a span of c.5m and consists of random rubble and well-squared limestone blocks. The underside of the arch has is wattle-marked mortar. Traditionally part of the 'nun's road' from the nunnery to Swords. Similar in make-up to the bridge further east which was dated on stylistic grounds to the 14th century (Simington & O'Keefe 1991, 171-172). Completely overgrown and fenced off. In the 1992 report a single arch bridge crossed a stream that runs south of the nunnery (DU007-015001-) at Gracedieu. It had a semi-circular arch built of limestone blocks. Similar in make-up to the bridge further west which was dated on stylistic grounds to the 14th century (Simington & O'Keefe 1991, 171-172). Approximately 12m east of modern crossing are several courses of stone on north bank but nothing visible on opposing bank. Possibly only remains of bridge. Excavations in 1988 to the S of the Ballyboughal Road on a N facing slope close to Gracedieu Nunnery (DU007-015001-) revealed the poorly preserved remains of 65 individuals, 7 of which were placed in stone-lined and covered graves (Gowen 1989, 15-16). This cemetery lay in the ESE quadrant of an oval double-ditched enclosure (inner ditch dims. Wth 2.2m, D 1.4m; outer ditch dims Wth 5m, 2.15m).
